Gant Chews Up Bohn
John Gant ended nearly three years of championship finals frustration in capturing the $150,000 True Value Open by defeating Parker Bohn III, 223-190, for his second PBA title.
Gant, Independence, Ky., the PBA Tour's average in 1986, not only collected the $27,000 first prize, but re-qualified for the Firestone Tournament of Champions with his win. The 29-year-old hard throwing lefthander was the leading qualifier in the tournament and found the top-seeded position much to his liking, after having qualified in the second slot six times previously. He had finished third in last year's True Value tournament, also hosted at Landmark Recreation Center.
Gant led Bohn, who was appearing in his first championship round finals, by nine pins through five frames until Bohn left the 4-6-7-10 "Big Four" split in the sixth and struggled In vain to catch up.
The opening game paired Akron, Ohio's Ron Bell against Dave Husted, Milwaukie, Ore., with Bell prevailing on the strength of a 10th frame double, 214-205. Bell then was nipped by Houston's Pete McCordic, 238-234.
Bohn was hardly intimidated in his initial game before network cameras and matched McCordic through 10 frames, forcing a two-frame rolloff after their 245 tie. Bohn was first up and struck, and McCordic then spared twice and Bohn closed the match out with a spare and strike to advance, 40-35.

I watched this event. My friend and I practically lived at the local Bowling Alley. We were both top notch and loved the game. Sidelined by drinking and other foolish pursuits. These guys gave me inspiration. I also love Motocross!!!

Being lefthanded, it did my heart good seeing two lefties in the final 5. There was nothing like PBA bowling with Chris and Nelson followed up by WWOS with the man, the myth, the legend Jim McKay.
This was back when bowling was a real sport and you had to learn how to throw the ball with technique and generate your own power. Now people get a 14 pound ball and throw it at the gutter within 5 boards and watch it come back and crush the pins......Reactive resin has ruined the game as well as easy lane conditions. I used to love this game but it has changed too much in my opinion and I quit bowling several years ago.......well thanks for the memories MR. 300!!!!!

I agree. You still have to hit the pocket, but RR was the genie that should never have been released from the bottle. I miss the days of the Firebolts, the Angles, the U-Dots, the Hammers. Thanks to Mr. Bowling, the classic PBA Tour rocks on for us old fogeys (lol).

The reason the PBT was so successful on ABC, is because they had strong and loyal sponsors: AC-Delco; Brunswick: AMF, True Value; Firestone; Quaker State; Miller Beer, Budweiser, Rolaids, Choice Hotels etc. Also the bonuses were impressive: $100,000 for a perfect game ($200,000 in the True Value) Also you had the "Miller Slam" ($1,000,000 if any player won all 3 Miller sponsored tournaments.)

I agree. His ball hit so damn hard. After just watching 1 strike ball, it was hard to imagine how he didn't average 260 lifetime. Lol. ..it was like a bomb going off
