    The British have a long time love to open driver and front shooter positions since the ww2 when Universal Carrier was employed! I do get to understand the concept, but I would feel safer if the front panel was actually capable of shielding me from incoming rounds

      @@51ghostrecon Well they are not unprotected, but the threats they offer protection from are mines/IEDs and the like.
      Now, they are meant for scouting/patroles or recce operations, and from that there are different needs. As an example, if you are in an inclosed car, your line of sight, and more importantly your hearing is obssured... It sounds kinda like a joke, but the ability to hear an enemy movement can be a significant asset.

      As far as I can work out when these things get hit by an IED, the armor turns to shrapnel and everyone takes a shower in raw slivers and you get sent home in a pot rather than a coffin. I've only talked to Dragoons and they will tell you there's no good way to die in a tank, these things are less tank, more dying.

Driven by the British SAS (info I got from the local Police) doing maneuvers in the area. Though in my mind I thought they looked longer than the ones in this vid. It's the modern WMIK Rover, even though they have zero protection for the crew, soldiers prefer SA to being cooped up inside vehicles like that. Slap a .50 Cal or a 40mm GMG on it and the trusty Gimpy on the front and you're good to go... plus, it's fast....... proper fast!! I think it gets poo pooed because people don't understand what it's supposed to be used for, it's basically a recon vehicle and it's perfect for this role.

    People seem confused and I can see why..
    To put in context (with my opinion on it) - the Army got absolutely hammered for Land Rover soldier losses due to specifically a lot of IED and IED threat.
    In terms of recon - as was said early, the core request was SAS. If you examine SF usage, they want agile, speed, hitting power (for the size of vehicle). So, if you treat these as recon land rovers that have an aspect of protection against IED, and go anywhere ability + being air liftable - it makes sense.
    Some people below talk about armour. True, but for every ton of armour, you get more compromise. You get heavy, you get slower, you need more horsepower, you need more fuel, you get less range.
    Bottom line, if this vehicle faces a big enough IED, or if it faces full contact, the outcome may not go well. What do you want? an 80 ton monster to do Recce?
    My only issue is the lack of weather cover to be honest. I would imagine these people pretty grim if you are in hours of bad weather.
    Dumb question of the day - do they come with a hot water vessel?

  • @whiskeytangosierra6
    @whiskeytangosierra6 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    As an American, I declare that it doesn't have enough wheels. Needs six or eight wheels. Some armor overhead would be a good idea too, although all you Canadians with frozen brains probably don't care about the weather...
    Of course, I love rolling around in an FJ Cruiser, so can probably go just about anywhere this thing can - but in comfort. Love the grenade launcher mod, I really admire belt fed artillery.

    • @runi5413
      @runi5413 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To think, they could've bought _ten thousand_ FJ Cruisers for what they spent on this vehicle... And I'm sure Toyota would've gladly thrown the "Heckler & Koch Automatic Grenade Launcher + Bang & Olufsen sound system with triple CD-changer" upgrade package in there for free, to sweeten the deal 😄

    I can see the advantages with this vehicle. In the role it's designed for, Recon, you've got good visibility low profile and decent get out of Dodge Firepower. The only thing I don't like is if there is an IED being open, the crew will be fully exposed to the pressure waves that result other than from directly below. In the event of a fire, bailout is a piece of cake. One of the things Israelis actually liked about the World War II M3 white half track, when they got hit they could get out of them fast. And good all-around visibility. A used rim for a long time after the 67 War

      Back in the days motorcycles could be used for scouting, and couriers, and running messages. But now we have radios and aerial reconnaissance so there are options that just does the job better.
      Not to say they are to be discounted all together. Terrorist and Criminals have used motorcycles to carry out hit and run and assassinations. But when used in this manner they tend to be a 2 man team. A driver and a gunner. It was so bad that Indonesia banned more than 2 occupants on a motorcycle and violent crime dramatically dropped.

      @@Marinealver I was thinking low key surveillance. I know they were used by the enemy in Afghanistan. Not sure if the regular army would still use them. Maybe special forces dressed as a local. The reason I was wondering if the regular army may use them was for the ability for lower battlefield signature and high speed escape although the use of drones replaces the need for older methods. I know the British still prefers human surveillance a little more than the Americans.

    I have served in them. what amazes me are the moronic armchair generals that come up with shit that it just would not be placed or tasked too do.
    Sure they have less protection but it is a hell of a step up from the Land Rover WMIK that it directly replaced. as a light reccy and gun carrier vehicle.

    The Cummins 5.9L engine is legendary in the US truck/diesel world and can easily be upgraded for more HP/Torque, while not losing it's dependability. The ONLY reason the larger 6.7L was developed was to maintain similar HP/Torque ratings while being in compliance with more stringent emissions legislation from both US and EU.

      All around visibility. It is not good for close combat. People can toss a grenade in really easy. This was why the American Military after World War I went to full cover vehicles. If you look back at things like the Hellcat or the Greyhound the turrets were wide open at the top four all-around visibility.

Many military vehicles are designed with mobility in mind, to get in and out quickly. Recon vehicles are by their very nature lightly armoured because mobility is the prime requirement.

    • @sabre2182
      @sabre2182 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not used in "urban environments" much....it's designed to operate in the wide open areas like Afghanistan....although they are using them on deployment in Estonia...they are more adapted for desert /arid climates.....
      And just so you know....a sniper...generally doesn't engage multiple vehicles with heavy weapons on board.....these aren't"t used as a single vehicle...at MINIMUM. A two vehicle patrol....more often in a Troop or even Half Squadron sized element....speed...mobility....ability to see and hear...and ability to extricate themselves if they get into the rubbarb....
      That makes for a good recce vehicle
