One thing I've noticed about flatheads is that even with their large mouths, it's their abrasive sandpaper-like teeth that do the damage, not their bite. I've noticed that they don't have any bite force,. They simply clamp down lightly and their teeth puncture and rake wide scratches into the skin. Their teetj are small and needle-like and tightly packed together into sharp scratchy patches.that go through the first layer of skin. Even a 20-pounder I caught couldn't bite hard enough to even cause any pain in a finger, but the teeth scratches drew a little blood.

Helps the catfish teeth stick to your foot. And helps protect your feet from sticks and rocks. We often do it barefoot too. Depends on how sandy/rocky the area is.
