I’m going to build this wing in honor of you Sam ! , you got me hooked on rc hobby when I found your channel last year in January . RIP , gone but not forgotten , I will continue to watch your channel and learn as much as I can and try to test a lot of the same experiments as you have done, thanks Sam !
I mean. Here i am wanting to build a wing just to have a second plane. And I see you. Literally making one out of materials from the dollar tree. Hats off to you. Great job!
Gavin Remme. After I crashed my Opterra doing night FPV, I got a video of it in the middle of the snowy field. I was glad I could still make it beep and flash.
I wish he was still able to make creations like this, love comments that are good and teach us all about aerodynamics and how the plane works and just make more planes 😔
I'm building almost the same thing. My delta wing will run the FrSky S6R instead of a FC, 2204 motor, 20A ESC w/BEC, 5x4.5 prop. Same Eagle and Vtx. My printer is pumping out parts for a work order and I cant print hobby stuff yet. I like the simple wing design, I may have to try it.
What should I learn to make a successful RC airplane? I'm thinking about making one for my EPQ in A levels but I have no experience or background knowledge about airplanes other than the forces. Thanks!
Im very new to rc planes. I do have reasonable knowledge on subsonic aerodynamics and im a computer programmer by trade. So, those 2 elements are not an issue. I need an automated system which will bring my plane back to its takeoff place (within a margin of
dar0 Lots of BECs are linear regulators. Though they're usually linear on low cell count (3S or less) ESCs. Technically, Samm Sheperd's regulator is a BEC. (It eliminated the needed battery for the servos, thus it was a Battery Elimination Circuit.) Aren't TH-cam comments great. Where else can one be so nit picky about details like these? :) Very cool project Samm Sheperd. Thanks for posting.
What does "fly by wire" mean when referring to model aircraft? It seems to me that RC models are almost necessarily fly-by-wire in a sense, but I may be missing something.
Really nice. You have a gift for leveraging different components to create an emergent flying machine greater than the sum of the parts. Is that lead solder? :)
I just saw Captain Joe's video on nacelle strakes. As soon as he said angle of attack I thought of your videos and sure enough he showed your AOA measurement video. Good stuff.
A really cool project! I always have issues with CG on my wings and scratch builds. Can never quite get it right causing the elevens to be at extreme angles or adding extra weight in the nose to balance it out which also makes it really heavy. Well done!!
Yea non-passive FBW platforms for efficiency and maneuverability otherwise unachievable with human reaction times is super fascinating. That’s not exactly what I did here but the plane was pretty unstable with out it hahaha
Wow, what a contrast from single channel pulse radios. I remember when the AC RC single channel jobbies with those flapping rudders was high tech. I still have my radio, I just wish I could find my receiver and actuators.
forgive me for my inability to possibly use the search function but I'm not sure if I've seen you explain exactly your method for balancing your planes. is there a resource you'd recommend, or a video you've made that would help with that?
Honestly cannot believe how good a 1306 did on that wing. My wing a little larger and I felt like an 1806 motor on 3s wasn't enough to get it moving and a 2205 on 4s was just barely cutting it.
Hey I was wondering if you could make a video for noobs like me on how to connect all the parts in your recommended parts in a plane such as how to use multiple servos on a radio receiver
Hi Samm. Im enjoying your channel, we'd get along well. I've got a question/suggestion/conversation starter. So why not add a second motor from the drone, just make it run in the opposite direction to the first, and obviously the prop would be the oposite orientation. Now, make both props a much deeper pitch. You would definitely fly faster, and the motors would balance the angular torque of each other, but would this not then give better efficiency due to the deeper pitch of the propellers... I'm keen to hear your opinion on this, I might make 1 for youtube some time....
What a cool project man! It was worth the wait! All those cute little micro sized parts made it all the better! Also congrats on a ten minute vid, (Don't tell anybody but I clicked the ads). And is 9:20 Spark footage? If so I enjoyed the audio filling you did with it.
Also did you switch to Premiere from fcpx? I always thought you used Final Cut although I might be wrong. Josue's flying is getting better and better too :)
Some variant of an SP Racing F3. Some come equipped with an accelerometer, barometer and compass. I usually get the ones with out all that because race quads don’t use them.
It'd be cool if you could add retractable landing gear to a flying wing. It would be perfect for ground takeoff instead of hand launching (although it might just add unneeded weight).
I think in this case it would be useless, the wing is tiny already so landing on grass would just tip it over lol. It can just land without hurting itself because its so light
Help w/ Transmitters? What is the most "User Friendly" Transmitter available? I don't mind spending a fair price for one that's easier to use? And which ones can be used w/ more Receivers? This industry needs help, mostly in "Sourced Code" it offers to buyers. Any ideas, feel free to help me out? peace & thanks for this video.
Nice and really simple build, which flies well too. You might want to swicth the propeller to a larger (but suitable considering the amps) 3-blade or even a 2-blade propeller, more thrust and speed and a better climb rate too :)
god damit! you slap some stuff together and it just fly's! me and a friend (both in second year of electronic engineer studies) have been tryin for 2 years to build a flying plane that flies half as stable as one of yours :'p
Sir. Could you send maybe some idea of measurement or some kind of plans that I could work with? Thank you kindly! I will even pay if you like. Kind Regards.
I like the fact that you've carried around extra goggles so that you can get kids into the Hobby and for that I'm going to subscribe not all Heroes where capes but they do wear goggles😂 rip brother just read the comments😢😢😢😢😢
Samm literally just winged it. Grab some foam board, pause the video on a frame where you can see the wing he built, and sketch it out on your foam. He inspired me to do the same.
Hey Samm, you look like you would like the FT Arrow from Flite Test. That is also a mini race wing. Its gots some cool little features that would be cool to emulate on your custom platform.
Samm I have a question. I'm looking to get into FPV but I hear that you need a HAM technicians license to legally fly FPV in the United States. Do you have a HAM license? If so, what was the process of getting one like? Thx!
I have my ham ticket. It's free to study, usually $15 to take the test. Required for legal fpv unless you go digital or buy certified analog transmitter.

