Prefer the hard top myself but YES,, early GTO's were the elite muscle car. I like the '65 the best of them all because I'm not a fan of curvy bodys but the '66 IS cool!
Front disc brakes became an option beginning in 1967, also was the first year for dual chamber master cylinder. This 66 has been upgraded, smart for safety reasons.
When I get my gto, yep, disc brakes, 3 point seatbelts. Lovely cars but compared to modern vehicles, mmm death traps. Not worried so much about my driving, but lots of drunken coked up lunatics out there😊. This car would be my dream. Tho being in Minnesota, a hardtop would be warmer in spring and fall. Of course garaged in the winter. My uncle Jim had a red 66 convertible. I was born in 69, I barely remember it. He kept it til the second gas shock, Told me it was thirstier then a sailor on shore leave, claimed 5-10 mpg.😂😂. He still regrets selling it tho. Said it was by far the scariest, most dangerous, funnest car he ever owned.
In 1967, some safety upgrades showed up with GM cars...collapsible steering components, seat belts, some cars got front disc brakes standard. 1968 saw even more improvements.@@theboyisnotright6312
Hi, Bill! I'm a huge fan. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato in Italian (Grand Touring Homologated, in English). You scared your friend Mark when you were shifting it with your left hand. I know you were holding it straight with your knee, but still, that's a precious car. No harm done. Thanks for this amazing blast from the past! That GTO is pure rolling art.
I thought the idea behind the Go pro, was to free up his hands, so he wouldn't need to shift with his left hand? He defeated the purpose by having a camera in his right hand. I guess, Bill wants to make sure the Go Pros work okay, before he stops using his handheld...
Yeah that left hand shifting made me cringe... he's an old man, why does he care so much what people think? ("oh God they're looking at me with the gopro on my head they must think I'm a douchebag")
@@lptomtom Considering the cars he shows us, I think people would be staring anyway. Having a gopro on your head to record the experience would be understandable.
The 66 GOAT in triple black and my 69 in Mayfair Maize w/black int (avatar) w/hidden headlights were my two favorites of all time. Let's not dilly-dally here Bill - the GTO WAS the first muscle car and will never come back because Pontiac is gone. Such a tremendous loss. My best buddy has a scar in between his eyes from a cassette tape hurtling off the dashboard of my 69 during an especially torquey launch. Good times.
No. They did wonders with what they had to work with, but modern cars are much better. Engineers did that, and a good number were Americans. Tires, alone... Fuel injection is stock... Metallurgy...
Thanks Bill…saw this post earlier today and relished the thought of watching this evening. What a car…you’re absolutely right - triple black convertible tri-power 4-spd with A/C is holy grail material. IMHO 66 is the most beautiful year for the GTO…stacked head lamps, coke-bottle design, bow tie rear fascia with louvered tail lights. 66-67 is without question the zenith of GM engineering, styling and build quality across every division. Thanks for all you do!
Woah, Bill! This one's an adrenaline-pumper. The '66 GTO was the best-looking year ever. It has the best-looking tail lights. The problem with the '66 was that the tail light panel was prone to rusting, but what an awesome machine!
On my time on the planet that is arguably the most beautiful rear end I've taken in. The hands off the wheel shifting is something else, you've got Gilles Villeneuve beat, sir! Best
Those Holden GTO's were really nice cars. Rock solid at 100 mph. I was very impressed with the handling and performance. Quick story, I was driving from Detroit to Toronto in a red 6 speed car (I work for a car dealer) and when stopped at a traffic light still in Detroit another exact color GTO (identical car) pulled up beside me. We looked at eachother with huge smiles and a wave but being wise we left the intersection without smoking the tires. Just drove away with a wave. Sorry for that boring ending but it was not my car to beat on.
The VE Holden Commodore platform was entirely engineered by Holden and was so good that GM wanted to use it for future GM models but eventually only used it for the 5th generation Camaro.
@@petesmitt I brought an Orange on Black 6 speed Camaro SS brand new with the plastic on the carpets and seats back over one day. That was before they were available in Canada so I had the only one. Got a lot of positive reactions and yes that was also not my car but wow what a ride. The Holden Camaros are way better than the newer ones IMO.
I really wanted to like those, but they were so tiny inside somehow. I'm 6'1" and generally have no trouble sitting in cars even with sunroofs, but I tried sitting in a new GTO when they came out and my head was firmly pressing into the ceiling cloth even with the seat lowered all the way. I was very disappointed.
Another great American automotive car review by Mr Bill himself! Imo, there's not one 60s GM model that was hideous or unattractive in any way whatsoever and this Pontiac is just one example of the beauties that GM produced during that decade!
