Dear Brendan, my beloved youngest brother is a veteran paramedic of some 30 + years.....he's seen it all.... and some! I'm so proud that he keeps performing as a consummate professional despite all the obstacles in the way of him and his equally skilled colleagues. You're song helps bring home the message to others that this profession is not without personal costs! Thank-you so much. XX
Thanks for this Brendan. Folks just don't get what we see, and what we can't "unsee". My daughter is now an NREMT, starting her BSN program in the fall to become a Level 1 Trauma & Flight Nurse. I've been in it 38 years now.ER/Trauma, Critcal Care, etc... I know what she is going into, and what she will face everyday. But we are all "called" to do this, or there is no way we could make it, some of us don't... PTSD, killed the line of duty... we all face that. You've captured the feelings quite well. Keep it up Brendan! And just remember when you get to the end of your rope...just tie a knot and hang on!
It's nice to know that I am not the only one who goes through the struggle every day. Five years on the street and three years of chronic depression. Every day is a challenge, but my brothers and sisters in the services help me make it through. Thanks Brendan.
Thank you Phillip. I was also 22 when I started my journey towards ambulance work. I do indeed wish you luck, it's a hell of a ride and can be a very rewarding career.
I'm training to be a paramedic in New Zealand and I think this song is great to raise awareness of what i'm going to be seeing on the job and know it's alright to get help when things stick with you. Thanks Brendan, will be sharing with my fellow trainees
Working the pandemic was the worst of my career. Closing the ambulance doors knowing that it was the family and patients last time probably seeing each other, those last few minutes as they hugged and said I love you to parent or spouse before closing those doors will be the hardest thing to let go. Many elderly people died in hospitals due to no family/social support. Als the other side of patients refusing to go to the hospital in fear of COVID or not wanting to die alone. The effects of the pandemic is starting to show as many EMS providers are leaving the profession in our area.
Only do it for a few years mate. Go on and continue learning medicine and put yourself into a position to change and fix the problems you see when you're a medic. Don't get complacent
Hi Brendan, I'm a student currently over in Perth, I don't know how many times I've listened to this song. I think it is great and great that you are raising awareness and I'm a little scared of what I'm getting myself into but I wouldn't change it for the world. I will also being applying for NSW when I graduate as well.
Hey Kieran, Thanks for the interest. It's a great career really and you've got a head start by actually being aware that there is a down side that can catch people out. Acknowledging it it and talking about it can be the best defence against depression and anxiety. Thanks mate, maybe we'll see you over here some day ;). PS: the full EP (CD) is available at www.paramedicsuicide.com and download at all good digital sale sites.
Awesome Song,When I get m going to be a EMT, Get a feel,of what EMS deals with, and then if I'm comfortable with it, i'll go for paramedic,I love to help people,
My Cousin,Is a Paramedic, and he almost committed suicide,But I came around the corner, and got the gun away from him, before he pulled the trigger,EMS see some terrifying things.I understand what they feel, and I have this group every day around 5pm,for medic, and EMTs to talk, and release all that Stress, and the negative energy they keep inside.
Better have strong morales or a good religion. Emt or Paramedic can see shit so screwed up it will mess you up unless you can decompress. Still have nightmares from being a paragod for 6 years,I am still screwed up but I use my sick sense of humor to keep on moving. Humans are the scariest predator in the world!
This song is dedicated to all front line emergency workers. I have had the same request for police! I'm a paramedic and I write what I know about. Maybe one day I'll write something more generalized for us all. Thanks for getting in touch Katie :)