Love the way you carve through all the crap and make your stuff. no BS. It's inspirational and I love showing the G/Kids your projects.
Samm, thank you for being a huge inspiration. I am building my first RC plane from scratch right now and its mostly because of your videos :)
This comment really moves me now, he wad really an inspiration fir every one
Rest in peace Sam
Well this is a little past due by now but here ya go. Let's make more
Samm Sheperd I thought you died
Thank you for finally returning! Your videos are awesome keep up the great work!
you should make a Horten Ho 229 air plane would be sick
Do your balls hang low?
Samm Sheperd Hey I’m really really interested in building something like this. Could you please link the plans in the description??
This is the coolest thing i have seen in a while on youtube
I mean. Here i am wanting to build a wing just to have a second plane. And I see you. Literally making one out of materials from the dollar tree. Hats off to you. Great job!
Goat at 8:47. Sorry for not writing something intelligent and insightful.
Hahah Josue’s laugh was so funny
Goats are great :)
Ps we miss you sam
Goats are great :)
Ps we miss you sam
HAHAHA I came down to the comments because I heard that laugh
"Look, I can make it beep. That's cool right?" 😁
Finally somebody thinks it’s funny!
Gavin Remme. After I crashed my Opterra doing night FPV, I got a video of it in the middle of the snowy field. I was glad I could still make it beep and flash.
Gavin! Has anyone seen Gavin?
Matthew Ross Gavin!
God bless your family and I pray you’re out there somewhere still flying and thinking and creating. Gone FAR too soon, to be sure.
I wish he was still able to make creations like this, love comments that are good and teach us all about aerodynamics and how the plane works and just make more planes 😔
Been procrastinating fixing my quad up and Samm pops up outta know where to re-inspire me. Missed you dude!
The footage at 9:22 looks like it’s from a Dji or similar drone, also, super excited for more videos!!
RIP Samm💚💜
Very nice, Sam! I now have something to do this winter break
Excellent Samm. I just love your videos. Each project has a new & innovative element. Keep posting more buddy..
is it possible to build a flying wing aerodynamically stable enough so it won't require a controller?
Dennis Bautembach Sorry man Samm past away last year sadly he wont Beable to respond
Yes it is bro... Check out the engineered mini wing video from samm

