5 Red Flags for Weak Glutes (FIX THIS!)

  • Weak glutes are one of the most common muscle weaknesses exhibited. The irony is, the muscles of the hips and glutes are designed to be the strongest in the entire body. Given their location around the pelvis and their influence on the center of mass and spine, they are designed to be incredibly strong and capable of providing stability in all three planes of motion. As you’ll see in this video however, many of us are walking around with very weak glutes and I’m going to show you how to figure this out quickly.

There are five tests that you can easily perform to determine the status of your glutes. The first is the simple quadruped kneeling leg extension test. Here you want to get on all fours and straighten one leg out behind you. Make sure the knee is straight and that your hips are squared up to the ground. From here, attempt to squeeze your glutes on one side and lift that leg up towards the ceiling. Do you feel an intense contraction in the glute muscles?
If so, that would be a good sign that you have the ability to activate your glutes. That is not enough however. From here, you now need to bend the knee to further shorten the hamstring and put more of the emphasis on the gluteal muscles to perform the same activity of lifting the leg towards the ceiling. Squeeze again and see if you are able to reproduce the same discomfort. If not, that is your first red flag. Be sure to test on both sides as imbalances are common between the right and left legs.
Next you want to perform the bridge test. Lay on your back and press your heels into the ground with a bent knee position. Lift your hips as high as you can. If you already start to feel some cramping in your hamstrings on either side this would be an early red flag that you are dealing with weak glutes. If not, then proceed to lift one leg in the air and see if you can hold your trunk and pelvis up throughout the test without sagging. Once again, if you feel cramping here or if the pelvis is unable to be kept lifted then you will need to address the weakness in your glutes.
The third test is the lunge test. Here you want to see what the strength of your glute medius is in the frontal plane. Take whatever weight you would normally use for a set of 12 to 15 reps of dumbbell lunges and then combine that weight into one hand. So if you used 25lbs for example in each hand, you would hold a single 50 pound dumbbell in one hand for this test. Lunge out with the leg that is opposite the hand holding the dumbbell and try and maintain an upright torso without fallling towards or leaning to the weighted side. If you can’t, then you have a major red flag for glute medius weakness.
The fourth test is actually more of a detection of a symptom. Do you have low back pain that is pin point located just to the right of the bony prominence on your pelvis called the PSIS. If so, this could be coming once again from weakness of the glute medius muscle. I did an entire video on this topic that you are going to want to see as it shows you how to fix this problem instantly by using a myofascial technique.
    Low Back Pain Fix -
    • How to Fix “Low Back” ...
Finally, the complicated and difficult dragon flag ab exercise is actually much more easily performed if you allow the glutes to do their part. I show you how the lack of glute activation is a tell tale sign in the poor performance of the exercise and if you can’t activate them to improve the way you do this movement then you definitely should be alerted to the red flag pointing to the weakness.
As you can see, the glutes are a major and important muscle group in the body that cannot be overlooked regardless of whether you are a high performing athlete or an average joe dealing with the repercussions of having weakness in this area. If you are looking for a complete program that overlooks nothing when it comes to training every muscle in the body, be sure to head to athleanx.com and get the ATHLEAN-X Training System.

This man is a true hero. I just went to his website to look what programmes he offers so that I can improve my training. I filled out his questionaire and when the result came I was blown away. The suggestion was to watch the youtube videos so I can learn enough before I purchase one of his programmes. I was ready to buy but he said "No, You can get all you need right now for free." This man truely wants people to get healthy and fit for their own good and not for his. I already believed his videos more than most other channels because he obviously has the medical knowledge about the body to back up everything he says, but the fact that he tells potential customers that they can get the knowledge that they need for free instead of taking their money makes me respect him 1000% more. This motivated me even more to train harder and smarter out of respect for the work and authenticity he puts in his videos. You will probably never see this comment under the 1300 others, but please know that you already helped me out a lot with these videos and I will continue to train, even harder now because of your honesty and your integrity.

