Great tutorial, thank you! I was trying to figure out how to add a flat collar to an existing shirt and this helped me figure out what to measure

Hello Charlotta, how would I make the neckline wider and the collar stand away from the neck to create a portrait like framing of the head and neck like a Jackie style neckline ?
Am I right in thinking that I would widen the neckline front and back first and that the stand away would be by creating a lot of overlap at the shoulder ? Thanks for your help . Marianne

Hi Marianne, you’re already worked it all out by yourself. Yes, widen the neck first to create your desired shape and then draft the collar with lots of overlap at the shoulder. I might start with 4cm and then make a quick toile to see how the collar sits.
      Enjoy your drafting!

Do you have to allow for shoulder seams, would the collar have to be a bit shorter to fit the neck after the shoulder seams are sewn?

Hi Daisy, I’m drafting the collar with my blocks, which don’t have seam allowance. I draw on the seam allowance afterwards. If you’re using an existing sewing pattern, then you need to take the seam allowance off first. The best thing is to copy through your pattern on a different price of paper and take all the seam allowance off.

      Dear Shadow,
Do you mean at the shoulder or at the the CF?
At shoulder I normally overlap it by 4cm to make the collar sit nicely.
The Centre Front lower by 1cm.
      Does that help at all?
      All the best, Charlotta

It's very distracting when 2 people take turns talking.
