    Once again, a well-thought-out review with solid points. Huge thanks for taking the time to research and review the bracelets! I’m looking forward to that video. I’m hoping for close attention to detail: endlinks and how they fit, links, screws, clasps, finishing, durability, solidity, feel, weight, looks, value, all of it :)
    It’s amazing how there is almost no information or reviews about aftermarket bracelets, even though they sell a lot. As you said, even the sellers themselves don’t know if their bracelets will fit a watch! If I was selling them, I think I would do my homework better. Another example of this problem is the Hamilton Khaki King; there are rumors online that the bracelet of the black dial version won’t fit the cream dial version. I’ve tried to find out about it, but even contacting Hamilton themselves didn’d clarify the matter - they just said it ”should fit”, but they weren’t sure. I have the cream dial version just like you do, and would really like to buy the stock bracelet for it, but ”should fit” is just an unacceptable official answer for a bracelet which costs about 160 euros alone.
    Anyway, thanks again for a good job! Your channel and Just One More Watch are two of my favourite watch channels. It really shows you put a lot of time, thought and effort into these.

    Great review. I have one myself, and I agree with all of the points you make. It's a bit steep on price, but I think it's well worth it once you have it in-hand. It's a beautiful piece that looks great with any strap. You can dress it up or down as needed. It's my everyday watch now. PLEASE PLEASE do a review of the bracelets and straps you recommend. I'm eager to get a bracelet for the thing, but need to hear more about how well things fit first. Keep up the good work.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I'll definitely do the bracelet one, maybe in a few weeks. In the meantime I'll tell you I like the beads of rice. Fit is good, but not perfect. Bracelet is nice, and milled clasp is good. Only downside is folded end links.
      The President version seems like a little lower in quality. fit is the same, but stamped clasp that's not quite as good. Also folded end links.
      Strapcode bracelets will be nicer, but also a bit more too.

    This is an excellent, measured and detailed review. I particularly appreciated your discussion regarding the alignment issues with the compass. I originally was put off with this watch because of that problem, but your reasonable discussion has put it in a new perspective for me. I eventually caved and picked up a new “ghost” here in Japan when one seller on Amazon put a couple for sale at about $600. This particular model really is a great looking watch and considering Seiko are putting 4r36 movements in watches up to $700 (e.g the darth turtle) , getting this excellent movement with sapphire for a similar price may soon be considered a bargain!

    • @RelativeTime

    "If Seiko says it's OK, I guess it's OK." Although I do not quite agree with that. I also do not mind having cyclopes on a watch and I do like the green dial version of it.

      I've seen the non-screw down bezel crown a few times, and it's always worried me a little if you actually take it deep in the water. The O-rings should be sufficient, but I've always worried about accidentally turning it under water.

    • @tezzanewton
      @tezzanewton 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The deeper you go, the more pressure is applied to the seals and the tighter they seal against the stem. Until they fail, which will be way beyond 200m. Rest easy, it’ll be fine.

    Most watches that have cyclops…look like a cyclops, this watch has a dewdrop. I’ve actually had people ask me if I had a drop of rain on my watch! it’s elegant. It’s perfect and I love it.

    The new white Alpinist is by far my favorite version. I’m also ok with the price, no one is being forced to buy it. The only design element I still can’t get past, are the asymmetrical crowns. But even that could change with over time, as certain designs kind of grow on you after a while. The Seiko Monsters come to mind.

    My favourite part in this review was your analyze of the compass misalignment. First off I've actually never seen any comments on this in other reviewers on the Alpinists (I might've missed out on that), and it's something you'd hope would be correct for the costs these are galloping up to now. BUT second, it was interesting to hear that other makers in your collection wasn't exactly perfect in that matter as well.
    Of course that's not a defense to Seiko QC issues, but it was an interesting turn. Keep up the good work!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks. On this one I think its a matter of reality vs expectations. At this price they should figure out how to have everything lined up. Yet since i haven't seen anyone else do it (at least not yet), it's hard for me to really come down on them for it.
      Originally that was the plan, and I was going to get footage from my other compressor style watches. Yet everyone I looked at was a little bit off.