As a "Carnut" since '51, I learned what GTO stood for while walking past my Biology Teacher's '64 GTO in the Fall of '63! GTO: Grand Turismo Omologato: a European Racing Class! Only six were built?...Wow...that 421 was the max size V8 in the full-size cars, and moved those big beasts very well...I cannot even imagine how a 421 would have propelled a Tempest in 1963!

Gran Tourismo Omoligoto...the standardbearer...godfather of youth oriented engineering, styling and marketing & product package that actually lit the fire on Muscle Car era. Large displacement mill in a intermediate car formula...with performance and image. Honestly the first homoligated (purposed for production numbers) big displacemt in intermediate car. Other makes/models were essentially low production race cars.
1966 and 67 are my favorite years for the Goat. 66 had the 389 in 67 the engine was enlarged to 400 cubic inches also a three speed automatic was available for the first time as a option over the two speed auto. Still the 4 speed is probably the most fun.
I learned to drive on our 1966 GTO, equipped much like this car: 389 with 3-2 barrels, 4-speed with a Hurst shifter from the factory, factory A/C which limited us to a 3.55 rear gear (no 3.73 or 4.10 with air), and positraction. Burgundy coupe with white seats. I was blessed to have the Goat as my daily driver as a teenager.
Thank you Bill for another fantastic video! Woke up today feeling a little down and pessimistic about the world at present and life in general, however as soon as just I saw your new video pop up in my youtube feed I have instantly become as chipper as a bunch of Canadians in the back seat of a '71 Fleetwood. Greetings Bill, this 66 GTO is spectacular!!! It's my favorite year Pontiac!! A good friend of mine bought a new GTO in 64 she kept it for 20 years. Wow! Thanks for the memories, and especially to Mark for allowing you to review this gem and for his stewardship as well. Love those great old songs, Little GTO and ''409 '' as in she's real fine my 409 (Chevy). What a great time to be a teenager in the 60's (until the whole VietNam situation, of course, messed with it to say the least.) But carwise, best time ever. One didn't need a concert or destination. Just go out and ''bomb around.'' Please Bill, figure out a way to drive and shift properly with your right hand, like God made it to be. Too bad Fla doesn't have some nice, curvy traffic-light-free roads to get the full driving experience. I just found your channel the other day, with the 71 Grand Prix 4 speed. Really enjoy your reviews and sense of humor. Good going. Pontiac, ''Home of the Hot Chiefs!''
I’m so glad you have done this review on a Pontiac GTO. One of my all time favourite muscles along with the T/A and Chevelle. One beautiful GTO and a great survivor.
In ‘66 my big sister was a passenger in a gold ‘66 GTO coupe. At 2,000 miles the car strayed off the pavement at high speed crashing into a tree at the driver’s door. Her boyfriend was fatally injured. I will never forget that night. My sister escaped with a broken arm and lots of stitches. She recovered completely thank heavens. Beautiful car and great video bill! Love it!
What a gorgeous and thrilling car. My God, just stunning and historic. And Bill's hilarious camera work 😅is like the cherry on top of a very authentic all-American apple pie. ⚾
Billy! I had a 66 just like that! I put a 454 Hemi Boss in it, nobody came close! I had a dana 9 in rear and a Holley tranny in it. I also put four three-barrel Isky carbs on the beast, not to mention an Edelbrock cam. What a beast!!!
Small world I've been subscribed to your channel since 2016 when I lived in VA. I relocated to Florida in 2021 Mark who owns that GTO is my coworker😂 small world. Beautiful car❤
First car I owned was a 67 GTO in 1979. Back in HS I thought it was the coolest muscle car to own. Always wanted a 66/67 Convertible. Just a bit too pricey now. Great throwback Bill!! Love the vid!!
Excellent video Bill! A truly beautiful piece. Thanks! BTW: how you contort yourself to shift with your left hand is giving me the willies. Cease et desist!
Stop worrying about what people think, a camera strapped to the head is very comon these days - makes life alot easier for you, leaving you hands free the do what ever. Great content Bill 👍
Bill, the work you do to not only video these wonderful cars, but to also summarize historical backgrounds and collect other interesting related information for your viewers is much appreciated. Your willingness to trial wearing that GoPro on your head shows again what a good sport you are, sir. GM was right on the sweet spot with these early GTO’s. I’ve always found my favourite cars over the years were about this size. The perfect combination of comfort, convenience and performance. This is sure a pretty car, inside and out. Got a really nice sound too.
What a phenomenal car Bill! This came from a great era as you rightly say, when optimism abounded and everything seemed possible. What a great time to have been alive.
Our American Fantasy --that Bill touched upon--was so reflective of the cars, and the lifestyle of that era...Being a Boomer, I can tell you it was a good time to feel good about the USA. Harsh reality eventually took us down another road. This GTO is likely the best representative of that special time in cultural history. Great review Bill!...and rest assured, people staring at you were envious!
