I arrived here early one morning, drawn by curiosity; (it was in the "to watch" list , aside the Baumgartner Fine Art Restoration video, I had been glued to for the previous hour.) I'm actually a bit sad that I had to wait until I was 80 years old, to hear these divinely uplifting sounds for the first time. I'm now on a (lockdown) quest, to hear as much more of his work as I can find; I'll be back, whenever my soul needs a little lift! Thank you Mr Walker!
This is one the most beautiful pieces I've heard in a long time. This gives me joy, and I love the diversity of the orchestra, wish more classical performing groups were like this.
Two years on and I still live for the moment that is 3:19-3:23 (plus the build up, of course). I remember it like it was 5 minutes ago. Can’t wait for the day we can play together again.
Another gem of a slow movement from an early String Quartet (1946) by George Walker, arranged for a larger string ensemble, the same genesis as Barber's "Adagio for strings." The quality of the writing is superb, the music at least an equal to the Barber.
greetings from the UK I heard this on radio 3 a moment ago and thought how beautiful this piece was and then found it here. How well constructed this composition is and played so sensitively by an orchestra I have never seen before. A real treat and thank you very much for uploading.
I'm doing a short paper on George Walker for my Music Bibliography class as I watch this. Absolutely beautiful. Saddened that I was unaware of Dr. Walker until a few weeks ago.
I can't believe I haven't heard of George Walker before, that the Baltimore Symphony hasn't played his music. This is a lovely work. Why have they resegregated themselves?
@@erpollock This is not a segregated orchestra. It is majority Black, Asian and ethnically diverse and regularly includes white players. Its formation along those lines was and is essential to give Black, Asian and ethnically diverse classical players and composers a platform in an industry which has been unfairly skewed against those players and composers for centuries.

This certainly is the companion piece to Barber's Adagio for Strings. Tell me please, why isn't this as well known as the Barber Adagio? We all know why and that's a shame ! This is a magnificent piece of writing. This could be programmed with Arnold Schoenberg Transfigured Night. This is powerful expressive music right from and to the ❤❤❤❤ !
Among classical musicians, it is very much as well known as the Barber Adagio. Barber and Walker studied composition with the same teacher. I was introduced to both of these compositions at the same time, in music school in the 1970s. Stop trying to interject race into everything.
Hi Larry. I don’t remember why, but we played it for George Walker over video link to get his comments and thoughts. It’s likely that he spotted an error - possibly with the publishers.
This is the most underrated piece of music I've ever heard

There is no diversity in the orchestra, it has been segregated representing one race. The music however is beautiful.
@@erpollock Please see my reply to your reply to burdrchitect for clarification.
If you want diversity go see ensemble obiora in Montréal Canada.

You’re right, one race the Human Race
For composers and musicians of such talent we should all be profoundly grateful. Splendid.
I have needed this music for ages. I feel healed.

Such a beautiful, noble piece! The Cincinnati Symphony will be playing it in 2020.
No they won’t

George Walker a composer of Jamaican heritage although born in Washington DC . He was the first black composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for music.
❤ what a triumph of a composition and how this orchestra bring its nuances to our attention… astoundingly beautiful.. just glorious. Thank you 🙏🏻🤩 ❤
I'm just so very grateful for this posting. Thank you.
Love the diversity of this orchestra. And the piece.
The music is beautiful; the orchestra is not diverse, it is segregated by race.

Here's a sonorous triumph.
Is that Sheku's brother? 1st violins, 2nd row inside?
It certainly is, another Mason talent
Yeah
Which Orchestra is this and who is the conductor? Thanks.
Chineke! Orchestra conducted by Kevin John Edusei on Aug. 30, 2017
@@lisabarnes8355 Edusei... he's Ghanaian!
Does anyone know the reasoning or scholarship that went into the 2nd violins in measure 51 playing a "d" instead of an e-flat?
who cares

The guy conducting...no. he's got a song in his head, but the concert knows the piece!
