    This was incredibly helpful. I cannot stress that enough! I’m in the middle of creating a solo show for my final year Independent Study in College and I have been struggling for quite some time and your video has brought me so much clarity, comfort, and excitement! Thank you so much. I’m now looking forward to the day I bring it all together and am ready to share it with the world!

    Holy Wow, this was SO helpful! I need you in my life! I have been acting for 15 years and finally decided to create my own show. That thing about giving power away is so real. I made a commitment to workshop this new project at the end of October and I have SO MUCH TO SAY but I am also shaking in my boots because formatting is a challenge. Thank you for this video.

    This is incredibly insightful, thank you so much April. Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Pryor, John Leguizamo, and Coleman Domingo are four exact examples I had in my head when I started watching this. I would love to see your work but I'm currently in France. Bring it on across the pond! :-) And 5, 6, 7, 8!

    April thank you! This was very good. I'm looking forward to the others. I have a story I have been telling for about 3 years. Every time I tell it....people laugh, tear up, praise, and celebrate - they are sitting on the edge waiting for the ending. Here is the difference - I am not an actor, poet or comedian. However, on several occasions I have been ask if I ever considered make it a one-women show. I didn't even know what a one woman show was. I just tell the story with a little humor, gestures and drama. With that being said, according to your video I'm not sure this should be a one-woman show or not and if not do you have another suggestion?

    Hi. Thanks for this great insight. Does a solo show have to do with various characters? I would think it can be about a "one" character throughout

    • @AprilYvetteThompson
      @AprilYvetteThompson  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it can be about one character....what makes it solo is that one person is performing and telling the story

    Thank you but please don’t down play stand up, because solo shows have there roots in stand up

    • @AprilYvetteThompson
      @AprilYvetteThompson  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not downplaying it at all...just being clear about the structural differences so that when folks decide they want to work with me, they know what they're getting themselves into. I work in the professional off broadway and broadway theatre world where narrative and structure as well as a actor being skilled enough to completely transform into another human being is the expectation if you want to get produced. I want folks to know that before they decide they want to work with me so we're not at crosspurposes. They are two different genres all together.
      For example, the most successful solo shows on and off broadway could stand as regular well made plays. Meaning a theatre could cast several actors in a play that was originally a solo show and it would work as a multi-character well-made play....structure, structure, structure, narrative, character driven well made plays. I teach actors who want to become writers, not just solo performers.
