I'll agree on the JD winches! Grew up logging with an old '72 JD440B and did lots of private selective cut stuff and we'd often pull trees out of peoples yards and go above and beyond in customer service stuff. Kept busy for decades on just word of mouth that way. Anyway, had some large pine to pull out and we'd occasionally have to lock the diff and spin until the tires were two feet down and the winch would pull the tree over or the skidder out of the trench as long as the cable didn't have any damage and snapped of course.

Bring a back memories. I once sunk an old 1010 dozer up to the seat in an earth dam, early spring. Yep we left it. Nope took a couple days to sign it out by hand. Didn't want to sink our 59 D6 In the dam. Winch cable was about 50 ft short.

Well hopefully that 602 Tigercat cable skidder has a decent winch. People tend to dump all over the Gearmatic or CanCar winches but I’ve had nothing but great luck with mine. They have to be fixed and adjusted and they are bombproof. People cut corners and try to save money on replacing parts inside and they just don’t operate correctly.

I gotta leave one more comment. We had a 648 John Deere skidder back in 2012 doing a job. And you are not stretching it at all. Once that cable was hooked up, you had to get a feel for how much stretching that cable could take because if you just started pulling it would snap that cable like a piece of string. We broke a lot of cable on that job. LOL

Tim I know this was one of your older videos. I was just going back and looking at some of them. Is the winch on a tiger cat PTO driven or huydrlic . And is the John Deere PTO or huydrlic. Reason for asking is I know from experience that huydrlic can be stalled. But PTO driven is just like you said , something is going to give or break . And I'm sure that in this day and age huydrlic has come along way in there winches.

He had the ROPS and real heavy guarding he said on some of those pulls he would lay down in the floor to get away from that cable if it broke, he made alot of money in that Buisness

Won't the big grabber snatch right onto the rops? hop that bunny right out of the hole :) A dozer winch would be helpful but I dont' see many big trees, mostly scrub. Good on you for helping a neighbor of sorts. My baby JD350 has a 24T carco winch on it, and you're spot on, its shaft drive and if you can anchor it well, it'll either pull or break something, I use a short gr70 3/8 chain extender as a safety valve.
