Kazuya is really something regarding character design. I'd say his original design was a cross between Ryu and Akira. Face wise? Definitely. He looks even more menacing and not over the top like when he got older. But outfit wise? T8 default Kaz clears everything by a mile…
Kazuya’s current look is like a modern take on a vampire, which is what I think they were going for with his tekken 2 look. Instead of sitting in a castle, he’s in his 40 story corporate tower in the position of a ceo who sucks the life out of all of those beneath him. When I see his reptile skin coat I cant help but be reminded of something like castlevanias’s dracula’s look with the full body cloak. Even his devil transformation is something akin to dracula’s second form, a hideous winged beast that no longer cares about keeping up the facade of someone noble and refined.
If you ask me, Tekken 2-4 Devil Kazuya was his best version. He looked more inspired by mythology, whereas the modern designs are more like an MMO monster. I liked his animal legs, simpler design, messier hair, and creepier aesthetic.
In Kazuya’s case I think we could actually call him a sharp dressed man. When you are going into a tournament and if you got a certain style and preference, then what’s the sense of changing it? If it works it works, I mean we’re talking about a guy whose main dream is having the world’s largest sneaker collection.
The smash ones looks like a distilled version of his classic looks, which is what every single smash character is designed to look like (with the notable exception of specific characters like link)
The form from Tekken 2 is actually different from the one we have in in Rage Art&Heat mode. The red eyes showed Kazuya was not in control and it was just Devil. The chest scar also glowed red He had much longer and wilder hair His horns were golden He had a small tail Sharp elbows And furry monster legs The modern one is a much less drastic change. Having the same hair,no glowing red stuff, normal legs etc. This is because his Devil Gene is stated to have gotten fragmented in Tekken 2 so the transformation is incomplete. After taking Azazels power he briefly shows two red eyes, showing he had again a complete devil gene. The normal Devil forms is called Hybrid Devil The Final Devil from Tekken 7 is officially called "Devil Kazuya-X" True Devil is just Devil-X with Azazels power on top of it,you can see the Devil X skin in his chest eye where the armor shows an opening -Tekken 7/8 Rage/Heat Devil(37.5%) -Tekken 2 Devil(50%) -Tekken 7 Devil-X(75%) -True Devil(100%)
Tekken 6 is his most accurate post volcano look, while TTT is the best "normal" Kazuya, and TK8 has his best costumes. Also Kazuya's crazy hair in his TK2 devil form has always been sick, idc what no one says and I wish they brought it back.
You’re not alone with that comparison. Many people still think that way. Even as a kid, I was constantly reminded of Vegeta (specifically Saiyan Saga or Majin form) whenever I saw Kazuya. As a Vegeta fangirl myself, I still get that feeling for all the right reasons. I just grew to love Kazuya more as I got older, comparisons aside.
One thing I love about the design for Kazuya in the early games, especially in Tekken 2 and Tag 1, is that he looks somewhat more like a traditional Japanese man. Just something about that is cool to me. Makes him look a bit more realistic, even with the old graphics. Also, it should go without saying, but the purple boss suit in T2/Tag 1 is GOATed.
You going through the Devil forms really hits how much I dislike how they all look but I'm so glad they opted out of Pubic Hair Devil for the dragon-like scales instead. It fits the character and motif better as Dracula is means "son of the dragon". I like how you pointed out that his T2 appearance looks more vampiric too. I never looked at it like that but it kinda does!

