The main point the speaker is making here is that it IS common so they find it surprising that it is not more well-known medically (and we can infer that they think it should be more well known and as a result, more accurately diagnosed - instead of "commonly misdiagnosed as simple nodules or abscesses"). The speaker mentions that many patients think they have acne but there is no mention of incorrect treatment as a result of this.
