Roger Maris was more than just a home run king. He was a fantastic athlete in multiple sports. In high school football he scored five touchdowns on kickoffs in one game. A state record that still stands. Coach Bud Wilkerson offered Roger a full football scholarship to Oklahoma. He also was a great baseball player that never has received the credit he deserves. Hitting 61 home runs was a mammoth accomplishment. He also had great playoff numbers. He should be in the HOF.

Roger Maris was not only the homerun king and superb defensive outfielder, he was one of the most moral men to ever wear a baseball uniform. Pat Maris never had to worry about her husband fucking around on her because it was simply not in his DNA. A loyal husband and family man, if anyone deserved a long healthy, life... it was Roger Maris. I think he was only 51 when he died.

First, what does being a great high school football player have to do with belonging in the baseball HOF? Second, I'm not sure either of Maris's MVPs were really deserved. Mickey Mantle was likely the better player in both years, certainly in 1961 his numbers, other than home runs, were better. But, even assuming his MVPs were valid, there are lots of players with MVPs who aren't in the Hall. Maris was a fine player, but I don't see the case for him in the HOF. He hit less than 300 home runs in his career and only hit more than 30 home runs twice in his career. I'm sure Maris was a good guy and all that, but if he hadn't hit the 61 home homers, would anyone be pushing him for the HOF?

Wilson was inducted by the HOF Veterans Committee. Frequently, the player benefits from an extended gap between milestone thresholds, which spotlight their seasonal performance, i.e., Wilson's 191 rbi's in 1930.
Likewise, the gap between Randy Johnson's 300 career victories and the next 300-game winner will probably result in another two or three high 200+ pitchers being elected by the VC ⚾

Right you are and I've been saying this. 1961 was the first year they went to 162 games and if Roger had broken the record say 10 years later there would not have been such an outrage. Also If it had been Mickey Mantle instead of Maris there would not have been that too. The commissioner at the time had been good friends of the BABE! So many factors were against Roger who was a great guy too and a better man than Mantle or Ruth! Gee wiz I've written too much now! hahaha

Maris is the legitimate single season home run leader. I grew up a Yankees fan and I remember when Maris hit 61. When he was healthy, he was a very good player but unfortunately he suffered some serious injuries that really hurt his play, first in 1963 and then again in 1965 when he played with a fracture in his hand. That injury wrecked his career as he couldn’t grip the bat properly afterward and thus couldn’t hit with power any more. Roger was MVP in 1960 and again in 1961 but I don’t think his career numbers are good enough to put him in the Hall.

Then make your case, you said nothing here. Maris should not have been given the 61 MVP, Mantle or Cash should have won the award, both had better years it's not even close. With respect to Hall of Fame selection, I cite the following rule:
"No automatic elections based on performances such as a batting average of .400 or more for one (1) year, pitching a perfect game or similar outstanding achievement shall be permitted".

Maris career numbers are pedestrian so yes 2 MVP awards and some All Star appearances but overall not Hall of Fame worthy.

Roger Maris's record was a fluke, his career didn't have much else (still better than a lot of folks.) If Roger Maris is HOF, then so should Denny McLain & Bo Jackson. PED's are nothing new, ancient olympians ate bull testicles, Pud Galvin injected bull testicle extract, there should simply be a don't ask don't tell policy in an 'untested league' and the untested league champ goes up against the WS champ in an annual exhibition game. Who would get higher ratings, the rule followers or the home run hitters? Of course, Aaron Judge just beat Roger Maris's record; he doesn't look like he's on steroids (weighs a lot, but he's lean and not bulky; no specific signs of steroids but there are lean athletic steroid users that don't get bulky.)

Nobody cares what you think or how you feel about this guy or Barry Bonds. Guess what there isn't an asterisk by either of their names.
