Just wanted to say thank you so much, I've been learning how to rock hound from you two. Not many good videos on youtube that actually get right in the action and do a concise job of explaining what your seeing, but you do a wonderful job thank you so much. All I have to say is please make more videos, and please look into filming in HD at the very least 720p, so much is lost in the image quality. Thank you again!
Thanks for a wonderful comment Recluse. It's our pleasure sharing our videos with you. The cameras we use are all in the highest HD quality, but my problem is I think my editing program. Been trying to resolve this issue and hopefully will get to the core of the problem soon. Thanks for watching and wishing you all the very best.
Hi Joy, You should do ok at the public fossicking area especially if you walk a few hundred meters up or down the stream. Look for pockets of black spinel behind boulders and dig down around these. Where we were was in a private property where there's unfortunately no public access. Best of luck on your hunt.
I wish I could spend a week watching and learning in person. I am a Native from Maine... just a bit too far to visit. Lol thank you for he teaching anyhow.
We've scratch around Black Springs b4 and found out that it's too much hard work. Grabben Gullen is definitely my favourite sapphire hunting ground. Hope you'll get the chance to go to GG. Good luck and Happy Hunting. All the best, Liz
Liz Kreate About 40 years ago a friend of mine got a big blue sapphire a black springs and he was offered $5,000 cash before it was cut. I was with him when he found it.
You're welcome. That's not by chance the Black Springs between Oberon and Goulbourne? If it is, there's some really good Sapphires and Garnets in that area. Hope to catch you on the stream one day.
The patch was in the floor of the open cut a dip thay had missed by fluke chance I found it , but the best stone I got was from the public area [dug out] 14ct flawless blue on blue thought it was blue glass the colour was sooo intense never seen anything like it anywhere most of it is quite small with anything over 5ct uncommon try the bottom of the gullys running down of the main mountain or very large tree stumps can be very suprising ,simmiler and bigger stone can be found at lava plains qld
Hi Liz My husband and I are going to the are this weekend and were going to the public fossicking are near Crookwell. Would love to have details of where you were. We have not fossicked solo before but are up for the challenge. We did go to Rubyvale, Qld and did go to miners area where they show you their mine and you get to fossick their rubbish under their direction. it was fun.
lol@kangaroo poop.. i like the idea that you're having fun at the same time. very happy vibe. all the best & keep that camera rolling, all your video clips are awesome. always wondering how people find these amazing gems.. again thanks for sharing guys..
Wow, Australia seems to be rich in gold and gemstones. I know you have Lighting ridge and coobeer peddy for opal and then you had one of the richest diamond mines in the world. A lot of the fancy color diamonds came from there. Then you have sapphire, topaz, peridot, zircon, garnet and no telling what other kinds of gems, not to mention gold. We have a lot of gems, gold, silver and all here in the states as well, but not as much public lands to prospect. Keep up the good work. Happy Hunting.
thomas101834 Hi Thomas, I'm so thankful that we have so much areas where the general public can prospect......for now. It's slowly getting less and less areas open to the public due to a lot of people/prospectors not doing the right thing. :-( Cheers, Liz
great vid guys, just a question how big do they have to be before they are worth something.. i have a few from a trip to ruby vale area uploaded a vid with some pix of them would you be able to tell me what they are and if they are worth anything???
+Umpie Thanks for watching Umpie. It's difficult to give you an exact figure as there are a few factors involve in determining the value of sapphires. Below is a link that might give some answers to your question. All the best, Liz www.gemsociety.org/article/sapphire-jewelry-and-gemstone-information/
Generally, you won't find any untreated/unheated Sapphires like these for under $500 per carat. Fine untreated/unheated Sapphires over 5 carats can cost upwards of $1000 plus per carat.
Thanks for the video !!! very informative and your funny as hell :) I'm taking my 2 little girls up to Nundle this weekend to pan for Sapphires and gold...now i have some idea what to do...they love crystals and shiney things. Thanks again and keep up the good work :)
Hi Liz, l am close to the gosford region nsw and my youngest son is hounding me alot to go digging for gem rocks. He is looking on youtube alot on digging gems and l am looking to take both my kids fossicing for a weekend away, could you recommend the closest place available to me to dig for what is available, Thank you kindly Michelle
Hi Michelle, The closest to you that I know of would be the a place called "Sapphire Bend" at the Vulcan State Forrest near Oberon. Just google it up for a more detailed info on how and where it is. Good luck and happy hunting. Cheers, Liz
Nice one. Posted any vids here showing off your stones? I wouldn't mind seeing some of these beauties you found. I never spent much time at the public area - assumed it was worked out. Never heard of anyone finding saphs up that way, very interesting though. Where, Undara (but that's all NP right?) or maybe Mt. Surprise - but that's only Topaz, Aquamarine, and Smokey Quartz....? I just did bit of searching on the web but nothing so far re sapphires.
30 cutters! Whoa! Nice. Did you find them digging up near Sapphire Bend Rd or down in the stream? I never had much luck at Black Springs, even though I did spend a LOT of time and hard work looking. Still, I enjoyed every moment! These days I live closer to the Central Qld gem fields and have a soft spot for Glen Alva
Thanks for watching and commenting liviu. We don't sell any of the gold or gems we find as we only do this as a hobby. But I do have a video entitled "Sapphire" where you'll get an idea of it's value. Just look under my Playlist (Gold,Gems and Treasures)....Cheers, Liz
Don't give up on black springs , yes there very very patchy took me three years before I got my first patch over 30 cutters per sieve quality of stone is far beyond that of other australian sapphire true blue on blue stone grabben gullens material is like what you get around the porters retreat area lots of big bombs heaps of zircon spinel ect not much of use and a lot of parti stone only the odd decent stone . The deposit at black springs is much larger than most think try DIGS on d,p,i website
+Linda Requeno Yes Linda, you can find sapphires in America. One just have to do a little bit of research to find the exact locality where they can be found. Good luck and wish you all the very best. Cheers, Liz
Looks can certainly be deceiving. With practice, the task becomes easier as you get to know which of the gravels contain the riches material and one tends to then concentrate only on these gravels instead of shifting huge amounts of overburden for little return. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers, Liz
It certainly has been getting a bit of a hammering but there's still plenty of good stones for those who are prepared to walk a distance from the bridge. Thanks for the comment Riley. Cheers, Liz
ausriley567 Both sides of the bridge is private property, but the land owner doesn't mind fossickers walking up and down the stream so long as they don't make a mess of the stream edges. Fill in all your holes and you'll be ok.
Hello I am a beginner gemstone hunter, could you please DM me the spot location in this video, I have been to oberon, found some small blue sapphires but no where near the size in this video. The other day I went to Grabben Gullen creek and the place had been absolutely thrashed, the public fossicking area was ruined. If you would like to tell me the spot just reply and i will send details. Thankyou!!
I like the Sapphire, I'll come and find it too❤❤❤❤❤

