People love bringing up the NBA as a rebuttal. For the most part, white Americans still play basketball and the sport continues to be popular among white Americans. On the other hand, baseball used to be very popular in black American communities. MLB, I believe, is the main reason for the decline in popularity. Keeping talented kids in the minor leagues for way too long & having an unfair international draft that favors Latin American players; which makes it harder for players in the US, Puerto Ricans & Canadians to shine. MLB spends more money on child labor camps in Latin American countries than in lower income neighborhoods (of all races), black Americans communities or inner cities in the US. These labor camps would be criminal in the US, PR & Canada! It’s all for cheaper talent. People like to use the excuse of “MLB is the most diverse league”. Black Latin American players are not the same as black Americans. Two totally different cultures. People wouldn’t compare a white Ukrainian to a white American for the same reasons. Latin American players, black or white, have more in common with each other than a black American player. Just ask Tori Hunter that played for the Twins or Jimmy Rollins, for example. Hell, even Hispanic Americans are culturally different than players from Latin American countries. Back to the Latin American subject: MLB puts their priorities in producing more players that come from Latin American countries. Mostly because they can train 8 years for 16 hours a day, no healthcare, no education and they won’t even bother teaching these kids English (which could be beneficial to a child later in life, not just in baseball.) The exploitation is shameful. The Latin American scouts are akin to traffickers & MLB looks the other way! Final note: Baseball in Philly was huge during the 2006 - 2012 years, especially in black communities. Ryan Howard built ballparks in inner city neighborhoods in Philly. Equipment and other fees are helped by donations and sponsors. Today, baseball is still huge in Philly (mostly due to the postseason last year) in black communities and beyond! Remember the Taney team that made it into the LLWS with mo’ne Davis? The Phillies used to have almost the whole starting lineup that were black Americans in the early 2010’s! The city and black community leaders have put in the effort to promote the game. MLB should prioritize promoting excitement for the game again, instead of building baseball fields in the UK. If they can’t, Americans will stop going to ballparks & we’re the number #1 consumers.
Actually nba and mlb have the same issues. They’re aren’t any superstar white American superstars like in the 80s in the NBA. All the white nba stars are non American just like MLB.
