Haruf-e-Maddah (حروفِ مدّہ) are special Arabic letters used in Quranic recitation that indicate the elongation or stretching of sounds during pronunciation. These letters are fundamental in learning Tajweed as they help improve the fluency and beauty of Quranic recitation.
The three Haruf-e-Maddah are:
1. Alif (ا) - Elongated when preceded by a letter with a Fatha (Zabar).
2. Waw (و) - Elongated when preceded by a letter with a Damma (Pesh).
3. Ya (ی) - Elongated when preceded by a letter with a Kasra (Zer).
These letters are stretched for at least two counts (Harakat) during recitation, depending on the context and rules of Tajweed.
