- In this whiteboard animation, I explain what our ecological footprint is. Comparing our footprint (natural resources we need and waste we create) and our biocapacity (what the Earth can provide), we can better understand how we fit our planet or not and how to transition to a sustainable development.
▶ In 2020, the world is actually using 1.7 planets ◀

A related concept is Earth Overshoot Day: the day when we have used all the resources the earth can produce in that year. There is another explainer video for this here: • Earth Overshoot Day 20...

I would love a remake of this that's more updated!
@@nathansavelli Me too! Great comment! The problem is that the TH-cam algorithm would still probably show you this one unfortunately... it is a strange thing. I will add that to my todolist for the next few months. For more recent videos on the subject, you can also watch the ones I did on Earth Overshoot Day. I did some in 2016, 2017 and 2018: th-cam.com/video/jgbY79Opn34/w-d-xo.html
@@MagninAlex thanks!! :)
NOPE
I needed to understand the concept for my test and this explains it all! A very clear explanation, thanks.
Glad it helped! Thanks for the feedback :-)

So awesome you´re in to sustainability, I´m too studying the same. :D :D :D This was very helpful and also good information. :) :) :)
This helped me to complete my summer task
You are the best. Now I can complete my summer tasks easily
was studying for a pilot aptitude test when a question involving global hectars per person showed up. didnt know what it is and watched this video. very interesting knowledge.
Way ahead of time!!
This page deserves more attention
Im an environmental scientist and I use these videos to refresh my memory! Thank you so much!

Glad it was helpful!
LOL I had a job as database manager at a medicine company, as a programmer, it was yes, lot´s of money. I couln´t stand for it! It´s time we start to change ourselves. Where are you at your life? I´m allways studying, all the time, I´ve got a lot´s of nice titles. From university in Malmö, and, so on: So I guess at my state of awareness, I´m good at studying. So now I´m so into ecological engineer program 4 sustainability, in an university in Sweden. Everybody can do something out of their state of mind, or change the negative chains, and psykological prisons. You rock! ! ! ! ! ! !
Thank for your comment! Learning is one thing one can always do to become a better person and a better citizen.

Thank you 👍
Very insightful! I am going to make an undergraduate thesis about this Ecological Footprint and its correlation with Human Development Index especially in Indonesia, wish me luck!

Glad to hear that! Thanks for taking the time to write a comment.
Excellent video, Alex! I’m thinking of making a new video on the how to calculate ecological footprints of countries and cities and the math behind it. Appreciate your explanation!
Thanks! Great video idea! I'll be happy to watch it!
Why you explained this like it's nothing? Im having a hard time making my presentation. but thanks to you I understand properly how i'm going to deliver this presentation on my classmates.
Glad I could help!
Because it is political nonsense.

fantastic video, excelente explanation, i will share in my facebook page.
that's good to hear, thanks a lot!
So 1.5 earths means 1year and 5 months or 1 year and a half?Apart from the Earths..the explanations were awesome.
Numbers have changed since I posted the video. Today we are using 1.7 planets which means that on July 29, 2021, we had used all our resources for the year. After that, we are using natural capital.
Genial!!
Great video series. I shall use it in my classroom. Can you please connect me with secondary school activities on this topic?
Very good!! Congratulations.

Very good video.. congratulations. In the illustations, you could include China & India - world's most populous countries also.
Dilip Deshpande Thank you!
What gets eaten up in the ecosystem, for compensation, in cases of ecological debtation. I mean what are the adverse effect.
Every time you use natural resources faster than they regenerate/reproduce (overfishing, deforestation, etc.)
very interesting.wow!
ALSO AWESOME DRAWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
azjo rob Thanks :-)
That is for sure.
Nice video 28 /09 /2018 I have exam It help me Alot thanks
Thank you! it explains better using illustration! :D
It really helped.
Excellent information! I wonder if we would distribute our resources evenly between all people, which life-style could we afford given the sustainable use of Earth's resources?
Thanks! I wonder about that too :-) My guess is that we could have a wonderful lifestyle given how smart and creative human beings are. If we used our talents to live better as opposed to consuming more, the potential is huge! Research shows that about 50% of the food produced today is wasted between producer and consumer. So technically we can feed twice as many people without producing more food. There are many more example...
Great video. Wow the USA has a huge footprint. I try not to contribute too much.
Is it possible to get the chart you made during the video? it would help alot!
Hi, you will find all the most recent charts in the 2014 Living Planet Reports: wwf.panda.org/about_our_earth/all_publications/living_planet_report/ If you are referring to the chart about low/middle/high income countries, it will be on page 59.
Man this type of stuff makes me experience existential dread
cool

I need 3.5 earths like if you`re around this too!
We fit as well as every other animal.
pues a quedado un buen dia because i like this video and i dont undestand nothin #jokinazurmendipueshaquedaounbuendia
I need around 1.4 earths
I like your beard lining
"Global consumption is unevenly distributed" is not the problem. If consumption was evenly distributed at the US level would the problem be solved? I didn't think so.
You left out population. Fewer people means a bigger footprint for everyone.
+DingoHammer Unevenly distributed consumption is not the only problem but it is one of them. And yes, if everybody consumes like the US, it would be way worse. The video suggests the opposite: if everybody had the same footprint as the RD of Congo, the world as a whole would not be in as much trouble.
