In the late 70s early 80s 8mm home movies were more common than video. But yeah, that looks definitely like it was video. maybe because they were in California they had easier access to it.
Neat, they actually admit that Charlotte Caffee joined the band because of her songwriting capability (bonus she could play the guitar and keyboards). Never knew about the UK trip - glad they excelled beyond that.
The girls signed a deal with indie punk label Stiff Records in England in 1980. Then Rough Trade (the label that gave The Smiths to the world) signed them to distribution in UK and Continental Europe and the girls released the single "We Got the Beat", which went indie UK Top 3. They were in virtually all British music press of that time. When they came back to USA dozens of labels want them, because of the success in Britain. So the Go Go's got more than one year to have a record deal in America. Meanwhile, they on the top of charts the other side of the Atlantic and into the maelstrom of the European Pos punk.
How could somebody that doesn't know anything about playing music learn how to be good enough to do an album like Beauty and the Beat. That just blows my mind. When I first heard that I was like no way. That music was too good to be from somebody that hadn't played their whole life.
going tonight at the Hollywood Bowl. It's been 30 plus years since I saw the Go Go's & the Police in Minneapolis. My girlfriend and I are back together after 30 years as well! She looks (a LOT) like Belinda and I love her to pieces!!

I love punk rock n’roll of all kinds, and I especially like punk bands that start out not knowing how to play; nodding to the Germs, Ramones etc. I also like groupies who by sheer initiative to be like their heroes pick up instruments with no talent or knowledge of songwriting just go for it learning along the way, taking all the heckles and turning that hate back on the hater and rising above it. The girls in the Go Go’s were groupies and they got shit for it, for daring to rise up in a male dominated scene. Fuck it, even if they had no talent they were taking power back just taking to the stage and making loud electrified noise. And now the boys had to be the groupies! Hahahaha!

That's why it all really gelled once Gina came aboard. She's awesome. She was their, Ringo. I wish they would've maintained their punk roots though. Still, a thoroughly enjoyable sound, and they're easy on the eyes. Especially, for me, Jane Wiedlin. I just think she is freaking, 'it'!

Out of the five members, I think Jane always gave the best interviews, like her heart was in the right place when she was answering questions.
Jane Drano was the real punk rocker.
I'm amazed that they even have video footage of those early club years.
TOTALLY AGREE!

this is some great stuff = it should be on a Go Go's Documentary... Blu-Ray or DVD in U-HD (4k HD)...
Go-Gos were one of THE Best dangerous, FUN bands to come out of LA
...before the album
I'm VERY Lucky to have seen them before that
I am also amazed that they even found these early clips lol

Love The Go-Go's.
I truly wanted to hear their version of the GERM's song.
I see I'm not the only one who came here expecting that.
Same here! Belinda even has history with the band!
THAT'S WHAT I WAS HOPING FOR! 😭

Omg i love their punk era, they should play them again

Charlotte Caffrey is the answer.
Charlotte and Gina. Gina forced them to rehearse every day and whipped them into shape.
Jane has the cutest voice.
This is why people scraped and clawed to get out of the punk into pop, including Johnny Rotten and Sting.
From punk to bubblegum.

Does anyone know the song at 1:55?
The Go Gos were a much better punk band than a pop band. I crave all early concert footage and recordings!
1:35 is where Green Day's Billy Joe Tolliver got his look.
I was thinking the exact same thing. lol
isnt it billy joe Armstrong?

True! They're Smokin, esp Jane. 😘

Wrong. They used to play with The Germs.
