When Jeff squeezes his eyes shut and ponders aloud "Is DuckTales better than Catlevania?", you really begin to appreciate how lucky we are to have an actual working scientist on this stuff.
Fun fact the (very good) 2017 Ducktales series spends a not insubstantial amount of time on the moon and uses several arrangements of the moon theme for it (it’s arguably a certain characters theme). Uses it really effectively, too!
Oh weird, We had Captain Comic for MS-DOS growing up I had no idea they ever did a NES version. in the DOS version Captain Comic is a recolored SMB Mario sprite with a motorcycle helmet added which I guess they felt was beyond the pale even for an unlisenced NES release. The MS DOS version, as I recall, is a bit slower paced with fewer enemies on screen at once which I feel like makes it the better experience, but that could be abject nostalgia.
"HOW IS THIS GHOSTBUSTERS 2?" - Mr. Turner, responding to a teammate's frustrating pantomime during a game of charades on the children's tv show *Fairly Odd Parents*
That Duck Tales moon theme unlocked a nostalgic feeling in my brain despite never having played the game before. It was probably used in some flash video I watched as a kid.
Launchpad was pushed into a couple Disney Afternoon shows. He was mostly featured in Duck Tales, as well as the movie. But also became a sidekick in Darkwing Duck.... I thought he made cameos in Tale Spin as well... but, I guess not. I remember seeing the Duck Tales movie in the cinema when I was a kid. Same goes for Ghostbusters II. I saw Ghostbusters II in the theatre when I was 8... and to be honest. I loved the movie as a kid. Because it was 'more' Ghostbusters, and that was all I cared about. But it's a movie that I feel mixed on at later viewings. But... there are things I still like about it. I also had the soundtrack on cassette. The game... yeah... it has that 2600 vibe to it.
I nearly died laughing during your first attempt at "Roof Top Jumping" in Crash 'n The Boys. It was like a really dark sequel to Cool Runnings; "Cold Runnings: Nobody Walked Away".
I had Captain Comic for DOS! Like a year ago I watched a full playthrough and found out I actually had gotten to the last level back in the day. Was also shocked to learn this as I also learned the enemy patterns & placement was straight up bullshit. I’m amazed I got that far
Ghostbusters II was too hard for me even with a Game Genie as a kid. Also, Jeff not finding out about the ability to throw the traps with Select was very on brand!
It’s very apparent that Activision worked on The Simpsons games and Ghostbusters II, the noise the game makes when shooting the logo is the exact same as spray painting objects, and Bart Vs. the space mutants lol
By the Omnissiah, I remember all these games; I remember seeing some of them in Nintendo Power when the issues were new 😂 And even back then, Ducktales really felt like a departure from/more expansive most NES games. Which was kind of surprising back then, because I hadn't expected CAPCOM to put so much effort in to it.
Heck yeah, love to see Crash n' the Boys in the top 50. Definitely one of my favorite Kunio-Kun games on the NES. I don't think the Ice Challenge game advertised in the ending ever got released in the US, but it is also a fantastic game.
Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge is my NES guilty pleasure. I understand it's just button mashing, I understand it's just an Olympic-style game, I understand it's probably not a good game (I haven't gotten to the official Science rating, so I can only speak from my heart). But if you ask me for a Top 10 NES games list from me...I'm not putting this on there, are you kidding? But a Top 20 NES games list, I can find room for Crash 'n his Boys. Crash, for me, is like The Legend of Kage for Jeff. They're not good, but they're still good. Edit: Top 50? Hot damn, that made my day. Maybe it's not a guilty pleasure after all.
