    Notice that the cars in the animation are all failing to stop before the pedestrian crosswalks. Clearly pedestrians aren't meant to be part of this type of interchange even though they must be accommodated.

      With that much traffic someone has to wait a bit unless you build tons of bridges for every direction.

      but there is more buffer zones in this design , which still results in a much higher CPS flow per lane distribution. Then there is the bonus of having only 2 signal phases which only adds to the CPS flow, Lo0o0oL

    Well, it sounded crazy at first, but it does seem to be working! I've not tried it at rush hour yet, but the times I've used it it seemed to work well. Now they are talking about another one at Peachtree Industrial and I-285.

  • @EclecticHillbilly
    @EclecticHillbilly 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The roundabouts in my area don't work because the diameter of them is far too small. You're having to try to look in two directions at once (both the roundabout and the lane coming in next to you) to try to see if it's clear. If they were bigger, they might work.

    This may eliminate awkward left turn signals but it requires all traffic on and entering the secondary road to stop at least once. That's a lot of stopped traffic.

  • @fjgriffingmail
    @fjgriffingmail 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    As I see it, if you're going either north or south on Ash-Dun, you cross into the left lane to cross 285, then back into the right lane. Can an entire group of engineers have an acid flashback at the same time?

  • @tollboothjason
    @tollboothjason 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Springfield, Missouri already has one of these things at the intersection of I-44 and state highway 13.
    BTW, the signal timing in this video seems a bit off. There's a good five seconds of time lost between light changes. Simple tweaking could fix that, however. Plus, this is just a demo video.

    I used to work and go to school in this area. This could work but they will need to address all of the traffic coming from Perimeter Mall and the Perimeter Center area as well. Its a zoo in that area during rush hour.

  • @mperloe

    Looks to me like the traffic exiting will back up to 285 unless they are given a lane where they can continue to move, ie the yellow cars.

  • @dilbertdoe601
    @dilbertdoe601 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like going back and reading all the comments from idiots saying it wouldn't work. It's working great! Traffic is moving smoothly and accidents in that area are down 30 percent.

  • @anderra88
    @anderra88 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok, you have three lanes merging into one entering WB 285 where you will have 285 vehicles merging right into that lane to exit P'Tree Dunwoody, and have to merge left one lane for 400 or two lanes to continue on 285. Entering EB 285 From Ashford Dunwoody NB you have the outer lane merging with SB Ashford vehicles.
    See a lot of wrecks happening. Every Atlantan knows 285 traffic moves maybe 5 mph durning rush hour here. A type personalities will also run lights and block veh's crossing over.

    Remember when that bus fell off I-75 because the signage was confusing? Be ready for a number of head-on collisions, especially from people who enter the interchange on the right, and think they are supposed to stay on the right side of the road. And how many dinner establishments in this area serve alcohol to those drivers?

    • @Xener09
      @Xener09 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's supposed to work that way, that was the intended function from the diverging diamonds original designer. It's been botched by idiots who can't lane math

    • @Xener09
      @Xener09 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Livereater Ohhh you mean that would be worse than coming to a complete stop???
      That makes zero sense, the highway ramps get backed up due to this oversight. The original designer of this interchange made it so that all exits should free-flow into the overpass with only 2 lights that each have a single cycle. This interchange has 6 lights... completely destroyed the purpose of the design.

    There will still be 100+ cars every day that accidentally end up in the Lake Hearn lane when they meant to turn onto Ashford Dunwoody southbound. They will then do an illegal U-turn and travel the wrong way on a one-way street to get BACK onto Ashford Dunwoody. Is there a solution to this in the new design that the model doesn't show?

  • @cwjmkj
    @cwjmkj 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quite unusual to see traffic flowing on the left side of the bridge, but perhaps it could work.

    the lake hearn portion of the interchange looks unaltered. i don't know.... this might actually work! it's not like it could be WORSE!! south bound on ash-dunwoody at 5pm is a complete disaster as it is!

  • @anderra88
    @anderra88 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    If they did not remove the ramp meters entering 285 west bound this will actually make matters worse as you will have a shorter entrance ramp since it no longer loops around and under Ashford Dunwoody.

  • @hemantcshah
    @hemantcshah 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I believe traffic from I-285 East would back up on exit ramp and would affect 285 flow. Besides diamond interchange seems risky and more accident prone.

      It would seem the volume of traffic is too great for a dumbbell interchange. As Justin Graham said, "These [diverging diamond] interchanges should be the standard for High Traffic interchanges and Traffic Circles should be the standard for lower traffic and rural interchanges.".

  • @craigh2069
    @craigh2069 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    DDI's can move TWICE as many cars per lane as traditional interchanges. 2-3 MILE backups at 13 & 65 in Springfield GONE after DDI is built.
    Anyone complaining about this needs to shut up & drive one first.

  • @EclecticHillbilly

    The only apparent provision for bicycles or pedestrians is a crosswalk on the far side - which goes from nowhere to nowhere. No provision for bikes or pedestrians to cross from one side of the overpass to the other. FYI, Louisville/ Superior, Colorado DDI is designed with bike lanes, as well as pedestrian walkway and bus stops down the middle.

  • @Xener09

  • @anb740
    @anb740 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    FYI, this God forsaken debacle has NOT eased traffic during rush hour. It has actually made it worse causing even more cars/trucks to back up onto the interstate. And unless you know exactly which lane you have to be in (and where you're going) before you drive into this mess, you're screwed. You know it's bad when they have t-shirts printed that says "I survived the Ashford-Dunwoody interchange".

    there was an accident in the first hour of operation at the one in round rock, texas. say no more. the process on paper sounds good, as shown in this video, but if you watch it closely the traffic in real life does not move that quickly. nor does it depict rush hour volume. visualization and reality are different concepts. this may be too much for some drivers to understand as driving on the opposite side of the road is not natural except for the drunk. (travis and williamson county have notable numbers of wrong way drivers)

    • @CMRinehart
      @CMRinehart 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +powerwindow2 They are putting one of these in Sarasota at I-75 and University Parkway. With all the older drivers in the area, I predict it will be a disaster. Way too complicated.

    • @tarcal87
      @tarcal87 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry but just because some cannot follow signs shouldn't be an excuse to make an efficient, safer interchange - which it is.
      Based on your logic, we shouldn't even have traffic lights or left turns, for fear of people causing accidents as the red light is hard to notice... do you see that it's exactly the same?
      However this design exists to minimize left turn conflicts, the single biggest accident source.

    • @CMRinehart

    I don't like traffic signals I. This concept left turning traffic stops twice before leaving the interchange. That is no different from a standard diamond interchange. The reasons I don't like traffic signals are that they are dangerous, when someone runs the red light a serious and maybe fatal sccident can occur. They cost a lot of money to the tax payers in electricity cost and equipment maintenance, and I don't like sitting and waiting for the light to turn green. I would be more in favor of a double roundabout interchange. That would entirely remove the crossovers and traffic lights. It moves more cars through the interchange faster.

      Alexander: Fair points, but the goal isn't about shares of the pie that is green time. The goal is to avoid backups. Where appropriate, DDIs accomplish this, thereby making *any* driver going through them likely to save time over the regular diamond interchange.
