I just wish I could wear long sleeves etc when gardening but it’s just so darn humid here it’s not possible. So instead , I dip in the pool 💦 and then with a wet bathing suit to cool me down, I plant a big umbrella ☂ that I move around with me as I weed. Even that is not enuf when the temp goes above 90. Cloudy days are more bearable but then there’s the pesky mosquitoes! 🦟

I am a 66-year-old gardener here in north-east Oregon, right near the Washington border. Even though I’ve gardened (at least a small area) for years. But I really don’t know what I’m doing. It’s all trial and error (mostly error). My hardest lesson learned is the location each different plant needs. I’ve wasted so much money over the years on perennials that I’ve put in wrong places. To the point that I’ve gotten very discouraged. For the first time ever, I did not plant a garden last year. Then I found your channel last winter (22-23). I want to thank you for all the inspiration. I couldn’t wait for Spring. I’ve got a nice, little garden this year, thanks to you. This past Spring, I was reunited with a couple of high school friends. One is a gardener so after catching up on the past forty plus years, I asked her if she had ever watched your channel. Her response was “I’ve been watching her channel since the beginning, before she even had any kids”. I feel sad that I missed out on over forty years of friendship with her and many years of watching your channel. But currently, I am so thankful for her friendship and you and Erin’s solid advice. My husband knows that every evening we have to look to see if you have a new video posted. He graciously watches each one with me. In our younger years, we had a booming, lawn care service. He had gone to Walla Walla Community College for their two-year, Turf Management Course then afterwards we started our business. So he is always interested in Erin’s input about your lawn and it’s care. My husband can be pretty critical about other people’s lawns. But he always praises Erin and all his explanations, saying “he sure knows what he is doing, doesn’t he”. I didn’t mean to write this much, I’ve considered commenting prior, but I don’t really have time for much social media so haven’t got in the habit of commenting on things I like. I’ve so enjoyed watching your family and enjoy seeing all the changes to your property, and the new property and your new, new property (lol).
God bless your family. You are such an inspiration to so many people. God has used you and your family in such a big way. You are certainly an answer to my prayers. I hope your channel is still going years from now.

For the love of Pete, why would anyone get upset over how Laura wears her hair or how she dresses to work outside? If it doesn't bother her, then no one else should be bothered by it. I watch GA videos to learn about how to plant different things at different times of the year, fertilizing the plants/trees, watching Laura get excited over how a plant /tree is growing in the gardens, seeing Benjamin and Samantha Grace playing in the dirt or helping plant a flower in the garden, picking strawberries and eating them right off the plant, seeing Aaron's beautiful grass, watching as you guys go to different places and plant up beds for your community, watching a video of Laura, her mom,and Monica going antique shopping, or just watching Laura arrange a bouquet of flowers. I start my day with a GA video and love it when I see a video on Instagram with music added to it.😊

The wall was about 15 feet long, built to look like a partially fallen old wall with vines growing on part of it. It was wonderful!

One suggestion I would make is for you to add consulting a county extension office when folks are having difficulty idenitfying an issue/plant/pest or what to do about the issue/plant/pest. I think local garden centers are chock full of great advice but county extension offices also offer science-based advice and solutions.

I am limited by age, ability, and budget, but have been able to develop our garden in a new growing zone based on what Laura has shared. Just gdding biotone, and planttone, with the mulch given by our city, has improved out flower beds immensely. Now my husband has mastered composting, we have that to add in, and were able to do raised beds for vegetables.

Composting is so significant ..... let it rot..... it will take longer without moisture but you have that big tank that you use to fertilize that you could just use the water for the pile..... also Xeriscaping would be tremendous for those in areas like yours that are dry and people who don’t have access to well water. Your areas are gorgeous but adding in some alternative ideas in some test areas on that new acreage would be well received I think. I would LOVE to find garden centers who have people who know plants.... most here in Indiana are clerks who are clueless! 🥴🥴