Jeff also hit the nail on the head when he said that this game would be more fun as a multiplayer than as a single player experience. Judging it only as a multiplayer game, I'd scientifically put this game in the Top 10.
i had Ghostbusters II on the Atari ST and it was broken as fuck never got past the first level and as an innocent kid i just thought i wasnt good enough :(
"That guy (Launchpad McQuack) had his own show, right? Spin Tales... Spin Drift?" Jeff I know you're too old for those shows, but I regret to inform you that you're wrong in at least three different ways on that one.
I looked up that DuckTales sequel: it came out in 1993, and cartridges are extremely rare- I saw an Amazon Marketplace listing where the seller was charging $700! Somehow I don't think it's worth spending that much on it.
If Square One TV and 3-2-1 Contact taught me anything, it’s that this program and the science therein should be made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
I was going to mod my Wii U today to get around an internal memory issue, but it's so far gone now it won't output video or sync a GamePad. You know what will never fail me, though? *8. Bit. Nintendo. Games.*
Launchpad McQuack is not from TaleSpin, that show was anchored on Baloo the Bear from The Jungle Book as a pilot. Launchpad was created for DuckTales and later showed up on Darkwing Duck. Despite the confusion, I think your dislike of him is warranted in any case, if only for his dumb name.
It’s odd that a Power Pad would be required “for the science” when a Zapper is not. I realize using a mouse works well enough but it’s not the scientific method and is a subpar replacement.
There's a completely different Ghostbusters 2 game by HAL Labs called New Ghostbusters 2, which is very very good. It 'only' came out in Europe and Japan so nobody talks about it that much.
When Jeff squeezes his eyes shut and ponders aloud "Is DuckTales better than Catlevania?", you really begin to appreciate how lucky we are to have an actual working scientist on this stuff.
I dunno he recently told us we could flush our castlevania carts down the toilet
I mean if that is what the science tells us, who are we to question it?
Hard questions and even harder science.
thank god, I just got to the end of the action 52 video and I forgot what regular games are like. The healing starts now
I'm not 100% sure if I'm going to finish that one. They were all starting to blend together 😅
Watching Jeff at the end of Ninja Assault go "That's good. That's really good." had me worried for the man.
“I could just go to bed, we could move on with our lives and pretend this never happened”
Tbh. It was a good 6 hours 😂 You get a Section Z like, a rope platformer, and a reason to throw away Castlevania
@@darrnellnott07 ah an ooze-like
I hope Jeff remembers thinking Launchpad was the star of Talespin when he gets to that game and realizes you are a bear.
But is DuckTales better or worse than Alfred N the Fettuc?
I can't believe how much mileage you get out of the "ooh wah ah ah ah" and "AW AW" soundbites.
Fun fact the (very good) 2017 Ducktales series spends a not insubstantial amount of time on the moon and uses several arrangements of the moon theme for it (it’s arguably a certain characters theme). Uses it really effectively, too!
The music on the Ducktails moon level is top tier Capcom

