  • It is time to treat for mites but it is too hot to use my "go to" treatment Formic Pro. Here is what I do and why.

    A tub of Apiguard cost comparison might be interesting.
    When Medhat Nasr anpounced version 3, most of us threw in the towel. Looking forward to your mite counts Peter.

      Cost wise Apiguard is great, suitability and timing re honeysupers and temperature is why I no longer use it.

    "Each of these strips works out to 4 - 5 dollars apiece", MannLake sells the bulk pack for $2.17 per strip.

      Most of those watching are hobbiests who can not justify buying in bulk or who buy from local supply stores where prices are higher but advice is free.

    Thanks for the video, Peter. It’s always helpful to see somebody else do a process step-by-step before doing it ourselves. Can I ask how much space do you have between each quad of hives? I am curious more specifically from one beehive entrance to the next beehive how much space do you have?

      I'm glad it was helpful. I do not have a set distance. Normally it would be enough room to safely negociate the area whilst carrying heavy supers! Lets say 3' or more.

    have you tried using icing sugar as a treatment ? - We're in Wiltshire UK and have a low mite counts currently in ourr urban hives - have been doing this weekly since 1st week of May

    • @BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer

      Regular dusting with icing sugar (powdered sugar) can increase the loss of mites from the hive due to increased goooming, as a result it slows down the build-up of mites BUT it is not a reliable long term mite treatment. By all means use it as part of an integrated pest management strategy but it is VERY low on the list of non chemical mite control options.

    Peter, maybe I missed it but did you do a mite count? I’ve read that with Hop Guard you have to treat all the hives in the apiary.

    First youtuber I seen to use hop guard. What the average over oxalic acid seeing it doesnt penetrat the sealed brood ?

    • @BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer
      @BeekeepingwithTheBeeWhisperer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is my second choice to Formic Pro but better than no treatment. OA would need to be applied many times over three weeks to achieve something similar and I do not have that much time to visit every hive multiple times, twice is bad enough!

    Single brood management central Indiana. When does one start thinking about taking all supers off. And leaving one brood chamber for winter?

      Yes

      The manufacturer says yes. Kinda like the manufacturer of the recent vaccine said it was safe and effective. I'm going to use it this year, but, I don't plan on taking any honey off of my new hives.
