You are the first person who spotted this mistake! I just did not think about the legs… realised right after i finished…. There is another mistake - i blew the wrong panel. The one that exploded is on the other side and the explosion damaged the antenna. I cut out the wrong side so the antenna is fine…
@@bobblum5973 Yes, i successfully failed to depict the successful failure successfully...) I am working on a SaturnV now - took a month to get all the valves on the engines correct, building the navigation computer from scratch... - I took the early mistakes personally...
@@buzuuu If you're modeling the Saturn V I recall it being mentioned on someone's TH-cam channel (probably Scott Manley) about the insulating blankets on the F-1 engines, and how they're usually not shown. Good luck with it, enjoy the build!
Beautiful tribute to Apollo 13 Alexander. I'm just getting back into modelling after dabbling in it a bit in previous years. I was at school during the Apollo missions and was obsessed with them. I vividly remember after school running full pelt across the local park to get home to watch the BBC's coverage with James Burke and Patrick Moore. I have made a few models in the past of spacecraft, 1/72 Airfix (I think) lunar module. That was about 40 years ago! I still have that in a glass display case that I made for it. I used gold wrapping paper from chocolate bars for the descent stage and dry cement dust for the lunar surface. I also have a 1/32 scale command service module, again made quite a while ago. This was produced by Monogram. It's got a bit battered over the years and now has bits missing so I have recently bought the kit again. This is by Revell packaged as the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. It seems to be the same kit so perhaps Monogram have been taken over by Revell. I also got the 1/48 Revell lunar module at the same time. Pity they're not to the same scale. Looking forward to building these. My only other completed spacecraft models so far are a Airfix Saturn 1b and a 1/72 Redstone Rocket with Mercury capsule by Dragon. Your video has inspired me to try my tribute to Apollo 13 if this kit is still available. I don't know if you are aware but the BBC recently did a fantastic series of podcasts called Thirteen Minutes To The Moon. They really are one of the best accounts I have ever heard of the Apollo 11 and 13 missions. While I was watching your video I kept thinking to myself I'm sure I know that music then saw the credit to Tim Dodds. Great stuff. Take care my friend and happy building.
Thanks! Have you seen this channel? th-cam.com/users/JacksonTyler Lovely space documentaries. Best i have ever seen and i believe it is just one man making them... I am almost done with Gemini iv model by dragon.. And i have a huge saturn v by revel about 25% there. Gemini will be a video, saturn is too big to film)
This actually inspired me to make my own. The busted shelves for the service module are almost done, but that's about all I've done in six months because I do several things at once. And also because I decided that I needed to do all the work to make it look right, and maybe I should have done it differently, but you know. I chose slightly different LEGOs for the job from my stash of extra bits. LEGOs do not like being filed down, even with diamond files.
Well done! I was considering buying this, but I am extremely un-talented with my hands, sorry to say. Your work here was delicate and precise, and it turned out beautiful. Mine would probably look like a 2nd grade construction paper project.
It comes with practice... try something small, don’t expect much... just enjoy it. When you get some experience go for something ambitious.... it’s all just for the fun of doing it... (i also want a collection of space crafts.. but thats accidental)
I just realised.... "Homemade Documentaries" (my favourite documentary channel) has seen my sht and commented on it! Thanks! (This is my other channel. I mostly do paintball videos) This is not really a channel... i just make videos of stuff i like doing... However, i have some videos coming: model of Gemini IV, model of Saturn V rocket, and a cooking video - i am making insalata di polpo (octopus dish) This set is cheap, and the molding is quite bad... but i am looking to have a collection of spacecrafts and important space exploration events. This one is one of my favourite historic moments - a successful failure. Blew up in space and still everyone came back alive. Next i am making the first spacewalk by americans - gemini4 I have an eye on a luna 3 model, first photo of the dark side of the moon. And souyz apollo space handshake, but that one is not easy to find
Great work, I am going to try this with mine, thanks for sharing... though I had to look away every time you were using that knife cutting towards your fingers!
I built so many of these when I was a kid, including the 1/96 Saturn V. Now I'm building the Dragon 1/72 Apollo-Saturn V. I'm a glutton for punishment.
Awesome work! Don't want to depreciate your achievement but is the damaged panel the panel of sector 4? In my opinion it might be closer to the high gain antenna. We should also see the umbilical bridge between CM and SM when looking on the damaged side.
You are correct, sir. The correct panel is on the opposite side… and the explosion damaged the antenna… Unfortunately, had to cut the wrong one to maintain structural rigidity of the model. The bridge… it was there… for a while, didn’t hold - so I gave up. I rebuilt the internals 4 times.. ended up with the simple “good enough for government work” version. Insufficient patience supply There are quite a few mistakes in the model…
Thanks! I used two part transparent appoxy... it takes 20 minutes to dry... which gave time to work on it (not doing foil ever again, its a nightmare)... super glue was another option, but i would spread the foil first and then touch a bit of glue... i thought the apoxy would give a better result
Sir I built an Apollo command service module by Revell many years ago . I did some workon it . Can you tell me what color the service module is ? I need to do some touch up work Bill
I used valejo air paints. Black base, gunmetal, medium gunship gray, chrome highlights. Then black, brown, and a little earthbrown for damage. Black, brown washes... Its hard to put a label on this one... The sercice module should be a little darker and a little duller than the capsule itself.. But its just chrome/gunmetal... I also found that some paint brands "dont like" others. Tamiya goes well over anything, valejo does not like being on top of tamija... I would recommend using the same paints for touch up as the originals...
im very far from pro builder, but i wanted to try out one of these kits, i once did some wood working with gold leaf , basically you spray some sizing tack down and the gold leaf is so thin it sticks to it and you brush off the excess with a dry brush, do you think that might work ? wondering if you ever attempted using it instead of foil?
Yep, gold leaf would work.... For this specific model - foil is better as it also creates appropriate texture... For some models, gold leaf works better. Either way - it is a hustle and it is easier to just paint)
Yeah... it is not perfect... first attempt at filming modelling... it is not as fun as i thought it would be to film... Storage is a huge problem as well... battery... overheating.... After all that - focus is rather low on the list of priorities)
Its mostly movie magic... You do not see me messing things up, fixing them, etc Working on a Gemini 4 now... I have repainted that thing 6 tines already, and i have to do the heatshield part again...
Hi. I am an italian boy. I am 13 and I bought this kit. It's the first time for me like model Maker but I don't know how can I choose the colour for every piece. How can I choose it? Thanks a lot for the help Luca
Hey! You need silver, black, gold, white. Those you NEED. you need something for interior and something for detail. I would suggest something in blue and red. And these would be enough... You can mix a little black to the silver to get "gun metal", so no need to buy that... Just go for it. Try with whatever you can get. If you don;t like it - try again) good luck
Bravo on wrapping the foil. I hate LM's that come with molded foil all over the body. I think I would have gone a step further for the realism . The Real LM had layers of clear aluminized Kapton and Mylar. Topped with a clear yellow orange Kapton. all layers intentionally krinkled, There is also so clear brown kaption in places. Ton increase the reflectiveness. Perhaps a first layer of very reflective mylar with a mirrored surface. It would be tedious to add those real thin layers of stuff and hopefully not make the parts look fat. Part of the support structure for the legs was chrome. Not gold.
