    Glad that green sand is this simple. I live in the country and our local hardware store has powder bentonite in 40 lb. bags, so that should be simple enough. They actually mine it in the black hills about 100 miles from where I live and train cars of it go by every week. I believe that back in the 80's several bentonite cars derailed at our neighbors and they just dug a hole and berried it.

    1: You can find #5 bags of bentonite powder on ebay for around $25, and many sellers don't charge shipping either. 2: Green sand is made with oil, not water. Reason being: water will without fail evaporate, leaving your sand a useless solid mass until you bust it up, mull it again and rehydrate it. Even in a sealed bucket, the sand will still evaporate. Oil keeps the sand at a set consistency and will not evaporate which prevents many hours of work at a future date. Oh and green sand will cast any metal that you can melt.

      I can’t believe no one has corrected your comment. Green sand is made with water sand and clay. Oil bonded sand is not green sand.

      Why? The ones who control everything are the corporates, law-makers and the military; not people like him. He may be part of the future, but he is not an influential part of that future; a future that still has no hope because of the aforementioned groups.

    I made green sand for my casts, bought the bentonite in a 10lbs bag on Amazon. Still had to strain the play sand I used but no grinding. Need me a stir stick like that!

    idk if anyone knows this but if you take the kitty liter and just mix water with it and let it sit after you squish it around for awhile the clay will mix in the water than you can just pour the clay water mix into your sand instead worked for me

      Why are you fanatics so obsessed with the like/dislike ratio? Do you think that everyone needs to think the same and be devoid of any personal opinion? TH-cam put that dislike button there for a reason, so people can cast their vote. If you can't handle that fact, move to China.

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +marko Helenin wax and oil boils just as easily at this temperature. Sand is porous so the steam and gases can escape through it

      Okey! In Finland we have red "green sand" it has some high temp silicon based oil that doesn't burn, Cool vid, another use for my cats bentonite, heh..

    is the green sand reusable and if so how many times can you reusable it?

    • @markfryer9880
      @markfryer9880 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sort of a "how long is a piece of string" question, but if you keep the sand free of metal slag and dross, add a bit more water each time and the occasional amount of clay then the life span is almost limitless.

  • @IntegraDIY

    Maybe if you add 2 1/2lbs or 3lbs of clay you can pack the molds tighter, to lesson the texture of the sand? The molds would come out smoother maybe?

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Integra DIY yes, you could. However then It is not a porous so the gases can't escape as easily. You especially need places for gases to escape when doing lost foam method.

    J whats the green sand used for?

    • @markfryer9880
      @markfryer9880 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For "Green sand" casting, you pack it into a flask around a pattern, split the mold, remove the pattern, reassemble the flask, then pour molten metal into it to create a metal replica of your pattern.

    Instead of milling/grinding the clay, why not just add water and mix it in with the sand....

    • @makerj101
      @makerj101 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +IMAKE I did try that. You have to add a lot of water and the clay just kinda stays in clumps. If you had a sand muller that would probably work.
