    James Heatfield used tube screamer, that were in one interview with him

      Lots of Thrash/Death Metal guys used tubescreamers in front of because it tightens up the bass. Of course Hetfield could've used the Tubescreamer to increase gain as well.

      Hey Walter, thank you 🙏 In this world of Pedals pedals pedals, it was refreshing to see your setup. 👍👍👍👍👍

      pedals are not made for lack of talent but for guitar plays with brains who know what to do with them....................and the list is long

    Great Video. Love your channel! It’s Hybrid for me with or without pedals. I play in 4 different bands/projects. A backup for a fusion, rock, Americana, jazz funk band. My own trio. My wife’s project; a wedding band and a 60’s thru early 2000’s Decades Cover band. Good part is songs cross over with three of the band projects. So I need pedals for filling sonic space and tones. But for the Trio, only the amp. It really is preference. Walter Trout and Keith Richards approach to this does make sense. “Your volume and tone knobs as Joe Bonamassa says are your first pedals for sounds really.” No one needs pedals but they sure can be fun to use.

      Yes yes yes! Pedals can for sure be fun to use. For my high gain leads, I just use the amp. For sure if I was playing in a cover band with lots of different sounds, I'd have to use pedals. What too many people are missing is that all of us are supposed to be having fun while making music. Whether we use OD/Dist pedals or not, fun.

    Growing up near Muscle Shoals / Nashville in the 80s it was fairly hard to get pedals so everybody plugged straight in for the most part. All the old cats would say some variation of "no amount of pedals will make up for a lack of talent" so we considered it a point of pride to not use them.

      Awesome story, thank you for sharing. Yeah I grew up listening to heavy metal and all we did was just plug straight into high gain amps. Though I use pedals for some neat fx, I don't use OD or Distortion pedals. Just the amp.

      I've heard other guitarist say pedals make up for lack of playing. SRV and Jimi both used pedals to enhance their tones and mood of the songs they wrote. Exceptions to the theory of talent I guess.

    I bought a Mesa Boogie Mark V 35 and the only pedal I use is the Plethora X3 for modulation. I used to be a big pedal addict, lol. The Fender Supersonic is loaded with a Plethora 5, Fulltone Fulldrive, Honey Bee Fuzz and Fender boost. I prefer the clean channel on Fender SS 22 in Fat mode with the dirt pedals. For the most part, the MB Mark V 35 is my go to. The simplicity is a breath of fresh air and it does sound amazingly addictive.

    Playing with a rock cover band ten years ago, played through a Mesa Caliber .50, ditched pedals and had a blast. Now pedals are for room practice and fun. Minimalist set-up bar none pedals for gigs in small venues.

    Depending on what I'm playing I'll use more or less pedals. Lately I'm just using my Mark V and a delay pedal. For the most part this is doing everything I need. But, I do have, and love using, lots of different pedals, depending on application.

      I rely mostly on my Mark as well. But I do have pedals which I will use on rare occasions.

    Van Halen is most known for using the Amp as his signature tone then ofc his phaser and Flanger effects, with delays and reverbs, but he then later used Overdrives, it’s all preference!

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I love the way VH did his rig. I'm with you, its about one's preference. If I were in a cover band doing tons of different genres, I'd need pedals.

    As somone trying to get more into ambient guitar styles this is probably not the route I need to take

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure, ambient styles rely more heavily on effects rather than just pure raw guitar tone.

  • @operationjason

    If you can get a unique sound that sounds good to you without a pedal, then I 100% agree you do not need one with a Mesa, which, unfortunately I do not have at the moment you can achieve that

    • @SaintLuminus
      @SaintLuminus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching. Yeah I think that was Walter's point. Have a kickass amp and you don't need a pedal. I've used Overdrive/Distorion pedals in the past, but I think I'm going to give it a go without those pedals. I'll still have other pedals I'll used like the Whammy Ricochet, Plethora X3, and Freqout pedal.

    Saw Mr.Trout early this year he was boring as shit. He was shredding the blues for most of the gig and his amp sound was really monotonous. if anyone needed some pedal relief it was him.
    His Mesa Boogie amp sounded thin and harsh a Marshall amp would have been much better.