Original Devil Kazuya looks more like he is wearing a devil costume than actually being a devil. I love the vampire suit hehe. Tekken 8 Kazuya kinda... sexy... 👀 I kinda prefer the more **simpler** Devil designs but ah well.
Max. The main reason they make Kazuya look like a FIGHTER more than a CEO. Is because. When you in the ring your gonna LOOK more of a FIGHTER than a CEO.
As someone who hasn't played Tekken since 3 and NEVER paid attention to the 'story', I thought the quip about sneakers at 2:12 was just a joke... the fact that it came full circle with the clip at 20:11 is PEAK character development.
Ive always seen tekken 1 Devil Kazuya as a Devilman x Jojo Star Platinum. Especially with the rumor that Paul mightve been based off of Polnareff from jojos
Not sure how you got through this design review without mentioning Kazuya's signature, ten-studded fighting gloves. I believe Kazuya is in Tekken 3 (in spirit) right from the top when they put out the promotional material! Jin, on the poster, is pulling on the same ten-studded gloves that his dad did, signifying, at least for that game, that Heihachi is going down. Anyway, most non-Devil Kaz designs have the gloves, too, even occasionally incorporating them as spikes when he goes Devil. Do we like the studded gloves? Jin loses them for T4 and T5, but they're back in T6, T7, and T8. An accident, or maybe heralding his arc? Heihachi (my fav, RIP) just has wrist and knuckle wraps, and Jinpachi has none (but some bangles). And so finishes my lineage of Mishima fist-wear. Either way, most Kaz designs include the 10-studded punchers and sometimes Jin, too. Do we need the gloves to summon the Devil? I dunno. Correlation is not causation.
I’ve always felt the “executive dickhead” look was supposed to be like a Yakuza from a Takashi Miike film and Kazuya is an anagram for Yakuza. In Tekken 8 he’s really got a 90s early 00s yakuza outfit and it’s the best he’s ever looked.
Tekken 4's fancier outfit is my favorite. The purple suit is flashy, but I like how understated his corporate evil is in T4's color choices, also- shades. The red eye is iconic, true, but shades... are just so cool...
Holy Crap. I thought I was the only one who noticed the similarities between Tag 1 Kazuya outfit and his 7 default. It's like, finally they were able to being that outfit to life.
I disagree on the Tekken 2 outfit. Him looking like a vampire fits the darker very operatic vibe Tekken 2 had. Plus it’s a prelude to his devil form and how this guy isn’t even human anymore.

Tekken 8 Kazuya kinda... sexy... 👀 I kinda prefer the more **simpler** Devil designs but ah well.

This is what I’ve always referred to as the “cool dad” costume for Kaz
The most badass character ever
I actually really like classic Kazuyas design
Max. The main reason they make Kazuya look like a FIGHTER more than a CEO. Is because. When you in the ring your gonna LOOK more of a FIGHTER than a CEO.
That would make sense if 90% of Tekken fights didn't happen in random streets, mansions, temples or science labs
For someone who fights barefoot, I find it ironic that he was such a sneaker head
thats the most happy smile i've ever see from Kazuya....
like he waited for long time to show his sneaker collection... lol
Tekken 4 Kazuya head looks like FF7 logo
Id love to see a King visual history. Even tho he’s been the same for the most part lol
He hasn’t been the same anymore than Kaz has. King (counting both of them, of course) got some fun alt outfits 😺👍
Tekken 8 Devil Kaz looks like a Power Ranger villain
As someone who hasn't played Tekken since 3 and NEVER paid attention to the 'story', I thought the quip about sneakers at 2:12 was just a joke... the fact that it came full circle with the clip at 20:11 is PEAK character development.
Ive always seen tekken 1 Devil Kazuya as a Devilman x Jojo Star Platinum. Especially with the rumor that Paul mightve been based off of Polnareff from jojos
Kinda underwhelming how TEKKEN 8 doesnt let me do a 1 to 1 copy of TEKKEN 3 King's drip. That outfit went HARD.
12:10 - Jun wanted to see it! 🤣🤣🤣
Devil Kazuya in Tekken 1 is basically Star platinum from JoJo
Seeing Kazuya in that Tekken 1 costume in Tekken 9 after 8's story would be the wildest thing.
Kazuya fixed his hairline with all that money.
Kaz's purple suit is unparalleled drip
Dorya
There was a change to his pants over the years where it goes from the cloud with lightning to the flames, before returning
I’ve always felt the “executive dickhead” look was supposed to be like a Yakuza from a Takashi Miike film and Kazuya is an anagram for Yakuza. In Tekken 8 he’s really got a 90s early 00s yakuza outfit and it’s the best he’s ever looked.
true devil kaz in tekken 8 reminds me of diabolos from final fantasy (minus the extra always folded arms)
8:15 Looking at Kazuya's hair Tekken 5, I noticed he didn't have a widow's peak in Tekken 2 and Tekken Tag
Tekken 4's fancier outfit is my favorite. The purple suit is flashy, but I like how understated his corporate evil is in T4's color choices, also- shades. The red eye is iconic, true, but shades... are just so cool...
I think it's funny that the main antagonist just has such a specific hobby that he takes to the extreme
Is max pronouncing Kazuya like that a meme? It's driving me up the wall
I love how Tekken 1 Devil is just Star Platinum
Tekken 2 P2 costume forever forgoten 😢
just jumping into tekken 8 kazuya looks super developed the ascetics are as simple as possible then it jumps into his over the top armor was great presentation
A series of this with other characters would be very cool. King or Sf characters for example
"kazuya is like don't you dare ask me to change my clothes" considering how he doesn't want anybody to change his ways, it makes sense