It took me a couple of days to see this recap but life gets in the way. I TOTALLY love your channel and have been watching since you bought the house. We are a military family and have lived in so many different zones. What led me to you was I was looking for guidance when trimming. What kept me coming back is that you have a pleasant disposition and have a way of making gardening fun and not so strict. My husband doesn’t see all of your videos but does hear some from time to time and he likes to hear and see the interaction you have with Aaron and your mom. We love that you brighten up areas in your community too. Recently he figured out you have other family members that you help out too. 🤭He says it’s refreshing to see that dynamic and I have to agree. You and this channel are part of my morning routine. I worked in a garden center for several years and you are right about sooo much fun when a customer wants to learn about what they are buying and is able to afford to really landscape with abandon! Those customers are always balanced by the ones who don't want to have to do anything to care for a plant (no maintenance) and have it bloom from March until December - Ugh!

We have a man that does the same thing with a tractor trailer (small one.) He goes to Horse Show‘s and basically guts the inside middle part and then we all shop from the walls in the trailer and then we can shop the piles of horse supplies outside. It’s always one of the highlights of my trips to different horse shows! Speaking of leaving that place. I can’t imagine Laura leaving the Hartley. But then again, you could always have another one built somewhere else.

    Laura and Aaron,
I think you don’t get many hate comments partly because you’re both so lovely and positive and, yes, you avoid overt statements about controversial matters. Also, your community is generally sweet and positive, so they attract more sweet and positive people to it. But also, and you didn’t mention this, you’re not part of groups who, unfortunately, sometimes get hateful comments from bigots-you’re white, apparently heterosexual, physically attractive, able-bodied, not Jewish or Muslim, etc. I think it’s important to remember that some hate comments will come to some people no matter how they act. ❤️

I appreciate that your content is drama free and I realized that the consistency with your hair/clothes/setting is calming and keeps the focus on gardening. Although, I was planting today in a swimsuit and shorts, while it was cloudy and sprinkling and still got lightheaded from the FL heat and humidity! We have reached the point of the summer where we just throw seeds out and hope they grow.

To add to the question about the male and female ginkgo, male varieties are preferred because they do not produce fruit so they are neater but also the fruit of the females has a rancid smell! For some reason when they planted gingkos along one of the streets in my hometown they did not consider these issues so the street is lined with female gingkos so not only do we have messy fruit on the sidewalks and cars that park in that area, there is the smell to deal with as well.

I wear long sleeve T-shirts or breathable shirts and jeans when I work in the garden. I also have to wear a hat with a mosquito net over it to keep the gnats out of my face. I live in Southeast Alabama and the humidity is around 75% most of the time. I also wear compression socks because I'm an old 66 year old lady and it keeps the bugs away from my ankles. But wearing black is a no go in this area. The mosquitoes love black as well as a number of other bugs plus it makes it much hotter. Light gray is as dark as I go. I love all the plants you plant but have to find things that can survive our growing zone 8. You have inspired me to plan several garden beds around our 3 acre lot. I have filled most of the back yard with raised beds for vegetable growing. I recently reworked the drip irrigation in my raised beds inspired by the lines you put in your mothers new raised beds. Thank you for all the ideas and hard work.

Normal, clean rainwater tends acidic, pH 5 - 5.5, depending on what is in the air it falls through. For example, it is 5.6 - 5.8 in Hawaii while in New York state it is 4.8 - 5.3. Prior to the Clean Air Act the average pH of New England and Mid-Atlantic states was 4.1 to 4.4.

I see an opportunity with your birch bunch on the path- I would buy 3 more birch trees and make another cluster of 3, with the 2 you have already planted off to the side. That way, you could balance the loop in the path and have a little mini birch grove of 5 trees 😍

Sunscreen! We have 90% humidity today and I must admit, my hair is up and my shirt is sleeveless. I wear mostly light cotton capris in summer. July and August kill me (and my poor garden suffers.) I've noticed areas with dry heat tend to cover up and more humid areas tend to cover up less. So any way, Sunscreen for me!!! Love your videos, love your hair down, I think your basic black is sensible and attractive. I am always amazed how put together you look when you are tending the garden. Me, well, let's just say I tend to avoid small children as not to traumatize anyone, LOL Have a beautiful day!
