James Horner was such an incredible film composer. His music was a large part of my childhood. God rest him.

Takes a lot of people to make a motion picture. But the composer is one of the most important of all. And everybody knows it.

"Braveheart" (1995), focuses on the Scottish rebel William Wallace and his attempts to free Scotland from England and King Edward's cruel reign. Directed and starring Mel Gibson, the movie not only won five Academy Awards, including best picture, it also belongs to one of the greatest movies out there.
The musical score was composed by no less than James Horner. Listening to the music throughout the movie, one wonders how he could have not won an Oscar, though being nominated. "Braveheart" contains many of his big orchestral trademarks, including orchestrations that definitely would inspire his music for "Titanic" (1997) and certainly belongs to the greatest achievements of his career. Enjoy!

Personally, I think he should've won for either this or "Apollo 13". Maybe the Academy voters were split between both so much that "Il Postino" ended up getting more votes than both scores. It's a wild guess.

The body of work Mr James Horner composed , speaks for itself , he was a miracle composing for movies like Titanic , Braveheart , Apollo 13 , Avatar , a Beautiful Mind and many more. He was gifted but in Hollywood regarded as a nice man not egotistical , he left way too soon, he had so much more to do. But he left a legacy of gorgeous music that will live on for generations to come , thank you Mr Horner for such beautiful music snd for being the man you were. RIP you are deeply missed, still.

Lovely score. You did well condensing it down to just 20 minutes. This and Apollo 13 are some of James Horner's best work. Thanks Fred.

He could be one of the laziest composers, stealing and recycling music by himself and others throughout his career.
But, when he wasn't, he composed scores which put himself in the front ranks of populist composers. I recently watched two of the earliest films he scored - "The Wrath of Khan" and Douglas Trumbull's "Brainstorm." Horner was genuinely gifted. Even in minor films like "Krull" he does what the great film composers do: he makes the film better.

I’m not sure that any of my words could do justice to this beautiful score so I will just leave some ❤❤❤❤.

Hi, Fred!! Although he was very popular among his peers for his friendliness, Jimmy Horner was constantly criticized ( particularly Kevin Howard and David J. Rimmer ), who questioned his talent. Complete nonsense. Since his work in " Brainstorm ", still in the beginning of his career ( 1983 ), looked like of an experienced composer. " Braveheart " is one of his best scores, in which he uses old instruments of folk music ( like quechua, piobh uillean and bodhran ) together with the orchestra. Even so, the traditional instruments stands out: the strings and wind sections in " Sons of Scotland ", " The Battle of Stirling " and " Freedom " are masterful, between placid and operatic. There is also another quality: Horner brings the placidity and beauty of the music, softening the exhibitionisms of violence, much appreciated by director Gibson. If we didn't already know the Academy's inability, especially in " Best Original Score " category, perhaps it seems unbelievable that it has let this opportunity pass to, 2 years later, award Horner for the score tiresome, repesynths, clogged with synths ( in the wrong places ) and overwhelmed by Celine Dion's deafening and sticky intervention in " Titanic "!!!! A bureaucratic award that definitely didn't match the immense talent of Horner!! Thanks again, Fred, and nice weekend!!!

Sorry, Fred: " repetitive ". I wrote " repesynths ". Tiredness and disturbance ( people talking behind me )...What a pain!!! Sorry again...

Thank you Fred for sharing this soundtrack. Reminds me of an english colleague who told me how he went to a cinema in Scotland to watch the movie and felt a little ... unconfortable ( I guess it was as well to justify the pints he had to swallow to drown the emotional shock ! :-)

Leave it to Fred to bring out the essence of this epic, classic score in only 20 minutes (any shorter wouldn't do it justice).

    Grandissimo James Horner!👏🏻😍

Entertaining movie, the score served it well, but this is not great music. Horner's skills were much more on display in Wrath of Khan and Brainstorm, even Titanic, as others have noted. Honestly, how much wandering strings, horns calls and distant bass drum whacks can one pack into a score? Big, romantic, but more atmospheric than melodic with little that distinguishes it from dozens of like-sounding soundtracks. The use of folk instruments over a layer of orchestral sound is appropriate but hardly original. Not all film music is very interesting outside the film it was written to support. But so what? That's its first and only job. In its context it does the job.

i agree -- though beautifully structured and executed, and having many exquisite moments and carefully selected sound combinations, there's also that sprawl you describe perfectly, and for the most part the effect for me is rather of something ladled on and unspecial. most of all, for me, unlike a score like Glory or Field of Dreams, or even Apollo 13, i can't imagine the film being much different without it. the score is perfectly appropriate if overabundant, in a few moments very sensitively complementary, emphasizing character connections that might otherwise feel a bit introverted -- but not much more than that. i confess that a big part of the problem for me is that i don't really like the film.