Thanks for this one Bill ! There's nothing like 1960s PONTIACS, an era that we'll never see again, I'm sorry to report. GTO was such a part of the era of the mid 1960s, very cool. Love the tripower setup ! You can't have too many PONTIAC reviews IMO, especially from this era. Keep them coming ! I was one of those that advocted a go-pro camera set up, but you might want to look at something with a different lens. The image distortion on that one was making me feel disoriented, really a bit much.
The early to mid 60s Pontiac were the coolest ,nicest looking cars all time in my book. Sleek, powerful w/ gorgeous dash, steering wheels & interiors in general. For crying out loud, they introduced 8 lug wheels on the Grand Prix.
Just saw this video! Another masterpiece on another great classic car think 1966 was the year that General Motors cars were at their very best. The GoPro footage is new. It is something you will get used to. He will get better as it as you have done with this series. It's a mad day here in Victorville Sunny with clouds
Thank you Bill - for taking me back to my high school days when I had 1 of these. Also a 65 Catalina 2+2. I truly miss both, they were as near to the perfect cars as could be had......
This was awesome! I love these GTOs 1966, 1967. Best styling ever of the GTO. Interior of these cars are beautiful. My next door neighbor growing up was a single mom raising 2 kids on her own, had a 1966 Pontiac LeMans. It was a iced blue color with dark blue interior and I was obsessed with her car. I got to ride in it once when she took me, her own son, another neighbor kid to school one morning. It's fun to ride in these cars. I was so jealous of Jimmy her son because he got to ride in it everyday.
Great video. An absolute classic (Bill). The car too! Mild cam, my a**! Felt tike I was standing in the pits at a race! As a proud Canadian, I feel very chipper about discovering this channel. Anyone who does a little research will discover that there is far more to this old curmudgeon than Bill lets on. What a class act he is.
Yeah, I lived in Georgia for years. Now in Idaho where people don’t know from steamy heat. The sweetest car I’ve seen in years. Good Lord! Awesome show man!
I think the whole point of the go-pro suggestion is so that you would have both hands free to operate the car. I'd be damn nervous too, knowing my irreplaceable car was careening about with a one-armed whiskey-laden pilot... 🤔 I do really enjoy Bill's videos but I'm holding my breath during some of the driving parts.
Thank you for showing us the tail lights and brake lights at the intro. I love lights, and the huge variety of vehicle lighting styles over the years provides a rich source of interest.
Beautiful, I spent a lot of time in my buddies fathers (original owner) similar optioned GTO conv, only 4 BBL 4 spd but with Hurst wheels. Every time we encouraged him as little punks to pour the coals to it the AC belt would blow off. He traded it in for a 1970 Buick GS, after agreed price we removed the Hurst wheels for steelies with hubs and a battery that only would run after a push start! Don't forget emission controls. Good to have you back.
My absolute favorite muscle car, doesn't get much better than this. Thanks for showing her off. I like the gopro mounted in the center best for the angle.
Great review of a fantastic car! I think the GoPro footage came out just fine. Stick with it and before long you'll enjoy having both hands free to drive the car. And besides, these days if someone sees you driving a car like this with a GoPro strapped to your head they'll just assume you're a TH-cam star.
Very beautiful piece of history with the tri-power 4 speed! 00:42 . . . That is interesting to see the front parking lights go out when the headlights are turned on, I thought there was something wrong with the way the headlight switch was wired on my 1967 Pontiac Parisienne convertible, because the same thing happens. Maybe GM was not wiring the front parking lights to be powered at the same time as the headlights by design?
You have a '67 Parisienne! Nice! Back in the '60's my dad had a '66 2-dr. Grande Parisienne with the 4bbl 327. Great car! Pretty much the same front as this GTO. I don't recall if his front grille lights went off when the headlights were on but they may have. Many cars of that time were like that.
@@bobjohnson1587 The 1967 Parisienne convertible I have is 283 cu.in. with 2 spd Powerglide. Not many options, but it does have power windows and power top.
Thank you Bill, awesome on so many levels. Many thanks also to the owner for making this video happen. Great to you ventured out into the unknown with new recording gear. Possibly takes some getting used to the ins and outs. But cool you give the new setup a try nonetheless. Anyhow, thank you very much for the latest videos, very special treats. Like added to the count and from The Old Continent, cheers 😊✌
Hey "Safari Bill" ( animal lover), please keep the PONCHO'S coming!! From a Pontiac lover from frozen Delaware. That '66' is absolutely beautiful, the TITS in muscle cars. Thank God you aren't gonna hold camera while driving this baby! Great monologs with your videos. Thanks!!
Today I was on I 75 at Naples and looked for something old screaming down the on ramp. I did see a 'triple black '66 Chevelle Malibu convertable once we got off.
