I'll post it again. I work as an AASP in a retail store. We JUST got authorized to replace displays, and even GENUINE APPLE DISPLAYS will cause Face ID to disable until we run a "calibration".
I was about to post what I can't fix, but it's shorter to post what we can. We JUST started displays, and we can do batteries, and SOME main cameras.... That's it. Everything else goes to an Apple for repair.
OH and the touch ID? It's sent to us as a full display assembly. And guess what, that "calibration" pairs the touch ID to the motherboard.
Louis is correct. We CAN'T order any parts at all. We use a display, send it to Apple, and then Apple sends one back.
Edit: The software is cloud based,so without the Apple repair ticket, it's useless.
Edit 2: For clarification. The software is on its own MacBook, the local disk only has the OS, stock apps, and nothing else. The calibration app is just a front end, EVERYTHING happens on the Apple side. It's also a fail secure system, no internet it fails, Internet goes down it fails, internet too slow it fails,it looses hardwired connection it fails and it disables the app if it's on wifi. So yeah, Apple locked it down pretty hard.

Every company needs to do this. I have own several PC's and hardware over the years and every time something went wrong they always suggested a factory reset. The guy who I was talking with was pretty tech savvy, it's just that he is forced to go over a list of obvious steps even though they are so obvious or totally irrelevant to the question. I remember having had a sony mx 3000 which had audio issues. The audio would randomly cut out and there was audible static noise. You might think it was a bluetooth issue but even if I used the headphone with a wire the audio still would cut out. So the person suggested me to factory reset my pc so my pc would have default drivers, rather than drivers I would have had with previous audio systems. It doesn't make sense to suggest it nor resetting a pc for some silly headphones, yet their policy probably stated to factory reset devices.

Do you really think the typical apple customer really cares about repairing their own devices? If so you’re wrong. One of the problems here is the fact that apple is pretty much trying to create a monopoly on repairing their devices. It shouldn’t be that way and people should be able to get a different opinion instead of being forced to overpay for a repair that doesn’t cost that much especially from people that don’t even know what they’re doing.

      (edit at bottom)
I thought apple used a smaller diameter. Or is that just on iPhones? I was new to all of this crap after buying a 3s (I think), my very first & very very very last Apple product, & had some awesome custom molded earbuds made. Only to discover, after my day long flight to Australia had lifted off, that they were absolutely worthless for any in flight entertainment that didn't include my iPhone unless I actively held the plug into the headphone jack.
Pissed off _doesn't even come close to describing my emotions. I was _*_f!?&∆%g livid._*
Who TF bucks a standard that has been around nearly *_4 freaking decades!?!?!?_*
*_I_* turned out to be the in flight entertainment for quite a few people sitting around me for the first couple of hours of that flight. LOL
      *_I freaking hate you Apple_*
      --------------------
Edit: was a 3gs & Apple's specs say 3.5mm jack which is the widely accepted diameter. So I'm misremembering the exact issue. But there was _definitely_ something going on. Couldn't get the buds to work in anything other than the 3gs & this was also true for the original Apple buds that came with the phone.
      Edit part 2:
*_I still hate Apple._* I was part of the class action suit for the moisture indicator dots that tripped in humid weather. ~$350 payout which was far too little & far too late. I was 2 months into a contract when the 3gs shit the bed & Apple claimed water damage when I knew for a fact that it was impossible. Couldn't afford the refurb Apple pushed & still had ~16-18 months before I could upgrade so I had to go back to the flip phone the 3gs replaced. Also, even if it was affordable, who would want to pay to swap a 2 month old phone with a freaking refurb carrying an even shittier warranty that would have no doubt indicated water damage just like the original?!?!

I work at an AASP...the training we received from Apple is absolute garbage. They don't tell us which pieces are soldered on or which connect with cable. There are only 3 parts that are given to us to replace. If anything else is busted not relating to those 3 things, it's a "whole unit replacement"...We mostly take care of those who are still within the MFW or have applecare because if it doesn't require any replacement of the 3 main items, they get a new phone anyway. The ones that are out of warranty and have easily fixable things that we can't do I tell them to go to elsewhere and not give these greedy bastards any more of their money. Out store was great and WAY less stressful before we became an AASP. Wish they would take it back

