Dan was my Uncle and was such a genuine and noble man. I can remember catching him on the Weather Channel and running to tell my Mom that he was on TV!! Miss him dearly!
@@dukedawgk holy cow! Small world! He really was an outstanding person in all respects. It's very rare to have someone in your life that never lost their temper on you. I aspire to be more like him. The Weather Channel has been an abject dumpster fire ever since the company was acquired by NBCUniversal… What’s left of TWC isn’t even a shell of its former self, and operates as an [in-name-only] business. The ~15-year regression has been agonizing to watch for millions of Americans. What was once a trailblazing weather media-public service hybrid enterprise is now a cable television zombie. From real OG to reality TV, the story of The Weather Channel is in its final chapter, and it’s such an agonizing tragedy.
The weather channel in the 90s and early 2000s were the BEST! I remember as a kid watching this in our Florida vacation hotel on Daytona Beach..drove down from NYC in a rented minivan.. ahh.. the good ole days.
At around 2:20 pm on that day, the organizers of the West Indian American Day Parade ended the parade early due to approaching severe weather. The parade was set to end at around 4:00 pm.
@@ryanhilliard1620 Oh I stopped watching TWC religiously after IBM took over and killed the channel for good. I Hardly ever watch it now. I don't have cable anymore, but when some places we go to have it, I just usually put it on for background noise.

You know it's amazing because I can recall a lot of major weather events that occurred in 1998. I vaguely remember this event and that's because we had a lot going on here with our summer storm season here in the Southwest. Great video thank you for posting!
@Nunya Bizness Yes 1998 was a weird year! I'll never forget a severe thunderstorm event we had here in Las Vegas that produced golf ball sized hail, and a weak tornado! And then in December, we had an unusual snowstorm here!
I remember this night, this was the week I started high school, me, my mother and grandmother was still up, my brother and other family members was sleep, we lived with my grandparents, this thunderstorm ☈ was bad with a lot of lightning, thunder and wind. I was scared because I was very scared of lightning 🌩 and thunder.
The TCF scroll was really from the national feed of TWC and not from the local cable system's WeatherSTAR 4000 unit. TWC used to have a national 4000 that had the looping TCF scroll up until at some point around as late as early 1999 or so (shortly before when the WeatherSTAR XL was introduced).
I know it's been a while since you've uploaded, but are you in any position to upload anything new at some point? Because back in 2007, I found images on Yahoo! search of WeatherSTAR XLs from New York and Syracuse at least November 2001 thru at least March 30, 2002 (maybe some others) that I know are from you. Do you still have those in videos to upload?
Dan Atkinson was my grandpa! He passed away recently, but I'm glad I found this video of him while he was doing what he did best.
Yes he definitely one of the "Great" original meteorologist from The Weather Channel. I was in grade school when this aired!!!
My condolences.

I miss this era of TWC. Straight to the point. TWC nowadays have too many shows and not enough weather coverage.