    About the internal bezel play, I have never seen nor encountered anything like that with my Legend Diver and Polaris Memovox.
    Mind you, I’m quite observant when it comes to my watches. I tend to find myself unintentionally observing the dials of my watches more times than I’d like to admit on a daily basis.
    Regardless, it was always a pleasure when you lend your perspective on these watches. Great review, might pick this up even though I already have the original Alpinist in green and gold. 👍🏼

    Great long term review man. I use to own the SPB119J1 cream dial alpinist. I think for a 200m WR, sapphire crystal amazingly designed field watch, its great compared to swiss offering with the exact same specs, if there are ones. The watch is worth 700-800USD imo. Yes its not the perfect watch with bezel misalignment with it not being securely fast within the case, which i think is a really good point you made. I think more thought needed to be put onto strap options, I personally thought the alpinist was way too classy and i didnt want to spend money on another leather strap so i ended up selling the watch. If i were a collector of seiko pieces, or just one in general i would've gotten the sarb017 and if i was an alpinist fanatic, id get the black alpinist because at least it shows a bit more value with the bracelet and its design. Anyways, this was an extremely well done review, professional and very nice imagery, you are hella underrated.

    Blown away by this review! I've been watching watch reviews for a long time and never come across your channel. Safe to say I have a new favorite. Keep ut the good work!
    I owned the green baby apinist for some time. Agree with you, my biggest gripe was the height of the watch. Wish they would eliminate the display caseback, nothing to see really. Kind of regret selling it, but this white dial looks tempting.

      Thanks! It's much appreciated! I've always considered myself to be a cult favorite among watch geeks. When people find my channel, they eventually stick around for a while.

    • @jarlandersen7272
      @jarlandersen7272 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RelativeTime So I owned the green one, got a bargain and thought I would check it out. Lovely watch, but some complaints.
      -Some dust/grit on the dial face
      -Too tall for it's other dimentions
      -Somewhat top heavy on the bracelet
      -Only 2 microadjustments on the clasp left me caught between too loose an too tight
      -REALLY wish the lumed the printed arabics
      But overall, I'm just nitpicking really, great watch for the 450$ price I paid. Would probably not buy for retail price.
      Really thinking of getting your ghost Alpinist, as I belive the bigger diameter will help on the wearability with such a tall watch. Also I see Uncle Seiko now does solid endlinks for their BoR bracelet, and that looks gorgeous.
      Thanks for the reply! Have a nice weekend.

    My bezel is off a tad, but I think it is due to the wobbling that can happen in the mechanism. I noticed that if you put the S on the top both N and S then line up, while N on top does not. That does suggest it's not the printing, but the way it changes positions slightly top to bottom.

    @thetimemachine3828 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review. Honest and objective.
    I don't believe the pricing issue is isolated to the Alpinist. Dropping the SKX and introducing the 5KX is comparable, and I have heard similar mumblings from others about different watches (however I cannot remember by whom and about what and haven't done the research... that's your job! 🙂).
    Is Seiko repositioning itself?
    Is the Seiko 5 brands 'affordable Seiko' reputation being reinforced?
    Is Seiko *really trying to cement* its three-tier pricing policy with the Prospex line?
    Does Orient somehow fit into the equation?
    All good questions IMO.
    Anyway back to it.
    For example:
    Seiko 5 - $
    Seiko - $$
    Seiko Prospex - $$$
    In some respects one could answer 'yeah...so what's new??'
    However I would say that 'what's new' is that this seems to have less to do with different levels of craftmenship, and more to do with levels of demand.
    I can hear a Seiko exec somewhere yelling:
    "why are we retailing the Alpinist for $400? They love it! Just put a new movement in it - but don't go crazy!, just use something that doesn't cost us much but make sure it has the specks to 'sell it'. And whack a Prospex logo on it too. Bang! $700!
    They'll pay what we tell 'em to pay".
    So the question is:
    Is Seiko gouging us because we love the watches design?
    Does Seiko listen to our gripes re. specs etc.?