    • @marc-andrerenaud1394
      @marc-andrerenaud1394 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The store I work with is in the same boat. Prior to becoming an AASP we could perform many other repairs because we actually used reliable after market parts. There are so many repairs we have to turn away now due to Apple's limitations on what parts are actually available. Even in the last year alone it's been infuriating to see how much more obtuse and draconian the security rules have become when it comes to starting and completing repairs. Not only do we have to complete diagnostics prior to the repair, we also have to run more diags once the repair, some of them take 2+ hours to complete.
In effect, while a screen replacement on a Macbook Pro 2015 takes about 30-45 minutes from a hardware perspective, the actual time to completion is 4.5 hours with all the extra steps, most of which are cloud-based diagnostics that scan the machine for "illegal" parts. On computers that contain a T2 chip, diag times take even longer due to Apple cloud server being abysmally slow.
The one and only benefit we've seen so far is dealing with repairs covered by Applecare or Recall Extension Program (REPs). REPs in particular because they really help with getting good will points for the shop, as the customer is basically getting a free repair, even when not covered by AppleCare anymore.
With all our bad experience with Apple we've been making that when clients still insist on buying Apple laptops that they purchase AppleCare and sell right before it expires. We'd rather then buy Dell or Lenovo, basically anything other than Apple but Apple lovers really love their Apple machines, even when you show them physical evidence of how poorly designed and fragile their expensive machines truly are.

I liken this to Automotive manufacturers. This is a very long story about Toyota in Australia.
Here in Australia I took my old 1998 Landcruiser to Toyota for a service. Usually I'd do it myself but I just bought it and was busy.
They quoted $1000. I asked them to do the automatic transmission too and do the filter and adjust the kickdown, $350 more. And to flush the coolant, check the valve clearances etc, all up $1500.
Showed up the next evening, not ready, the next evening, not ready, the day after I called, they said they needed it for another day. The next day they wanted it longer...nope I said I need my fucking car!
Got it back, still wouldn't kick down. The service advisor said they flushed the transmission. So they connect hoses to the cooler and circulate new oil with the old stuff. Valve clearances are not checked they use their human senses to determine it. The coolant wasn't flushed, they drain the radiator then refilled it leaving the old stuff throughout the system.
For the next week I could just smell burning. Eventually Saturday came and I noticed oil pressure dropping. Stopped to check oil, bone dry. Bought oil, refilled it, no leaks but oil pressure was now lower. Told Toyota, they checked records, turns out they put oil way too thin in and it burnt it away. They apologised, sent me a $20 fuel voucher and offered to quote me for damages free of charge but I'd have to pay for the engine damage 🤨
I then went over the car myself, found the kickdown cable looser than a Ukrainian girls morals and spent ten seconds adjusting it. Perfect.
Redid coolant since they mixed red and green types.
Went on a huge road trip across the country. After 15,000kms I serviced it myself but dropped into Toyota to ask them to pump some grease into the front knuckles (birfield joints). After allot of confusion and the foreman coming out he said it's a sealed unit that can't be done. FFS I went to the auto parts store, bought grease and a grease gun, undid the 14mm bolt on top and filled it up myself.
Fast forward a year and the Central locking started playing up. Would unlock but won't lock. Couldn't diagnose it so paid Toyota $180 to check. They said they would drop me home after dropping it off. They then said they couldn't once there but, the lady driving the shuttle van came out, offered to drop another passenger off near my house, I asked if I could get a lift, they ignored me and left. I felt so bad. A week later Toyota called, went to get my car, had to pay an extra $100 because it took longer to diagnose. They quoted me $6000. Some relay needed changing, the dashboard had to come out. The windscreen etc.
I did some more digging about myself, found a common culprit, removed the interior ecu controller which was above the stereo, called another Toyota dealer for the part price. The guy was adamant my car didn't have it. I urged him to check since I just pulled it out of mine. $1500 and two months as it has to be made in Japan they had none.
Went to the wreckers, $80 fixed.
It's not like I had a rare unicorn car. These were common mass sold vehicles all over Australia. Engineered to perfection and maintained by baboons.
The basic lack of knowledge was beyond me. I went to a reputable independent garage recently with my car, instead of using the bloody dipstick they use an app to determine the engine oil capacity. Overfilled it by a litre thinking it's a different engine and again I had to redo it myself.
Went to another garage for a service asked them to adjust the handbrake. They said it's not adjustable it needs new shoes and drum's....fuck sake took my screwdriver and did it myself. And they don't rotate tyres as part of a standard service it's $15 per tyre extra.
Not just technology, these idiots flow into every industry.
I'm extremely polite and respectful, I follow all the processes but I constantly get screwed over.
I drove an older 80 Series from NSW to Perth and went to an authorised check station to get it registered here. They told me the wheel bearings need replacing, I had them done a week earlier before making the trip. It's loose...I said impossible especially since it's a live beam floating axle and unless they had the strength to bend an axle by hand how could they tell? I maintain my cars with an obsessive amount of attention.
They then said I needed to apply for a modification of seats because I removed the rear most third row....they are clip in designed to be removable. Off I went, the department of transport manager came out said he has the same car and it's not necessary. I just begged him to convert it to a 5 seater from 7. Went back with the paperwork only for the check authority to realise they were clip in and said I'd have to change it back to 7 seater.....I nearly committed suicide then and there.
Took my two year old mint condition low km sedan to get a charter vehicle safety check. Made the mistake of wearing my work suit so got a call saying the Panhard bushes are worn out $290 to replace or it fails. Told him I had it on the hoist a day ago literally. But he was too committed then and couldn't go back on his word. Paid him to do nothing picked it up, he was bright red when he realised I knew about everything and that he was ripping me off. He couldn't find the worn bushes replaced earlier that day, couldn't show me the new bushes on the car because he had to leave urgently and literally walked off when I told him that my car doesn't have Panhard bushes.

