    "it's not fair to compare Band-Maid songs to other Band-Maid songs because that's a really high standard"...Exactly!!👍👍😁
    Beauty and the Beast is my most fav Miku led song. One of reasons why I like this song so much is the way Miku sings this line "はっ倒す" (hattaosu) which means "I'll knock you down". 😉

    Some of the early albums are now cheaper and more easily available. So I love listening to the CDs. I have an old cd player that I have had for years that has had a new lease of life again listening to these albums. Amazing how different the band are now. Almost some sound punkish and yet they still have that Band Maid feel. Great going through the music in order. Deserves many more listens.

      Thanks for watching/listening. :-) I too have an old CD player (an Aiwa that I bought in 1998 but it still works!)

    I advise everyone to go out and buy all the physical releases you can get, WAV files on the real stuff aare the only way to go. This was an excellent album too. Best rock band on the planet in my personal opinion.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I do like the physical products -- maybe because I'm old fashioned, but also because my internet is occasionally unreliable (Texas = third-world country when it comes to infrastructure) and also because I assume it supports the band more than Spotify does. :-)

      Streaming only gives the artists pennies on the dollar. They physical sales aren't the greatest either, but the return is way, way better. I just picked Miku's HATOFULL up from my front porch about 20 minutes ago, shipping was almost the same as the physical product. Pony Canyon.@@Chan_Fry

    Beauty and the Beast is a rare Miku song with Saiki on back vocals(you can see it in their old EU Tour in Italy I think it was). Definitely underrated song

    • @w.b.562

      pretty sure it's also the ONLY one with Saiki actually staying on stage doing backup vocals.
      they played it Mexico also.
      And they pretty sure - I was there - played it in Germany too. They just don't play their older songs often nowadays... But I hope they bring Beauty and the Beast back on again sometimes in the future. It's my favorite of the Miku songs :)

      @Chan_Fry  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'll look for the Italy/Germany footage. Thanks! I can't think of any live song I've seen with Miku on lead and Saiki on backup (for the entire song), so I've missed out. :-)

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @w.b.562 : I can understand that older tunes get phased out in favor of new songs. But I do like that the band occasionally pulls out older tracks. I agree that this is an old one I'd like to see revived. :-)

    • @w.b.562
      @w.b.562 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Chan_Fry and yeah, I completely understand. The thing is - there are not that many Miku lead tracks XD
      for example "Time" (from Just Bring It album) wasn't performed for quite a while outside Japan - they always opted for "Rock in Me" instead. However "Time" did get it's overseas live debut eventually and we did get some shows where Miku performed Time AND Rock in Me back to back. I think they brought Time as "Conqueror" didn't have a Miku song on it... Once "Unseen World" was out - it was "Sayonakidori" on the set-list, occasionally paired with "Rock in Me".
      So the chances "Beauty and the Beast" will be back are not that good... but the fanbase would go apesh't, I'm sure :P It was a fun live song back then, but their fanbase expanded and the song was on the radar for many new fans who were diving through their catalog, so it's still gets mentioned...

    W O W ! You picked up that MISA is a 37th level mage in addition to her Godlike status of Barefoot Assassin. (cannot rank her ~ scale breaks when mortals try).

    Really like your commentaries. You're well-versed in Band Maid lore so you have a good background to draw on. Your commentary on the music is very enjoyable because you honestly say how you feel about it and what interests and impresses you (or what doesn't). As a fellow non-musician who likes music, I can relate to most of what you say. I also like how you give a short intro to the lyrics before each song. Great job all around.

      I can only imagine how the power trio (Akane, Kanami, and MISA) must look while playing those parts live. I'm reminded of the "I don't always..." quote from that beer commercial... I don't always listen to thrash metal, but when I do, it's played by Band-Maid in a really surprising part of a non-metal song. :-)

    Appreciate your channel, Chan, especially the fact that you stick by what you like. Early Band-Maid is not my favorite Band-Maid, but I'll say this: I hear more with every listen, and it's interesting to hear them and their writers slowly converge on a sound, especially by the time Brand New Maid rolls out. And then with JBI, the musical baton is formally passed.

