Not many people I speak to have positive things to say about Southend Airport. They often criticise the fact they attached “London” to the name. But then again, not many people I’ve spoken to have actually flown from there!
It’s actually a very smart and efficient regional airport. Add in the fact that it has its own railway station with a direct link to London, a mere stone’s throw from the terminal, a 4* hotel round the corner, and the fact it isn’t Gatwick or Stansted and you’ve got a pretty pleasant experience. I hadn’t been through Southend for a few years and it was good to be back. Regional airports are a good thing and we’re lucky to have plenty of them in Britain - including some top class ones like Newcastle and Southampton.
The ATR is a great aircraft. I like the quirk that you board from the rear - this makes seats near the back unusually prized, though many people still select front seats out of habit. On this trip I had yet another empty seat next to me. I’m on quite a roll at the moment.
This was a perfectly calm winter’s afternoon. A good day to be flying, especially as cruising took place at just 16,000 feet. There are a number of old airfields and landmarks I point out along the way, as usual...
*Very special thanks to Elliot Szlato, a subscriber and Snapchat follower, who generously offered me a promotional code he wasn’t able to use. Southend Airport had been offering free flights to promote this very new route from the airport. Much appreciated!*
I have lots of videos coming out, including in midweek in the run up to New Year. This is to use up all my reports shot on iPhone before I start afresh in January 2018 with a proper camera. Make sure you have your notifications set! 🛎

Southend is my local airport, and it’s really great. The terminal is getting extended next year (again) and it’s really great to see it doing so well. I particularly like the fact that you can fly from SEN to DUB and then on to America quite easily, and that’s something that I may well make use of in the future.

    • @Paul_Lucas
      @Paul_Lucas  6 ปีที่แล้ว

Didn’t know that about the terminal. Is it being extended to the north or the south?

Superb as per usual thanks Paul. Impressed with Southend Airport, and the plane was so much quieter and smarter than the VLM one you took a week or so back. A pity I can't fly with Dougal...

This reminds me of the time I flew from Milwaukee to Chicago, the princely distance of about 60 miles. I took the rear seat in a battered old CRJ200 and the luggage is loaded right behind that seat into a small compartment between the two rear engines. There was a dog in a cage I saw go up the ramp and I could hear him barking all the way. The CRJ is hideously noisy by the engines. Poor thing.

Hi Paul, one of the features of your trip reports that stand out, in a really good way id you are so good about identifying geographic features and points of interest while in air...I think one of the great pleasures of flying is looking out the window. I simply dont understand when airlines or passengers shut the shades or auto tint prescribed darkness and only focusing on the screen in the seatback in front of you, good job!!!! and thanks

London Southend? We have one up North, we call it Isle of Man Manchester. Just a short ferry ride across a very wide river followed by a few minutes transfer to the City Centre. Ridiculous on so many levels. Taking the Ryanair model to the extreme. I really liked Flybe - flew them many times between Paris And Birmingham on our way to/from Asia. Sadly, we never got on the Dash-8, only the Jungle Jet which was a superb short haul aircraft with superb staff. Thanks for the memory.

I like trains that stop near airports ... I would fly SEN more often if C2C stopped at Basildon (where I have family/friends) - it only takes 35/40 mins to Liverpool Street station. I'm closer to STN, but it's a faff... I had a lovely flight from Norwich years ago... The terminal catering was like being mothered by the WI! Lol -

Nice report. On a side note you can longer fly LGW - MAN. I think FLYBE would make a bundle if they flew that route. There are so many overseas flights that arrive at LGW and there's no easy way to get up to MAN.
I have a great idea for your next trip report. YUL - YVP on First Air. I've always wanted to do that trip but the airfare is just too expensive. I don't know of anyone who's ever flown that route and I'm not too far from YUL. It looks like there are daily flights but I'm guessing they're almost all cargo with only a small passenger cabin.

This airport (Southend) is a really good airport as for smaller airlines like Flybe that use smaller planes can get access to a “London airport” witch means the can run routes that have higher demand like a local one of mine Glasgow - London (any) normally goes to either Luton or
Stansted and lets be honest with you both of those airports are really difficult to get into the city centre from but Southend is really easy to get to and from.

As a teenager we used to drive down to Southend for the w/e. Some great little pubs in the back streets. Hunsdon had another great pub The Turkey Cock it was run by an ex RAF guy, he did it up as a crazy pub. An eskimo carpark attendant, double door knobs, camo piano
show no one could find it.
Southend airport would I use it?? I always add up travel time to the airport, check in, flight time before deciding.

I really like the jazzy song @ 1:35. What's the name of the song?

Hi Paul-I have the same problem as you, I’m booked to go to BHD from NCL on Eastern (booked through FlyBe) and on the app or online I cannot manage my booking-is this a similar problem you have had

No, I was able to manage the booking and select seats etc, just couldn’t check in online. Might be worth dropping Flybe a Twitter message. However I’ve flown Eastern before (on their own, not a Flybe flight) and they allocate seats at check in at the desk. Irritating.

I should of checked out the lounge when I was there. The facilities downstairs were not really up to scratch. Couldn't even get a decent sandwich.

A fabulous route. I'm surprised it's commercially viable?

I'm not sure of the cost of operation, whether they have freight, etc, but it is the quickest way, rail prices are stupid unless you book ahead with a deal and driving is tiring/tedious and prone to delay... He doesn't state PAX. I am presuming most weren't on freebies :)

I miss the good old days of Aer Aaran before Stobart Air took over in 2014
