- Many teachers, occupational therapists and educational specialists often recommend use of a pencil grip to help a child stabilize their pencil and improve handwriting. Tiffany Birt, Occupaional Therapist and founding partner of The Therapy Group shows you how to quickly make a pencil grip.
Thank you!!!! My son is 17 and has always reverted back to his old ways. I wasn’t too worried about it because his handwriting is legible. But he wants to be an animator and I think his grip is holding his drawing skills back. Thanks for this!!!
hi ! i have the same problem , my thumb keeps getting stiffer and straight while writing ,how did he overcome
i think that is cool and will work for me
My grip on a pen/pencil is normal and fine. I purchased the aid with the dolphin for my developmentally normal 4-year-old son as a learning tool. But when I tried the device out, before using it on my son, I found it annoying. The small loop pulls the top end of the pencil back too hard for comfortable writing. Instead of buying this device ($10 on Amazon), I think having your child substitute a simple cotton ball in place of the dolphin, and just verbally correct the child if they try to elevate the back end of the pencil too high, is good enough, and its price is essentially nothing.
where can buy the pencil grip? I checked on Amazon.com and could not find it.
Milena Pastori you are right
I turn 13 in March and I found out that I have been holding my pencil wrong ever since. I talked to my teacher and she said that technically it is wrong but I have very nice handwriting. I made the grip but do I really need it? I hold my pencil in the way where your index and middle finger are on top of the pencil and my ring and pinky are under the pencil and my thumb rests on top of my index finger. Do I need the grip?
I'm 13 and learned I've been holding it wrong too! I've stopped because I get blisters on my ring finger!
Rach Ess Meh too
For most people it doesn't work it'r probably because you get more stiff, because you have to focus more. What most people make wrong with their kid's is, that you don't allow them to make mistakes. If you want them to learn the correct holding. Tell them to relax their hand. Let them wiggle it around, then they should form the right hold, with an imaginary pencil. And you have a look and may direct them. They shuld be loos and every finger should have it's approximate position. It may help to tell them why wich finger is where and what it's pourpouse is going to be. Then let them, with their other non-writing hand, place the real pen into the position of the imaginary one, so that they get a feeling for how relaxed you can hold a pen and still have him controlled and secured between your fingers.
Then let them doodle around, draw cirlces and lines. And tell them to feel how easy and relaxed their hand feels. This feeling is what writing makes fun. Just beeing able to create figures of any kind with so less effort will help them be more open to actual writing.
And then after a while of doodling. You present the first letters. If possible let them sit left or right to your side. Maybe even in front of you. But make sure they can see your hand good. If they understand fast then one side is enough, if they try to look around your hand, let them "wander" around you to see your hand from the angel that is most interesting to them.
Then show them how you write the first letter. People and especially kids learn fastest from observing someone doing what they should learn. So if you can write the first letters with a good hold and a relaxed hand. And even better with a good and clear lettering (form and shape) then they will learn quite fast how to write the letter you presented. If a whole letter is too complicated for the moment then breake the letter down into it's basic strokes.
Just let them experiment, don't be stubborn or rigid. Learning is the one branch that got you to your goal on your journey of dozends of dead ends.
Thank you so much! This has instantly helped my daughter so much with her grip! She has struggled with pencil grip since the beginning, she is now in grade 1. When she uses the "bracelet" even she can see what needs to be corrected! SO much appreciation! ;) Bless you!
Your pencil ✏️ grip is awesome 👏🏻 but when you tie the knot of the band its coming like one ☝🏻 big and one ☝🏻 of them small but for me its coming like both of them small but still it fits to my wrist
Can you show the triangle pencil grips please?
thanks!!! ☺☺☺☺♫♫♫
im 9 and i have problems with writing all the time.
For a 6th grader?
Just what I was looking for! Thank you!
Thank you for this video my son was 17 he did not writing good but know he becomes good writing
How to writing a good hand writing
my right ear is sad
I thought my right ear is deaf tho
0:38 is exactly how I hold my pencil now. I have an extremely tight grip and am trying to unlearn this.
For those that are asking about the loop and bead style handwriting aid, it is called The HandiWriter, patent# 5980257 and was created and made by my company, HandiThings LLC. You can purchase on our website, www.handithings.com for an affordable price.
0:35 is perfect. Maintain a curve in the index finger to promote smooth writing by co-ordinating the wrist and index finger flexion
As you rightly note, some people do better than others with a particular grip. I’m wondering what you might say about this new grip from Therapro: www.therapro.com/Browse-Category/Pencil-Grips/TriOn-Pencil-Grip.html
Zaner bloser offer a writing frame which was a great help for me to learn from the shoulder movement. david schell
Thanks for the video I'm 30 and never had anyone show me how to grab and manipulate a pencil effectively. Your explanations are so clear and easy to follow.
I'm 13 and my mom says I hold my pencil wrong so thanks for sharing!
Great! Thanks!
My son has SPD and has had so much trouble writing, we have been going to Occupational therapy and his fine motor issues and sensory issues have improved and his writing is becoming more legible but he is still having trouble holding the pencil correctly and putting enough pressure to write darker. I just made this bracelet 5 minutes ago and he's writing perfectly. I am in tears right now! Thank you so much, I shared the pictures of my son writing with it and texted it to his OT, thank you!!!
it was quite unexpected :)
Super
Im 13 and my hands shiver while i write! HELP ME PLS
If I do it the "right" way my hand hurts really bad.
Excellent as an elementary student I was taught cursive in the second grade I took right to it and partly because I thought cursive was outstanding first second my teacher had really cool looking pens that took a large lead to help enable small hands this band I am sure would have been a suburb aid to this day I use cursive regularly as I've journaled over 25 years all by hand all cursive I get compliments often. I personally love this and can not wait to try it out then teach my granddaughters yay!
This a great idea, however, I am not sure where I can buy the "loom" that you are using to make the grip! Could you please send me that info? Thank you
It would be nice if you could make one of these without the loop, like just using a stray piece of elastic..
That's great. Thank you so much.
Just a quick word of appreciation. Great concept, both for an adult such as myself to retrain fine motor movement, and for my children to incorporate into their core writing skills. Thanks!
I write the regular way yet I have bad hand writing and I really wanna draw, but it comes out shaky I guess or something. qq

