I'm confused as to how these work. where does the ballast go ? .is it on the vehicle and cleaned then re applied or replace?

moebius The wagons at the front are empty so the machines in the middle of the train can excavate unusable ballast and send it to the empty wagons via conveyors at the front of the train, new ballast is then fed to the machines via from the back of the train and replaces where the old ballast was

cheers for the info . I find these machines fascinating and could watch it for hours ,yeah sad I know lol . I have seen rakes of them being taken through sections of track on there way to jobs but never seen one in action in the real as it were .

moebius I enjoy watching track machines too, the only problem with the HOBC is it usually works at night so if you do get the chance to see it in daylight go for it, yes it might be very early in the morning but worth getting up for

there seem to be quite a few of these Middlesboro and teeside in general .I only live about 18 miles away from the area .plenty of cl66 and 57 action .some places where you can get close are getting to be harder to get to due to health a safety I guess . working through the night is only natural as its way too busy during the day light hours . ill keep a look out cheers

Correct but most of the time, they wont use new ballast if the old ballast is good enough. Basically they will excavate the old ballast, feed it to the front where it is cleaned and recycled, and feed it back around into the back where it is put back in behind the cutter bar.
