    Me: Learned to Play My Music 2 Hours After Performing

  • @LS-oh8kv
    @LS-oh8kv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +69

    Organist and harpsichord player here. Something that’s very difficult for piano players like her is to learn to not do dynamics with finger pressure. No matter how hard you press, the note is the exact same volume. The harpsichord is also a very fragile instrument and playing heavily like you would a piano very often results in breaking plectrums, the little piece that actually plucks the string.
    Playing one note as fast as you can is also not recommended as it can also easily break plectrums.
    It takes a very specific style of touch to play harpsichord well. If you play piano very well already it’s easy enough to learn the basics of in a week or so however. It was very obvious she was playing the harpsichord like a piano here, especially around the 8:55 ish mark where she tries to play with dynamics and then plays individual notes with the “123123” method to play as fast as possible.
    There’s a reason that baroque music used so many trills in keyboard, because the notes don’t sustain for long, and because repeating the same note quickly is both challenging and risks breaking the plectrums, rendering that note unusable for the rest of the concert.
    A gentle touch keeping your fingers low to the keys and close together is how I find it works best. Especially when doing Italian or baroque works, but really most of them in general.
    If anyone has questions about playing harpsichord vs piano feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer

      Beginner piano hobbyist, who's interested in harpsichord and organ, here. In playing harpsichord, does the choice of "stops" matter? Can you also tell me that which stop is the most common to be found in them?

    • @ThiloAbend
      @ThiloAbend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maddman9468 I will answer for him. It depends on which stops are built in the instrument. If it has only one 8-foot stop, you only use one 8-foot stop. If you have more, than it depends on which music you play. If it is loud music or soft music, if it is has to be very smooth or "funky", you know... You can play around with the stops and sometimes you use all of them in one piece, but not simultaniously. For example you play a passage with the 8-foot, which has a more round sound, let the same passage follow with the more nasal sounding 8-foot and you create an echo effect...

    • @alexandrusimo899
      @alexandrusimo899 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes and you have her point out that the harpsichord had a slower action, but that's simply because she wasn't playing 'on the string' (i.e. preparing with the fingers on the keys and feeling when the plectrum is right on the string)

    The Harpsichord's action is very simple the key is a lever that extends inside the instrument and has a plectra on it. The plectra extends out slightly and plucks the string. The harpsichordist pushes down on the key and inside the stick goes up and plucks the string. The harpsichordist releases the key the plectra retracts as it falls down to reset for the next note.
    The piano key is connected to a series of levers which speed up the action. A felt hammer strikes the string. The strike and the retraction of the hammer are controlled by the levers connected to the key and provide a more immediate action.
    Thus making our hero's exploits all the more significant.
    Congratulations.
    A very enjoyable episode.

    I had to learn the harpsichord, tune it, and demonstrate that I fully understood it and how all the coupling and stops worked for college credit a few decades ago. The technique is nothing like the piano. They are very different instruments. Pianists are generally not harpsichordists, and vice versa, unless you learn them both over years and years. Mercury Li yea as someone that has played for a year the adjust would be easier, as compared to someone that is used to the size for 20+ years and has a lot of muscle memory built up, it would probably be more difficult. Just my opinion though 😂

      I just tried playing on a trashy harpsi chord in my university. The keys arent that skinny but it requires almost no time for adjustment at all. The hardest is octaves and how far to stretch the pinky fingers out.

    I would recommend taking some lessons with a harpsichordist, if you are interested in learning more. The correct technique is to always start on the key (and not striking from above), and feeling the plectrum before depressing the key--you will notice a little bit of resistance. You lift your fingers very high before striking the keys, which obviously works great for piano, but not so well for harpsichord, as the tone becomes harsh and not singing. I don't think it is possible to learn well in two hours, as one must practice the technique to get used to it. It's kind of crazy that they expected you to learn so fast! PS I enjoyed reading your "practice thoughts".

    Haha. I recently decided to buy a harpsichord, and even though I'm experienced on piano and organ, it was surprisingly hard to get used to the technique, which is incredibly different. I was shocked when I tried instruments. Also, the reverse black/white keys threw me off more than I expected. Repeated notes, like in the Vivaldi double, would be REALLY TOUGH! No double escapement actions for you! Can't wait for my harpsichord to be completed in January! Luckily, it has white keys and black sharps! ;)

