    What did you think of Sicario? And more importantly is Day Of The Soldado worth the watch?
    Apologies for the late and shorter video today, I've been away for the past week and my mac decided to break so I haven't been able to write or record anything, the edit was also slightly rushed, but from what I've heard in comments, the text popping up on screen wasn't that popular anyway. I can assure you that all of the information is like any of my other videos though. Back to normal for next week!

    that shot of the soldiers literally descending into darkness is just incredible

    This should be on every cinefile's list and every filmmaker's list to watch and learn from the master himself.

    Another masterclass in cinematography by Roger Deakins. It's amazing how he lights his scenes effectively without drawing attention to his approach. He conveys a mood with slight touches of light and color immersing you in every scene. There is always a lot to learn from breaking down Deakins' lighting plans and techniques. Thanks again.

      Researching his films have given me such an insight into how I could light my own scenes, obviously not to the same degree, but there's just so much to learn from him.
      Glad you enjoyed the video!

    I think of Sicario as a really important truly powerful 21st century film that is worth watching more than once. Deakins plays his part along with everyone else to the absolute max. Johann Johansen’s music score using bit-crushed orchestral stabs is terrifying. The editing on the border shoot out had my stomach in knots. The Day Of The Soldado is actually a very good thriller that in hindsight will improve as a part of a trilogy. It needs the return of Emily Blunt’s character to throw everything back into focus. What Deakins has done here is make the extraordinary look mundane, and the mundane look incredible. That takes vision.

      I've got a ton of films on my to-do list, and there are quite a few from Asian countries (In The Mood For Love and Parasite are near the top), but I'll be adding those to, Thanks for the recommendation!

    that scene in Breaking Bad was a flashback dude...
    that's why they chose that color look, the present time scenes in Mexico don't look like that

    great video, earned a subscriber (more than one I imagine) but the background for the movie content is incredibly distracting. it's ok to have the border, but make it static
    edit: ah i see there is already a comment on that.

    • @AngusDaviesDP
      @AngusDaviesDP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      He did, as with all of his other films from the time, he chose Zeiss' Master Primes. Some really sharp, optically clean, spherical lenses. IIRC he's now moved onto Signature Primes.

      @@AngusDaviesDP saw THE BATMAN last night… it’s beautifully shot from beginning to end. Even so far as to break some rules for effect, which adds to the unease of the noir.

    • @AngusDaviesDP
      @AngusDaviesDP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't wait to see it! After Dune, I'll be going to see everything I can shot by Fraser, he really steps out of the comfort zone when it comes to creating unique shots.

    I love sicario and its what made me aware of Deakins who I then researched and realised that the majority of the films I highly regard had him as DOP. Day of The Soldado im sure would be an alright film if it wasnt in the shadow of Sicario, the sequal just isnt as good, also im pretty sure deakins wasnt invloved which defintly biased me.
    Love the videos.

    • @AngusDaviesDP
      @AngusDaviesDP  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah cool! What a film to find him through. I'm sure I'll see it some day, but the fact that Villeneuve didn't direct and Deakins didn't DP definitely makes me bias (as you say), but the cast stuck around so I'm hopeful for it.
      Thanks!

    • @samspinks4138
      @samspinks4138 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AngusDaviesDP Yeah if you try and seperate it from sicario then its a decent watch. Feel like I read somewhere that it is sort of an alternative version to Sicario not a sequal by any means.

    I am a huge fan of Sicario. It is visually stunning and one of my favourite Deakins films. Of course a huge amount of credit also has to go to Denis Villeneuve as well as he has managed to create some of the greatest films of the last decade and Sicario easily stands near the top of that list.
    As for Day of the Soldado. I was really excited going to see it and massively disappointed upon leaving the cinema. For some reason the colour palette just looked wrong to me and the film felt over stylised. The story is really not up to the previous film and I felt this film was aimed much more to a right wing audience. Also the ending isn't very good.

    • @AngusDaviesDP
      @AngusDaviesDP  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's really grown on me since my first watch. Deakins and Villeneuve are such an amazing team, I can't wait to see what they do next.
      I'm interested in seeing it, but I've seen so many comments like this. There was someone else in the comments who said 'Soldado I'm sure would be an alright film if it wasn't in the shadow of Sicario', which I think is a great way to put it (even though I haven't seen it), but films like this will always be in the shadow of something that you can arguably never top.

    • @moviescolin
      @moviescolin 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, Soldado is 'okay,' and I would wager still better than most action movies. There's a few key scenes in it that are very good in my opinion, but as a whole, felt a bit stale. The plot does seem to be a little more "right wing," though some of the concepts it uses are interesting enough in fiction. Composer Hildur Gudnadottir did some amazing things, while also using bits and pieces of Johann's previous work. It would have been better if Denis and Deakins were involved, for sure. Also wish they'd have just called it "Soldado" instead of the full title.
      I'd say it's still worth watching, but not as good as Sicario, obviously

    the irony that you're talking about how deakins carefully constructed these images and then you put a very annoying fluttering white background under it
