    Just got delivery of mine today (06/27/2024) with green G10 scales. First impressions are great. I love the ergonomics. I love the deployment. Almost feels like it's assisted. Just switched the pocket clip to right side tip up.

    I use diamonds and a ceramic stone lastly fixed but yeah hardly any pressure with the diamond stones . I’d say a 600 grit ending stone creates a nice sticky edge but I usually go way further nerding out . Just practice and it works out . Tips and by the Sharpening choil is where my attention goes

      Tips are tricky ain't they? Yeah I figure I probably messed up those fixed angle stones. I tried not to apply any pressure at all...but there's this one knife...and it was bring a booger and I may have gotten frustrated 😆

    I've had the D2 for about 6 months now, it quickly became my favorite knife. As soon as the Red RAT showed up I pounced on it. I've had it for about a month now and it's without a doubt a far superior blade than the D2 (And I was pretty happy with the D2). My only gripe is that it was pretty dull when it came in the mail. It took an edge very well on the worksharp and haven't had to sharpen it since. The d2 I seemed to be sharpening frequently. Very very pleased with it as my primary knife. The price my seem a little steep but I have more expensive knives that I don't like nearly as much as this one. Good vid🤙

      Great points. I was giving the price grief at first , but I quickly started comparing it to other knives we have around and it quickly seemed way more affordable. 😎🤘

      I started with the rat aus-8 automatic I liked the scales and the blade cut things but the mechanism was garbage and the lock didn't work right
      Then aus-8 standard mechanism worked much better like an automatic
      Now happily have 3 in D2
      Other knives look better but it always fits and works good in my hand

    Playing Blade Show catch up now, so just saw this. G-10 is strong stuff and good for machining. That's why we use it at my work. Probably accounts for the extra weight and grip. With the steel liners, it's not going to make as big of difference on this knife. Aus 8 is a great steel to practice sharpening on when you're new at it, but no steel is going to be good if you heat treat it too soft or too brittle.

  • @cheatobandito
    @cheatobandito ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm in for an upgraded steel on the rat 1 but they could have used something a bit more budget friendly AUS10 or 14C28N. Something in that range.

    When closed, does the Rat 2 poke you because the blade doesn't sit far enough in the handle? My D2 version did that, badly!

    • @apex_alchemy_knives
      @apex_alchemy_knives  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Never been poked by a closed rat 1 myself. I've had 3 of them, still have 2. Gotta be honest, I haven't handled may model 2's. I mean I haven't carried them. I've handled them king enough to do a video but I do religiously carry the model 1 and no issues to report.

  • @BFVgnr
    @BFVgnr ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I absolutely love the RAT 1. I've got 3 of them. One of the stone washed OD handle versions that BHQ was selling for $25 last christmas like you have in the video, a black handle, and a black blade, black handle assisted opening (that's not worth the extra, the 'safety' isn't, and it's not any faster than a standard). Those BHQ Rat 1 made awesome secret santa gifts.
    I've also got a Rat 2, and I've been waiting on this S35vn Rat 1 since it got announced. I think I'll have to get some other scales for the Red Rat when I get it. Like some nice wood off etsy, or if I can find any, those Flytanium brass.

    • @BFVgnr

      I took about a decade off from knives and when i came back to see D2 as a cheap steel and 154cm as bargain steel, my jaw hit the floor.
      I've got Gerbers and Bucks in 154cm, and a couple of ZT in S30v. One my first good knives was a Spyderco Delica in AUS8A. I've got a Spyderco Native in CPM440V, which they've since renamed to S60V.

      Ohhh yeah, wood would be great! If you wanna work out a trade for this red rat I'll be good with letting it go after I get a week or two carry out of it. I primarily wanted it for content. I won't abuse it. Totally up to you bro.

      Heat treat seems "fine to me" because I've been carrying knives for 36 years and have owned, used, and sharpened just about every steel out there. Between using and sharpening knives, you can get an idea if the steel performs and sharpens similarly to other versions of S35VN.