Thor Odinson no they really don't. A steroid user doesn't have an idea on limits of a natural. So for them to give advice on and be detailed they really don't offer much. They can give generic advice but not specific to the individual. But as to this video I doubt a steroid user would be able to explain on the level of Jeff. Not many professionals in general can that's why Jeff is next level compared to everyone else.

This is quite literally the best channel on youtube. I've been struggling with lower back pain for almost 4 years now and no one has been as effective as you, Jeff, in explaining what the true issue is and what steps I can take to fix it. I feel relief as soon as I do any one of your recommended exercises. You really do put a significant amount of thought into every exercise you teach and have such a great understanding of physical therapy, and I love how you emphasize the quality of a rep over the number of reps. You put out quality content in each video and don't hold anything back, so it's easy to tell that you really do want to help people. It's hard to find authenticity like this on the internet, you teach from the heart. Thank you and congratulations to you for your hard work and creating something that's truly beneficial for others. Your channel is an amazing piece of work. You should definitely get an award for this gift that you've given to people.

Without Jeff's videos I could probably never go more than a month of training without injuring myself and quitting due to clueless frustration. I had lower back problems for almost a year in the exact position you showed and after doing a lot of research I have been thinking about my weak gluteus; I started to do squat with width stance and in full depth (instead like before at the parallel) to activate the gluteus more and the back pain decreased significantly for the first time. Now watching this video you confirmed me that! Thanks

I'm a personal trainer, yoga teacher and sports nutritionist (R.D.) and see so many people outright wasting their time "training" in gyms. I'm so grateful for your comprehensive approach to common trouble spots (e.g., glute medius weakness, hip and shoulder issues, etc). Love your explanations about anatomical involvement, causes and most importantly, specific strength and flexibility training, including do's and don't to address root causes of issues. Your experience as a physical therapist distinguishes your approach and is something I especially appreciate. So grateful for your work and for all the lives that are so meaningfully impacted by your dedication. Awesome work, THANK YOU and please keep it coming!!!

I've been having lower back pain for a month now exactly where Jeff was talking about in test 4. My jaw literally dropped when he pointed to my affected area because i looked at other videos but it just didn't seem right on what my problem was until now. My highest squat PR when my back was fine was 155 for 5X5 (I'm 15 btw) and my deadlift being 195 for 4X5 but deadlifts always made my back uncomfortable. So far in this month of pain and annoyance I've been getting really frustrated watching my legs get weaker and weaker. Today I went to the gym trying to attempt to lift light weights for the squat and deadlift leading to deadlifts and barbell rows in my regular program being the ones that inflamed my lower back once more like usual this month (squats felt fine thank god). As I was getting super mad i decided I had to approach this way more seriously and stop giving it "time to heal" because at this point i knew resting wont solve anything. That's when I stumbled on this video that blew me away. I never knew my glutes were so damn weak it literally suprised me so much. I'm gonna focus on strengthening my glutes so I can hopefully squat and deadlift big weights again later on. You're a hero Jeff, thank you.

And I'm really excited to hopefully, and finally get some back pain relief after so many years of dealing with it, and not really understanding why I was hurting so much... its all coming to the surface now, and I thank you sir... who would have thought, proper glute and and back exercises would take you pain away?

Great video. Years ago, I messed up both my Achilles tendons. I've also had chronic lower back issues my entire life, regardless of deadlifting capability. Two PTs both told me the surprising culprit: my glutes were weak and under-developed versus my quads, hamstrings and calves. Truly bizarre how so many muscles, ligaments and tendons work in conjunction with others that you might not think are related.

    • @thedolcetto81
      @thedolcetto81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Your comment is like a revelation to me!! I've been having a lot of problems with my Achilles tendons, not being able of getting rid of inflammation. It all started with rock climbing on very steep terrain, that is overhanging walls, where you need strong hamstrings and glutes. I thought it was my shoes but the problem kept recurring and I couldn't run either. On the back of my head I kept wondering if it was a weak posterior chain, considering that I also have shoulder problems, and that I was sort of compensating for my weak glutes using my calves and mostly achilles tendons. I never dared to ask my physio cause I didn't want to sound like those who think they know better than the experts. But now you tell this. Thank you so much!