20:58 Got to love when you're allowed to fall down a screen without using the rope/ladder. Ninja Gaiden would have killed you for that.
The song during the Ecto-1 portion is the song that Bill Murray plays on the piano in “Groundhog’s Day.”
That Duck Tales moon theme unlocked a nostalgic feeling in my brain despite never having played the game before. It was probably used in some flash video I watched as a kid.
the moon music always gets me a little emotional, reminds me when my grandmother passed away...just ETCHED into my brain
Who could have foretold that DuckTales would become the ultimate palate cleanser?
Science. Science foretold it.
Everyone always talks about the moon music in Ducktales, but give me the Transylvania theme any day.

Man hearing that 8 bit Ducktales tune made me feel like a kid again.
Proud to know my contributions are going directly to helping a Power Pad find a new home, and to the quality of this research.
I nearly died laughing during your first attempt at "Roof Top Jumping" in Crash 'n The Boys. It was like a really dark sequel to Cool Runnings; "Cold Runnings: Nobody Walked Away".
The PAL Ghostbusters 2 is a totally different game and actually pretty great!
I did a quick search and found out that the spondylous is not extinct. So it is apparent that the Dynowarz did not destroy them.
SPONDEELOOS
Man, the whiplash of going from Action 52 to DuckTales 😅
I usually watch the twitch vod for chat but half of DuckTales is muted, so I'm here
Jeff you have to mark this as educational if you want to show scat.
Very accurate discussion when you were talking about the old Activision 2600 guys basically making 2600 games on the NES.
I had Captain Comic for DOS! Like a year ago I watched a full playthrough and found out I actually had gotten to the last level back in the day. Was also shocked to learn this as I also learned the enemy patterns & placement was straight up bullshit. I’m amazed I got that far
The music is so fucking good in this game. I know that's not a hot take but the composition and use of the sound chip is just incredible here.
If the rumours are to be believed, the two dudes from Forgotten Worlds are also "affiliated wtih scat".
Wait, S.C.A.T.? Or... scat?
1:52:09
I wouldve been okay with 3 hours of just DuckTales, but I guess the science must go on
Ghostbusters II was too hard for me even with a Game Genie as a kid. Also, Jeff not finding out about the ability to throw the traps with Select was very on brand!
The "DROP IT!" voice sample from S.C.A.T. is just directly ripped from Robocop ;)
It’s very apparent that Activision worked on The Simpsons games and Ghostbusters II, the noise the game makes when shooting the logo is the exact same as spray painting objects, and Bart Vs. the space mutants lol

Both Captain Comic and Spiritual Warfare look fairly decent for unlicensed games, frankly
1:32:10 -- I'm gonna choose to believe the "oh shit, you got Spoony?" was a nod to the Spoony One.
The pogo stick in DuckTales totally reminds me of the shovel bounce in Shovel Knight.
Heck yeah, love to see Crash n' the Boys in the top 50. Definitely one of my favorite Kunio-Kun games on the NES. I don't think the Ice Challenge game advertised in the ending ever got released in the US, but it is also a fantastic game.
Not on the NES, but it did finally get localized for a kunio-kun collection on switch a few years ago!

Duck tails was the first game I ever beat as a kid I had to have my parents explain what credits were
Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge is my NES guilty pleasure. Jeff still looks worn out and haggard from the Action 52 bender.
i had Ghostbusters II on the Atari ST and it was broken as fuck never got past the first level and as an innocent kid i just thought i wasnt good enough :(
Natsume was indeed formed by ex-Konami folks.
Jeff Gerstmann is still a threat!
"That guy (Launchpad McQuack) had his own show, right? Spin Tales... Spin Drift?" Jeff I know you're too old for those shows, but I regret to inform you that you're wrong in at least three different ways on that one.
My favorite way is that Tale Spin takes place, like, _decades_ before the DuckTales cartoon.
At least Ghostbusters II is a real-ass video game vs. the first Ghostbusters game.
Oh no, as soon as the demo for Ghostbusters 2 started I had flashbacks to when I rented it as a kid. First one is better.
Thank you.😊
I looked up that DuckTales sequel: it came out in 1993, and cartridges are extremely rare- I saw an Amazon Marketplace listing where the seller was charging $700! Somehow I don't think it's worth spending that much on it.
It's not a bad game, but it's no DuckTales
If Square One TV and 3-2-1 Contact taught me anything, it’s that this program and the science therein should be made possible by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
Damn, talk about unlocking a forgotten memory
The very first line outta Jeff's mouth almost made me black out.
I demand you build a list of best NES music before we die! (You and I are the same age.)
Could use a keyboadr's numpad on its side.
My PP retention has been lacking.
But is Action 52 better than Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus?
SPONDEELOOS
The science says NO
Aw shit my Oxy meter is running low I need that steez
The Moon theme is one of those "LET'S GO ON A GODDANG ADVENTURE"-tracks. It's so good.
RIP Cheese

I love science
moon doesn't even make the top ten NES tracks - mega man games exist.
DUCKTALES
WOOO AH AH AH AH
Time?
S.C.A.T sounds like a horrible mash up of Life Force and Rollergames
But Karnov has Karnov in it.
I'm like the opposite of Outkast. I don't like the way they move.
The game sound is always a little bit too loud compared to Jeffs voice 😢
Um, first? I love these long episodes. Keep em coming, Jeff!
There's a completely different Ghostbusters 2 game by HAL Labs called New Ghostbusters 2, which is very very good. It 'only' came out in Europe and Japan so nobody talks about it that much.
