Walking the abandoned part of the Mornington Railway, you can see just how much work the volunteers of this society has in front of them. They are planning to go across Moorooduc hwy to Baxter but they need the volunteers and the money to help once they get the clearance to start.

That train whistle can be heard from my house in Mount Eliza every Sunday the railway runs past the footy ovals. I hope that one day it gets converted into a metro line from Baxter that eventually connects up to Frankston in the future.

Awesome to hear a whistle in the distance !! And there are plans !

Getting more of these railways back connected to the main line is where it's at. People can catch the special trains out to wherever from the station at Frankston or Lilydale, etc. Metro can run the odd train a few times a day like to Stony point. Wouldn't be bad. Edit: Even from Southern Cross. Like a day trip out somewhere.

@@Victorian_steam I don't know why they insist on having miles of track separating them from the main line. It's like they think the government will just swoop in and take it, give someone else the rent or whatever.

Here’s a fact - when Vicroads laid the surface of Frankston Flinders rd and removed most of the crossings equipment, it was done without Victrack’s knowledge.

The main infrastructure on the morningron peninsula was done by for the military in the late 1880s The line to baxter from melbourne was built to service the langwarrin army camp😂. The mornington train line was built to service Balcombe army camp and the line to hastings and Cerberus was for the navy base.
Water for these bases was supplied from the tarago reservior at neerim south to devil bend reservior at mooroduc. These pipelines reservations are still used today to supply water to the Peninsula. Refer to the first victorian mounted rifles (minty calder)

    • @paulphotios3920

@@Victorian_steamthat reference to the firstvictorian mounted rifles is a book written by winty Calder. She was a historian and gives full references in the back of book. One reference is to an article in a newspaper from 1880s. I looked up the reference in the state library and the front page was the headline the Russians are coming with details of the planned railway. I got a copy of the page. Used to often run into bill parkin on the train from the city to Frankston. I gave the photo copy to bill who put it on display on his desk at vline. Ran into bill a few years later and he looked a bit frazzled. What's the matter bill? Well they have me working on the feasibility of electrifying the line to Cranbourne. Um bill you are the mayor of Cranbourne? Yes and it is a bit dificult. Bill passed away a few years ago.

Not exactly true. The Mornington train line opened in 1880 odd. Balcombe Army Camp did not open until WW2, 1940. The train line was there decades before the Army inhabited Balcombe Camp.

I've seen a few vids of people making rail carts and running them on disused lines, that line is the only one I know of near me, however I didn't know it was that overgrown etc.

Hi there i enjoyed watching your railway history videos and i like your model railway set that got active railways and a disused track just like the real life disused train tracks/ as a 7 year old in late 1981 i saw the INNER CIRCLE RAILWAY and early 1984 as a 10 year old kid i saw them removed the tracks at Nicholson Street in North Fitzroy

They must have some sort of plan in mind for opening up another section as there is a shit load of concrete sleepers stacked at thier Moorooduc site.