They last Apple product I had was an Ipod from about 3 years ago...It recently kicked the bucket and for about two years ago I told myself "When this is done it will be the LAST PRODUCT I EVER OWN THAT IS APPLE".
And I did exactly that...I bought an ANDROID just a few weeks ago.
My Neice is starting college in a day or two...I know a fair amount about computers so my brother etc asked if I could look into a decent laptop for college.
What does my Neice ask..."Can I get a Mac"?
    I asked her why?
She said well, most of my friends have one.
I then told her why did her friends get one?
She said she didn't know and they just do.
I then did some research and bought her an $700 Laptop with 500GB SSD PCIE , I7 8th gen, 8Gb Ram, Yada Yada.
I then proceeded to show her the Apple Air which had a price tag of 1,300 roughly...
I then showed her a comparison of specs...The Apple had 256 GB Ssd, a slower Cpu etc and a smaller display.
The laptop was just a little heavier compared to the apple but still extremely light and portable.
Then I asked her why it costs so much more?
She wasn't sure...So I told her..."See that little fruit symbol on the back?"...That's why you're paying more.
Along with the fact that it also comes with the wonderful options that make it more difficult to work and play well with any OS or equipment that doesn't have the Fruit on the back...In effect trying to wrangle you into only buying in the fruit universe.
And get used to those Lightning cables!!!!
And I also made sure to tell her..."The first time some kid who knows zero about computers makes a smart remark about her not having an apple to simply reply...Would you like to compare specs?? And then ask if they would like to run multiple tasks of the same and see which performs better??
And when her laptop embarrases the Apple Air etc to then remind them that they stupidly payed almost double for a subpar, slower, laptop...Cause it has a fruit on the back...Congrats on stupidity!@!!
But then I told her to at least be a good sport and give them the tip to double chack before allowing any updates...Cause the next update may just have the unseemly side effect of making their device SLOWER...But only because they are looking out for them and their battery 😏
    ut their more DURABLE BRO!!!
Really?? Then why are they bombarded at repair shops??
    Think again.
Honestly...Some people deserve to own an Apple....If your willing to spend thousands without doing the research...Who is really to blame?
Do your homework kids...And preferably on a laptop that outperforms an Apple...It doesn't take much to do that with a bit of research and knowledge.

Hey Louis, funny enough, I'm actually apple and Samsung certified for a certain corporation. I wint say who just for confidential reasons.
So after working at a smaller shop before this job, I was not certified but my knowledge said otherwise.
Not that I work at this new place, I have now noticed that my employees that have been there for more than 3 years dont even know what the inside looks like.
They believed that an IC audio issue from an iphone 7 series was a software issue...... the day they told me what could be the problem they told me all the software is up to date and no damage exist. And looked at me trying to figure out if a hard restore would fix it.
At this time I was finally putting the pieces together that even my employees were beyond brainwashed and had all the GSX info in their head but no knowledge of the device at all.
It's kind of sad that I cant do any board or small parts repair anymore due to no competition....... buuuut if I dont use their resources, I continue my side gig. But we dont talk about that.
Love your work Louis. Keep it up!

Hey Luis, ordered a Microscope based on your recommendations, thanks. The issue with being Apple Certified Center is you are bound by Apple's rules based on what you can repair. You can't do your own DIY jumpers, mods when you are Certified. This means you will have to lie to customers and tell them it's a lost cause when a simple jumper wire fixes the issue. A+ certified many years ago, took 10 minutes reading a book to pass both Hardware and Software test, this is back in 2001.

Not one person thinks to recommend welding a small piece of metal like a coat hanger to the plug and yanking it out. To be clear saying weld as in JB weld, superglue or whatever strong adhesive you can manager a tiny dab of. Guess it's the whole, "when your tool is a hammer..." type of mindset causing people to avoid a cost effective solution.