    Up until about 2018-19, when they use to play all their songs exactly as recorded in the studio, I use to sync up poor quality fan videos with the album recordings and, with a little mix from the live video for ambience, playback the fan vid with perfect sound. I did that for years and still occasionally do. In the last few years they seem to go off sync on a few songs, but it still works on others. Their older songs are 🔥🔥🔥 Thx, Chan!

    @greylocke100 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    It's your channel and your decision for the content you post, No problems here Sir.
    Kanami doing some trem picking there. And it is more of a punk beat by Akane. I wish Miku and Saiki would trade vocals more often, like they did in their earlier songs.
    And even though they didn't write the early songs, they did choose which ones they would use and were also involved in the arrangement of them, including some lyrical suggestions. Which is how Miku's very first song she wrote lyrics for (Freedom) she didn't get a song writing credit, until much later. She also helped write the lyrics for Thrill.
    Back to trem picking by Kanami. Along with the off beat high hats ala disco beat from Akane. As far as I know they have never used auto-tune, although Miku has a VERY large vocal range, almost 3 full octaves, while Saiki at the time this was record had a little bit over 2 octaves.
    One of the few times they used an electronic drum beat. I think the vocal filter is called a high pass filter. Band-Maid has used that vocal effect on several other songs as well. Then Akane switched to her acoustic drum kit, although the electric kit can still be heard. That is the wah pedal you heard on Kanami's guitar. And what sounds like a phaser with some reverb thrown in. Heavy use of the wah during the solo. Then a flanger at the end. Hendrix? I'm trying to think of a particular song of his, but I'm coming up blank. Back into the wah, for the end. They were still trying to find "Their" sound, and the label was still rejecting their compositions.
    There is a live version from I think Italy or Spain, at a Con that is pretty good. (It's the one with an outside stage) Another TH-camr reworked the audio and made it sound much better over the original cell phone recording. This was back when MISA was still using a 4 string bass, it wasn't until the Daydreaming mega single and Brand New Maid that she switched over to a 5 string. And yes, during the recording, Kanami still to this days, plays both lead and rhythm guitar parts. She then teaches Miku her parts, as Miku still can't read sheet music. And their early shows they did play a few covers, and only played about 60-80 minutes. Once their catalog got deep enough they played only their own music and their shows went to 2+ hours including Omajinai time.
    Beauty and the Best is a Miku Lead song. There is usually one song per album which is specifically written for Miku to sing. I think both Miku and Saiki can probably pull off some rap or hip hop easily. Yes Saiki is doing the backing vocals for this song. The phaser effect before the second verse hits just right. And I do think Miku went faster. Waiting for the really "Dark" part to hit. It goes to half time and then it REALLY hits. And they do play it on occasion. And now into double time. Back to regular time for the finish. Accompanied by Kanami using her phaser pedal. And they do have a few with no solo, but they're rare. Miku while she has a larger vocal range, she doesn't have the same vocal power that Saiki does.
    And Don't Let Me Down IS in English. One of the TWO they have in English. The other is "The Dragon Cries" And as for length, many of us Maidiacs have no objection to hour long videos breaking down an album. It gives us something to listen to and to interact with each other.

    • @w.b.562
      @w.b.562 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Miku wrote "Freedom" lyrics and also got credited right away. Same for "Yuragu" and "Alone" (both credit shared with Saiki).
      You mean "Thrill". It was suspected she actually helped with the lyrics for "Thrill" but wasn't credited for it. It's the verse with the "pidgeon fly" and some techniques used in the lyrics part were much more in-line of what Miku does in her own lyrics (the way words are shortened to stay in beat) than Akutsu Kentaro in his other songs he's written.
      She got that co-credit on the 10-anniversary album-release
      Then Miku switched over to Zemaitis and started getting serious with the rhythm guitar parts, they had a solid space filled in the middle, so MISA switched to 5-string (couple months after Miku) to be going more into the deeper end, and Kanami - 7 months or so after MISA - switched to PRS for the brighter lead g parts - she switched right after the Addictone endorsement contract ended.
      They just naturally changed to expand their sound as Miku was feeling ready to actually contribute to their sound.