    Before my comment starts: Your videos are great and enrich my recommendations because youre a very skilled musician that is open and humble, showing their progress failure and success.
    Now to something i wanted to get off my chest, doesnt matter if it will be skipped by everyone including you, Tiffany:
    Whenever i see you in my recommendation i get really frustrated, sad, angry, disappointed and eager.
    Seeing you having come so far in your life, being independent, having built a talent for yourself and having so much ambition, self-discipline and -respect to keep practising day in and day out confuses and shakes me. You, a 22 year old young, talented woman and on top of that absolutely gorgeous, have reached and learned so much...and i...im a 22 year old, young man studying at a university. Dull, monotonous and lonely, thats how i would describe my life...seeing you motivates me to make more of myself yet at the same time your sheer existence crushes me, youre not the only one who has come so far in life in terms of living your dream but you in particular make me feel that way...idk maybe bc its your charismatic nature that says "i am where i wanted to be" or your gift of having parents that were able to give you something on your way or maybe even something else.
    I know im faulty for being where i am right now so upon clicking on your video and seeing your life just going for you i end up asking myself the same question over and over again:
    "What have I done so far with my life? I still dont have dreams, why, whats wrong with me, what am i lacking?" There is nothing i can profess in now...one third of my life is already over before i knew it...

      same bro. do what you can and want to do right now. i live by the motto "if you don't start doing it now you'll never do it at all". even if you feel like you wasted 1/3 of your life- there is still 2/3 that you can use to redeem.
      i know it might seem late to start things now, but 22 is still a young age. when holidays or a long break comes, use it to figure out what you are passionate about. try out different things.
      i see so much people with so much talent, being way more successful than i could ever be in ten years.
      "what's wrong with me? what am i lacking?" find something you are passionate about and practice and practice and practice and excel on it. though she is very talented, it took years of practice to where she is now, and, she still keeps practicing.
      "what have i done so far in life?" so much things, dude. you graduated middle grade school, you graduated high school. 22 is an age old enough to do so much things. work a small part time job you enjoy, save up for whatever you decide you wanna do.
      everything we do is for our own happiness, isn't it? we study to get a good job that will pay a good amount of money and im turn we'll have money for the basic human needs, and things we want.
      i repeat, and my only advice at this point: find something you are passionate about, practice, and excel.
      a year worth of practice is more than enough. you might think that you are 22 and you haven't done anything yet, but the next- you are 23 and you have started on the path that will make you fulfilled.
      she's 22 but she found her passion and started practicing at a young age. nevertheless, it took years before she became this level of mastery. it's never too late to start. have a nice day :)

    Speaking of unfamiliar instruments:
    My one and only organ jury: despite my teacher promising me 15 minutes to familiarize myself with an organ I have never played before...he was 15 minutes late. The rest of my jury panel was starting to get annoyed at me. "Where's your teacher?" They asked. I replied "I thought he was with you!"
    Anyway, when we finally got into the church, everything on the organ was in French...not that I don't recognize french organ terms, but when you're physically vibrating with nerves, French looks like Greek! ...and I had seconds to figure it out...there was a significant acoustic delay when playing some stops. It was a disaster! I want to puke just thinking about it!
    Long story short, I have SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much respect for you playing A FRIGGIN CONCERT on an unfamiliar instrument like that! Bravississima!

    I developed on an electronic keyboard with no touch sensitivity (and no pedals)... then when I progressed to touch sensitivity... wow! (I could really appreciate it). Non-touch was like lifting weights - I had to 'mimic' dynamics by other means (voice density, tempo changes), then when I finally added volume changes (to phrases and the larger structure), it all came together (never mind the pedals)...

    Firstly. I'm a pianist and the second I heard the harpsichord I was half way on my way to abandoning the piano for the harpsichord 😬. 2 years passed of me searching for a teacher (BTW I'm from South Africa) and eventually I found one (BTW too, there's only one harpsichord and one harpsichordist in the city I live in💀) sooo I would've started playing the harpsichord this year, if it wasent my final year at high school and if things were not so HECTIC. BUT I never actually got to going through with it and I'm purely glad I didn't . Here's why. After listening to baroque music and harpsichord music, and trying to play all this HARPSICHORD music on PIANO. I never really appreciated and embraced the piano until I truly fell Inlove with it, which happened recently. I've then decided to fully devote myself to my instrument and just embrace it for what it is! Currently studying 7th grade, Scriabin and Arne, and I play music from so many spheres, the baroque, contempt, jazz, classical, romantic and even folk. So basically; Just embrace and love whatever instrument you play my fellow musicians! Whatever you do, do it with all your heart! ❤️❤️❤️ And BTW I don't play exams either because all I want to do is play and just constantly be near the keyboard ! And when people ask my grade? My reply "Anything with enough time and practice!"
    I love you all! ❤️