Thanks!
I wish he could answer you... But he won't... So bad
dude, you made building a wing look so easy!
Rest In Peace. Genius Kid.
Hi Sam. I must say, your videos are very impressive and inspiring. Had a question but it was answered in the video details. Keep up the awesome work!
Yaaaaaay Sam Shepard is back
Samm, I am never not impressed by you. :) So glad to see you posting videos, again! :D
Omg I forgot how much I love your videos! You're the one that got me into RC stuff to begin with. I need more!!
fly high samm,rest in peace.
Im very new to rc planes. I do have reasonable knowledge on subsonic aerodynamics and im a computer programmer by trade. So, those 2 elements are not an issue.

Use dji naza flight control board I guess it has more config than quadrotors...
Wow, fantastic! Some questions: a bec wouldn't be enough for powering the servos? And what about the setup in that software?
MC's Creations A bec should be better than a linear regulator for efficiency and power but worst for noise.
dar0 Maybe. There are becs specific for fpv.
You could totally make a BEC work, I was probably just too rushed to think of it and try one. I had the regulator available in a local store
Samm Sheperd Nice! Thanks! :D

so glad your still alive
You must be my 3.4% female audience
Jana Miller I hope you heard Jana. I’m sure you have.

sad life

I know samm past away.. But when you turn the left wing how do the right wing going up if the left is going down?
A really cool project! I always have issues with CG on my wings and scratch builds. Can never quite get it right causing the elevens to be at extreme angles or adding extra weight in the nose to balance it out which also makes it really heavy. Well done!!
9:09 is og loc your friend?
what ??? Sam 2018 that is not good such a brilliant young guy.
Should try moving the CofM backwards and see whether the FBW will work when it's passively unstable.
Yea non-passive FBW platforms for efficiency and maneuverability otherwise unachievable with human reaction times is super fascinating. That’s not exactly what I did here but the plane was pretty unstable with out it hahaha
What kind of flight times do you get with this setup? Just glancing in the video, it looks like you got at least 5:00.
10 min is pretty easy actually
Great little wing man. Nice maiden.
The "out of the box" experience is a 5v BEC?
Wow, what a contrast from single channel pulse radios. I remember when the AC RC single channel jobbies with those flapping rudders was high tech. I still have my radio, I just wish I could find my receiver and actuators.
Could you try the runcam OWl and do some night testing?
Another great video matey. I can't wait to have a go myself at something similar.
You were a genius.
That looks awesome. What was your battery life like?
you sir are awesome, and your builds are just as awesome
That i s so cool, like ur m8 asking if they wanna watch,
love the fpv from the quad behind the plane.
Great Video
Need more quad following fixed wing, that was awesome
As I said on insta so nice to see you again
Me too can’t wait. Keep up the good work
Looks very stable for a small wing !
Where can I find the 2D drawing please ?
Fosch Unfortunately, Samm passed away a few months ago in a motorcycle accident. See his latest video as a tribute. Rest In Peace.
Did you plan to have this plane balanced a certain way before cutting it out?
Not really. I tried balancing with the components afterwards
forgive me for my inability to possibly use the search function but I'm not sure if I've seen you explain exactly your method for balancing your planes. is there a resource you'd recommend, or a video you've made that would help with that?
good stuff sir
This... is amazing. Thank you, Samm.
Fantastic 😀😉
Infelizmente ele faleceu... 😕
hey what type of plane would you recommend a beginner? 3ch (elevator + rudder) or just get started with a straight 4ch plane
Leafeon grab a small EPO foam 3 channel trainer if you can
Now make one with like an 800mw VTX and crossfire, and do some long range!
Thank you so much for this. I'll use one of my busted 4in1 esc's. Will just need another 5v BEC for the servo.
Honestly cannot believe how good a 1306 did on that wing. My wing a little larger and I felt like an 1806 motor on 3s wasn't enough to get it moving and a 2205 on 4s was just barely cutting it.
How was the footage taken at 9:20 it looks amazing
Mavic pro
awwww yesssssssssssssss, FINALLY !!! please keep em coming
Can i use a low esr cap on the power lead to reduce noise instead of that 5 v regulator?