Awesome. I have a few of those other grips that were in your video and I can't remember how to use them. I was actually looking for a video that showed me and came upon your video. What's almost as cool as your video is that my sons OT used the same grip with him and it worked. I just made 4 (2 for home, 2 for school) and can't wait for my son to start using it. Thank you so much for this great idea!!
Thank you! We will be trying this! One great thing about this is that my nine year old is looking forward to making herself.
Fantastic clear and concise video.. Thanks.
yup um where can i buy a pencil grip becasue it hurts my fingers when i write to much
This is perfect for me! I was wondering where exactly did you get the pink grip?
I will definitely try this for my 4 year old.
pencil grips are for people who's fingers hurt when writing
Gordon & Ruth Panther exactly it doesn't matter which way you hold it my damn fingers just hurt

Had anyone tried this working with lefties? I'm wondering if this would help some students but the ones needing help are left handed.
Matt Kummer Yes, this grip works really well for lefties.
Speak louder please

Hi I have a bump on my ring finger from writing because I naturally write hard. Does anyone know how, if possible, to get rid of a writer's bump?
SAME !!! BUT I IT IN THE INDEX FINGER
I have this bump on my middle finger (when I was little it got stuck in a door or something) and it's starting to hurt when I'm writing, because it just so happens to be right where the pencil leans on and stuff.
+Emma Hatzold Use a fountain pen so ink flows onto the paper with no pressure onto the hand
Waxgecko Where can I get one?
Check the posture and position of your thumb on the pencil relative to the pointer finger and the writing tip of the pencil. When the "tripod" contact point is too close to the writing tip, you are forced to pinch and push down to get the writing tip to touch the page. When your thumb is riding on the pencil in a place that puts it closer to the writing tip than the tip of the pointer finger, it causes the distal joint of the pointer to be bent backward (distended) and creating a lot of pressure. Either of these situations or a combination will cause the callous you describe to form over time. Change the position of the tripod or thumb to relieve the pressure and the callous will eventually go away because you are no longer mashing the pencil into the side of your finger.
What if you need to erase.
It doesn't work I made one
I use those
Where do you find "loom" ?
Here's a link for the refills for a Loom craft (what she was talking about):
www.amazon.com/Colorbok-Design-Loom-Loop-Refill/dp/B002T3QWOY/ref=pd_sim_21_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B002T3QWOY&pd_rd_r=69cc91e6-77cf-11e8-960c-03a57897ed89&pd_rd_w=2Jx7y&pd_rd_wg=kr9PQ&pf_rd_i=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=7967298517161621930&pf_rd_r=QAV03EPTW14BVG21DWK6&pf_rd_s=desktop-dp-sims&pf_rd_t=40701&psc=1&refRID=QAV03EPTW14BVG21DWK6
If the link doesn't work, just search for "Child Loom Kit" and you will see the options. I used a elastic head band of mine. It's the thin type (like a large pony tail holder) purchased at the Mart. It's a little big, so I knotted it off for my son and just cut the excess after making sure the ends would not unravel. Good luck in your search!
it's good✏
It made me worse