Have you ever tried UV light (short and long wave) for gemstone prospecting at night? Some gems will show fluorescence under UV light.
❤❤❤
Juist a single spinel or zircon would be an exciting find for me. I loved your video.
Caver461 You've got high standards...:-)
I get so excited even if it's just a quartz chip. Thanks again for the comment. Cheers, Liz
That's a nice collection of pretty gems

Wow 12 years ago Was that when Wal first got sick ? Never seen Sapphires on the top sieve ! Good size ❤
He was diagnosed 16 years ago. We started uploading our adventures on TH-cam 4 years later.🥰

Lol I was informed on what a saphire in the raw looks like and you have an entertaining personality.
I only know of Gold areas on the South-East Queensland. But the Central Queensland area is where most of the Sapphire fields are.
This. Video is still appreciated your awsome... thanks for the knowledge

I live in Croowell where in Grabben Gallen did you find sapphires?
Hi Jeffrey, It's on Sapphire Road, where the bridge crosses the Grabben Gullen Creek. Cheers, Liz
Fun video,thank you !
Great spot !
Damn! Why was I wasting time fossiking at Black Springs when I could have been finding much nicer stuff like that at Grabben Gullen.
Nice, how much money you made from that?i need to know pls.

No. This is a free area open to the public. Thanks for watching. Cheers, Liz

Is it valueable ?
Have you found any yellow sapphires?

Its a shame the public area has basically been cleaned out.
It certainly has been getting a bit of a hammering but there's still plenty of good stones for those who are prepared to walk a distance from the bridge. Thanks for the comment Riley. Cheers, Liz