That thing sounds like an EDF!
All rc planes are fbw though?
What a cool project man! It was worth the wait!
All those cute little micro sized parts made it all the better! Also congrats on a ten minute vid, (Don't tell anybody but I clicked the ads).
And is 9:20 Spark footage? If so I enjoyed the audio filling you did with it.
Oh I didn’t do 10 min on purpose I forgot that’s a thing. Thanks tho. The footage was from a mavic
Also did you switch to Premiere from fcpx? I always thought you used Final Cut although I might be wrong. Josue's flying is getting better and better too :)
How much does it weigh?
Add rudders and its a lot better control. Flying wing at Tower Hobbies for 37:00
Nice work . . . . Which flight control you have used ?
Some variant of an SP Racing F3. Some come equipped with an accelerometer, barometer and compass. I usually get the ones with out all that because race quads don’t use them.
Thanks for reply . . .
flat pieces of foam or you used an aero foil as well?
I guess the flat pieces of foam kind of form a “KF airfoil” but no it’s pretty much a flat plate wing
You're back!
Love your videos!

How long does the battery last for one flight on full charge?
You can probably get away from the separate regulator if you use the cheaper analogue servos. They make a lot less noise.
It’s really helpful to have fast accurate servos when controlled by a flight controller
god damit! you slap some stuff together and it just fly's! me and a friend (both in second year of electronic engineer studies) have been tryin for 2 years to build a flying plane that flies half as stable as one of yours :'p
One of my favorites ever!! Awesome!
Great video with custom wing. After having my first inav wing with gps my quads dont get used any more.
Sam, can you please post the design of the frame? Kind of like Flitetest guys do
Why is flying this thing so well? =D
I build many many deltas and cut the wings with my hotwire, but never get one flying so well :(
It flew pretty bad with out the flight controller.
New video! Nice! :D Missed your videos A LOT!
Wow that's been in the works for a while! lol
Nah it was just on my hard drive not being worked on for a while. Thanks for filming BTW
We miss you sam
Sir. Could you send maybe some idea of measurement or some kind of plans that I could work with? Thank you kindly! I will even pay if you like. Kind Regards.
Sorry, but he won't even reply you. I really wish he could, but not anymore....he died
The cinematography really took a step up with shots like 9:21 !
It’s a good shot but it had no audio. I’m proud of the little sound design I added to make it feel full.
Didn't even notice, the audio felt very natural.
Glad you're back! The idea of a tiny wing is still fun to think about. What kind of flight time were you getting from this?
It’s not exactly designed for efficiency, just screaming fun. But I was getting about 10 min
Hi, It is more suitable to use ceramic capacitors with 7805. Ceramic ones have better frequency response, so they will suppress more noise.
Thanks! I think you’re right
can i make a frame with rasin or plaxiglass?...i want a really strong frame what can absorb any direct hit
That would probably make it too heavy...
@@juliussalovaara9787 maybe😣😣😣😣😣😣😣

Was waiting for a video for ever
good to see you back!! :D
This is so cool!!! I have to try this too!
Plans for the wing available somewhere?
Samm literally just winged it. Grab some foam board, pause the video on a frame where you can see the wing he built, and sketch it out on your foam. He inspired me to do the same.