This video is definitely in the top 10 of Bill’s videos. The car is the embodiment of what a muscle car was. It was done on the cheap and the down low by John Delorean, who was an arrogant bastard, egomaniac and a genius simultaneously. Thanks for the “door sill” acknowledgment Bill! Brain farts happen to us all as we get older. I’ve got 10 years on you and I have them on occasion as well. As to the three camera setup. I think if you can setup the Go-Pro so that it isn’t quite so wide angle it would have been better. Watching you having to fix the camera in the console, hold another and shift this beast was testament to your manual dexterity to say the least. Thanks for making my evening and I’m half scared shitless and half looking forward to the Renault video.
A couple people might laugh at the GoPro, but TENS of thousands more will get to enjoy the video its capturing! Who cares what they think, Bill. I loved this video and the new driving experience, personally.
I agree that go-pros look dorky, but I must say that it provides a superior view. The way you vocalize your disdain for the new camera setup is comical too 😂
My ultimate dream car! I would love to drive that 66' GTO. I had a 66' LeMans convertible that had a factory four-speed and posi, but just a 326 2bbl. motor. It was quick but nothing like that goat. The 389 was a great motor..
That's not a car, it's a dream. That idle struck fire to my soul!
Bill, this has to be the holy grail of all muscle cars! Tri power, 4 speed, convertible. As good as it gets, the ultimate trifecta!
Convertibles are rubbish and are only rare because only an idiot would buy a convertible muscle car.
Got to agree with you there. Just stunning and as a Brit these cars were just so stylish you couldn’t help but lust after them.

What a beast Bill , loved it , wish it was mine from Melbourne Austraia 🦘
Stop worrying about what people think, a camera strapped to the head is very comon these days - makes life alot easier for you, leaving you hands free the do what ever. Great content Bill 👍
Of course he's going to be concerned about the quality of the video.
Handheld cam is way better
@@MrCarGuy Better for the walk-around, but not for driving.
And thank you to this Mark gentleman for loaning his car for this. What a treat for us viewers. Just perfection
Uncle Billy!!!!! Have a great weekend sir! Thanks for making my Friday bud 🙏🙏🙏
Now that’s perfection! Thanks Bill.
Great video! You should have trusted the Go-Pro on your head and put that handheld down to have a better drive.
Advocated. 😀
@@bobjohnson1587 Typos happen.. even to the NY Times.
Just saw this video! Another masterpiece on another great classic car think 1966 was the year that General Motors cars were at their very best. The GoPro footage is new. It is something you will get used to. He will get better as it as you have done with this series. It's a mad day here in Victorville Sunny with clouds
It sounds like a radial engine from a WWII fighter! Thanks for the review, as always very entertaining and informative.
God Bless you Bill. You’re not the only one.
Thanks!!
Thank u Mark. Thank you Bill. Great car, great video
one of my alltime favourites----thank you Bill.
Today I was on I 75 at Naples and looked for something old screaming down the on ramp. I did see a 'triple black '66 Chevelle Malibu convertable once we got off.
Came for the southern Florida weather and animal report, thanks for the update Bill, I'll check the car out later when I have a little more time.
Awesome and beautiful GTO. Good job, Bill. I must say that I do enjoy when you complain about the weather. The way you do it is hilarious.
U have no idear how enthused and appreciative I am that you finally chose to use a body cam/go pro for the drive.
Best and most humorous videos on TH-cam 👍🏻
We are endeared to you, Bill
For the tid bits and sidebar.
Always a joy.
Thanks Bill . I have no idea about a lot of the US cars but love to learn
A couple people might laugh at the GoPro, but TENS of thousands more will get to enjoy the video its capturing! Who cares what they think, Bill. I loved this video and the new driving experience, personally.
Man!! I could watch this all Day😍😍
OMG I think I was salivating through this whole video.A work of art car for sure.
Bill you brought the goat back!!
Why he went on to build his time machine...classic Bill
With that exhaust note who needs a radio.
I agree that go-pros look dorky, but I must say that it provides a superior view. The way you vocalize your disdain for the new camera setup is comical too 😂
Absolutely gorgeous GTO. Love love this episode and this beauty. Thank you, Bill, for your hard work.
This by far the best car in your videos in my time watching. GTO is one hell of a muscle car and this is my favorite!!! Good job Bill 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Another beautiful Pontiac!
WOW, just freaking wow! It's got it all!
Absolute perfection GOOD SHOW
OMG, I am so happy with this video! This is art on wheels.
I had a 67 lemans . A 67 tempest custom and now a 72 GTO. I’m Pontiac thru and thru . Great videos keep these old muscle cars coming if you can !
Bill as usual you do a great job bringing great cars to the channel!!
My ultimate dream car! I would love to drive that 66' GTO. I had a 66' LeMans convertible that had a factory four-speed and posi, but just a 326 2bbl. motor. It was quick but nothing like that goat. The 389 was a great motor..
