I’ve listened to this song about 30 times today and I’m not done.
Every so often I hear one of Sly’s songs after some years and it hits me differently and I notice a new angle and im enjoying his infectious genius and in awe of his talent again.
Dude’s songs are SO unique. Funky, Bluesy, and soulful, but above all, the FUN he has making his music colors every note, every beat, every word and it feels its coming from a huge smile
He’s a special composer. The direction he went with forming his band, combining so many distinct sounds and presenting them together like they’ve always been family, and the risks he took with songs that always paid off and made him revered and timeless.
So glad to have his music. It has brightened countless hours of my life, and I think he’d say that’s what it’s all about.

This is an all-time masterpiece, the way the start is like all these hazy, loose elements gathering themselves into a rythm, and then you get these three incredibly memorable melodies (Sly & the twin horn and keyboard lines) not interfering with each other, perfectly adding to what one another is doing? The mixing is perfect as well, the bass punchy at the front carrying the song and the horns restrained and giving just enough without rising above the other sounds. The vocal DELIVERY as well... genius, genius, genius.

Valentine's Day 1970, Madison Sq. Garden: Fleetwood Mac, Grand Funk Railroad, Richard Pryor (doing standup) and headliner Sly & the Family Stone. This was about six months after Woodstock, where Sly (along with Santana) brought the house down. They did it again this night at the Garden: Dance to the Music, Everyday People, Sing a Simple Song, Thank You (Falettin' Me Be Myself), Hot Fun in the Summertime, M'Lady, Wanna Take You Higher, Stand...they did everything and nearly blew the Garden's roof off...unforgettable. If You Want Me to Stay is less well known but 10/10 on the funky scale...

Since I come from that time (60's), just to let you know, James Brown (Godfather of Soul) and George Clinton (Godfather of Clone Funk, P-Funk) were already on the scene. Sly brought in a whole new funky sound, however, adding rock to r&b, becoming the Master of this genre of Funk, straight from California. With a Diverse band, Diverse sound and Diverse LOOK. They were mod, wore funky clothes, were colorful to look at as well as listen to. We were never the same afterwards. He brought everyone together, black, white, red, polka-dot, WHATEVER!! Was so much fun, would I love to go back there again? Better believe it..

    • @3YZ-TS191
      @3YZ-TS191 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Just as an fyi, James is dubbed “The godfather of soul.” And yes, he indeed was. But he was also the godfather of funk, in spite of that title never being attributed to him (so much for classical labeling!). James delivered funk as early as the 60s; groups like Sly and P-Funk borrowed the style, which became popular in the early 70s when these groups were flying high. Recognize, now….

Ok, things I only noticed today:
At 2:30 there’s the sound of a telephone’s dial tone.
It goes “Booooop Boop” and then it’s gone. Wild.
Landline, obviously, but that sound meant the line is working, but not connected to another phone at this time.
Also, I’m in love with the scat he does at 2:36 is so awesome.
He just did whatever and it was perfect. He’s totally at play. The different voices he sings with, the freestyle piano, it all seems like he just laughed his way through the recording session, but…
That dial tone is a clue to his attention to detail, the clarity of the song in his mind, and his insistence to get that tone into the song, although it’s barely audible.
It makes it more amazing that it comes across as a playful free style.
It shows his absolute command of his craft.
To have that kind of attention to detail, and a vision complete enough to demand a dial tone be subtly inserted one time near the end of a song, and make it feel like he smiled and winked through the whole recording is kinda his style.
One of my favorite artists. Just unexplainably awesome.
    Fking Sly, man. 🙏🏻