    Dear friend, surprisingly, If you take a look to the dial, you may notice that the indices alignment with the hands center looks wrong. This could explain the moving misalignment of the bazel. This is discouraging about buying a japanese perfection item...

      No, the dial indices being centered with the hands perforation. You need a transparent ruled ruler to check it. Take a line between opposite indices and over the center… I did it on your dial photos… I may be wrong of course

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@claudioviniciocottoarechav8751 it's entirely possible that it might be a little off. I think that, as well as the dial not being perfectly centered with the case happens more than people think. After all, when they put these things together they have to leave a little bit of room. Just be able to fit it in and out of the case. Or to be able to easily mount and dismount a dial. It's just that some designs show off this flaw more than others.

    Don't forget, movement aside, the fact that the crystal is now AR coated. Holding a new one next to the old SARB, the new ones look that much clearer. But the 400 buck price on a SARB017 was after years of it being on the market, and then getting popular because they were dirt cheap. The model you reviewed seems to end up there now, it's down to 500 bucks in the EU.
    So a nice review of a nice watch. I got the blue one on bracelet. But kind sir, could you please let me know (or do a vid) on the half-canvas, half-leather straps you were using here? They were gorgeous, and I'd love to know where you got them.

      Relative Time the one I got from told me compared to swiss watches like tissot, the margins for these watches are big. Honestly for a tiny bit more than 700 I could get a tissot automatic open heart 80hr. So obviously its either Seiko looking to lower sales probably not handling the demand or they are gambling on the fame they have received recently. this watch shouldnt be more than $550 specially with the virus crashing economies and people just focusing on the necessities, in such times luxury items drop.

  • @fletchoid
    @fletchoid 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Reviews of the older series noted similar flaws, like the bezel alignment , but for the price they could be overlooked. Now the new series, with similar flaws (and the ugly cyclops) is really out of the price range where you can overlook them. Yes, it is a beautiful watch, and I will surely keep and eye out for a bargain, but I find myself looking at other brands for my next “gotta have it” watch. It seems that Seiko has decided to abandon budget and mid range watch collectors. Many of us would rather spend $700 to get 2 cool watches that filled a gap in our collections, than $700 for one watch with well known flaws. This might be a good thing for microbrands. Thanks for the in depth review.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I watched a number of earlier reviews a while ago, but maybe skipped over that part. I'm just like everyone else, I don't always watch the whole thing.
      That was close to my assessment on the bezel at first. That at $700 it shouldn't be overlooked and they should do better. Until I started looking at my other watches with internal bezels. 2 of the 7 are in the same price range as this, and they also aren't perfect. They are off just a little bit at certain points.
      You think for that price they should be able to iron that out, but I don't know.
      You are also spot on with them abandoning the mid range. Killing of the SKX, the 017, and the 033 are perfect examples.

    Very nice presentation on the cream dial Alpinist. I unfortunately am stuck between the green and cream dials. Frankly I want them both. There are some SARB017s still available out there, but to be honest, I actually like the cyclops and the exhibition back. Just which color to buy. Now however there is a new issue as seiko has updated the design again. The new watch is slightly smaller at 38mm and more streamlined by loosing the crown guards. Gone is both the cyclops and rotating compass bezel so I guess you won't have to worry about misaligned components going forward. But also, by loosing these elements, the Alpinist has lost a lot of its originality. Frankly, Seiko just turned the Alpinist into a Hamilton Kaki Field Automatic. One last point, another significant increase in price at $1100.00 Seiko is really pushing the value boundary. I look forward to a future video with the next Alpinist and hearing your honest opinion.