I work for a major retailer's call center, and we have Apple-Authorized repair centers in our stores. The amount of times I've had to tell customers "we can't do that" on machines that are six years old is obscene. The amount of times I've had to say "that'll probably require a logic board swap" is dishearteninng. And the worst thing is telling customers "per Apple's policy, we have to keep your machine in the shop until the service is completed. This includes the time it takes us to order parts."
It's even worse for iPhone repairs for the stores that CAN work on them. We are limited to the battery and the Home Button. All other repairs go back to Apple directly. And not even the Genuis Bar knows what AASPs can do. They send people to us for repairs that we can't do all the time. And now they look like idiots as I tell customers "well actually, we can't get parts for your 2011 MacBook Pro, so we'd be unable to service it unfortunately". It's absolutely rediculous.

if you look at just bussiness, then having all the repair components behind all these paywalls and crap, is dumb.
if you sell good first party components to independent shops, who then can repair it with good components, then you don't have the entire issue, AND you get money from the components the store buys from you.
and if you still wanna have first party stores thats fine, cause then you can say we train our people beyond what a normal shop would/can do.
and that, if that would actually be true(which it almost has to, because if people have more issues going to you then to someone else, why would they go there), would be a good reason to use the apple shops, for those who wanna have that extra security.
not this whole no we can't BS

  • @DJRonnieG
    @DJRonnieG 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Being an AASP is an abusive relationship, when changing a battery under warranty it was critical we followed their CYA routine. You must send the old battery back for recycling within two days or they will not give you return credit for it. If the box which the battery is in has any extra marks or labels (aside from the s/n label), then they just don't give you credit for it.
So much of it was about finding excuses to not compensate the AASP, and giving us motive to avoid servicing shit unless it "was quick and profitable." We were limited to screens and a batteries, and even then it was a no-go with iPads and MacBooks.
Beyond that, I miss my GSX access because there were a lot of PDF's and images but certainly nothing to help with component-level repair. Was basically good for getting official guides for taking apart iPhones.

At least during the first call, the guy admitted that it was entirely possible it is just a cable, and he didn't know for sure simply because we wasn't authorized to make the repair or receive that part. He then even went as far to warn that Apple will possibly clear your data seemingly for no reason or just straight up change the logic board (thus losing your data). He was as honest as he could be as an AASP without shooting his own business in the foot by recommending an unauthorized third-party repair (which I'm sure Apple would have hunted down and shot him for).

I've worked for an AASP. For a while, I was even authorized to do repairs, but that was way back in de late 90s. Back then, we could actually still fix stuff for you. Now, anything that's not a battery, a display or something extremely obvious, goes straight to Apple to fix. You're not even allowed to do anything else with it. AASPs are just there to do a basic filtering for Apple. Most of the stuff they do, you can do at home with a few tools from iFixit, but yeah, it will void your warranty...

I ran into an issue with MacBook Pro (my speakers burned out) within the 1 year warranty and took it to the apple store to get it "repaired" . They did the job for free due to the warranty but 8 months later, I ran into the same issue with the same speaker. Now that i was out of warranty, the apple store quote was for 800 dollars. I'm a bit tech savvy so I spoke to the genius bar technician and asked him why the cost was so high just to fix the speaker and he was honest with me that they don't "repair" but "replace" the entire part described by Apple as the "Top Case with Battery ANSI", where I guess the speaker is embedded into. I looked at him with a "You got to be kidding me" face but the genius bar technician was nice of enough to recommend me an independent shop ( a local competitor for Louis). I've not repaired it since I've had no downtime to get it serviced, but when I do, will most likely take it to Rossmann's shop for the job.

The last guy who told you after being away from the phone that they can't fix the port itself sounded so sad when he had to tell you that.

I work at Best buy. My job is to sell computers and I've been building/repairing PCs since I was 16, I'm 21 now. I tell the positives and negatives of products because I am an honest person when it comes to selling a computer or any device. There was an incident where I was talking to a customer about the positives and negatives of a 15 inch macbook pro. It was the i9 model, and I listed the overall positives and overall negatives of the product. Because there were more negatives than positives, like bad board, keyboard being a faulty design and having problems, and thermal throttling with the i9 chip, one of the apple vendors became so angry, he went to my manager and I was put in a room with 3 managers and was basically yelled at because of my "Bias against Apple." Well jokes on them cause I actually like their ipads, but I digress. I listed both positives and negatives of the product, but because I listed the negatives....they thumped my skull.

Calling about headphone ports reminds me of my last laptop, an Asus Brand 14" laptop from Best Buy. The headphone/Mic jacks sat in a cut-out in the board, and at one point one of the pins fatigued and I didn't have audio on the left channel of my headphones. Warranty repair would have been a month turn around and $150, replacing the IO daughter board myself would have been $55, but in the end I was able to dremel away some of the plastic of the jack, and bridge the pin to the jack with a bit of solder. Lasted the remaining 5 years I kept using that laptop.