      I truly appreciate these info-dumps. :-) Not sure what else to say, but I've still got Beauty And The Beast floating in my head *days* after recording this video. The chorus doesn't do a TON for me, but the verses are freaking FANTASTIC. (As is the heavy breakdown near the end.) :-)

    Thanks for what you do. I am developing more respect for just how good their early songs are. Arcadia Girl and Beauty & Beast are fan favorites, but don't seem to be played live much. Real Existence seems to be the only song from this album that has become a staple of their live sets. Don't Let Me Down gets occasional play time.

    • @Davey-Boyd
      @Davey-Boyd 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      And "Shake That!" gets played occasionally too! But not often enough! In all the shows they played last year they only played two songs from this album 'Thrill" once (Yokohama) and "Shake That" once (Osaka). They never played "Real Existence" at all last year which really surprised me to be honest.

    • @Chan_Fry
      @Chan_Fry  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it makes sense that Thrill, Real Existence, and (maybe) Don't Let Me Down get playtime -- they are the oldest music videos and the ones with the most views (Thrill at 20 million and R.E. over 10 million I think) -- so they can extrapolate that fans will be familiar. But as a relatively new fan (just over a year now) who hasn't seen them live yet, I think I would be blown away by seeing Beauty And The Beast live. :-)

      @@Chan_Fry "Beauty And The Beast" is quite rare live. They last played it three times in 2018 and the shorter (karaoke!) version once in 2019. I would love to hear it too!

      @@Chan_Fry Currently, Saiki is in charge of coming up with setlist for concerts. The main considerations are the ebb and flow of the concert, crowd reaction to a song, and songs that the band themselves enjoy playing or have an extra attachment to. They will switch out songs that don't seem to get a good response. Choose Me is a personal favorite of Saiki. Alone is their first band written song. From Now On was specifically written as a show opener for the COVID delayed start of touring in 2022. It does make sense that the popular older songs have been played the most in concerts. I think Real Existence is or was the most played.

    I don't think Miku was trying to go deeper and more serious on "Beauty and the Beast" - quite the opposite. The vocals are bright and bubbly by design while the music underneath is not. It's a punk and ska song with a trash breakdown... because, why not? XD
    The lyrics are very simple, but it's soo damn catchy - "it's beeeeeeauty and da beeast" .... "it's booooring in da cityyyy" - I just love it
    And yeah, Miku had rap-like-parts before Saiki started doing it occasionally on later songs

      Maybe you're right about the Miku parts. In my head I was comparing the tone of her voice to her speaking voice, which isn't a good comparison. I'll have to compare to her other songs. (But it still sounds deep/low for her, especially at the beginning of the second verse -- I know she has a tremendous range, which is just so fun to listen to.)

    • @w.b.562
      @w.b.562 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Chan_Fry it really depends of what voice of hers you want to compare to hahahaha
      her natural speaking voice is quite low, isn't bubbly at all, no po's. she is the only one of them doing that cutesy voice in public appearances - which is also relatively common for japanese girls - a lot of them do so in public to appear more cute. just a weird (for us) cultural thing, I guess.
      but as a singing voice it was in line with her other lead songs of the time... it was pretty much straight forward, no fancy acrobatics she can (and does) pull off these days

    • @Chan_Fry

      It does seem to make a lot of difference which listening device you use. I have listened to Band-Maid on at least six levels of speakers (in order: HyperX headphones seen here, PC speakers, JLab earbuds, TV speakers, phone speaker, and tablet speaker.) In the latter three, Band-Maid sounds best in poppier, vocal-melody driven songs, or acoustic versions. Their more complex, harder songs require the first three - especially if the bass plays a role.
