This Graetz Melodia is finally done. The cabinet work takes up most of this video, and the result is amazing. I decided to leave it in a lighter colour than is usual, and am very happy with the choice.
Obviously, bluetooth is a must on this one, to really get the most from this incredible 'Raumklang' speaker system. This 1950's version of surround sound is really good, so I'm going to have a new favourite for a while.
Stick around and enjoy the video.

Forget doing a Tipton, I'll be doing a Caldeira! Outstanding result Manuel. You have shown a top result can be obtained even with limited space and resources. A complex disassembly and reassembly of the cabinet, I would have made a recording of it too. I was hoping you could expand on the 'tweeter' pipes and why they used them in lieu of the standard electrostatic speakers. Thanks Manuel for a fascinating series 👍🙂
Let’s call it a “tipeira” 😂
I tried to do a freq response measurement on the “pipes” but was unable to get good results. I could not disconnect the other speakers as they form part of the entire system, so getting sound only from the pipes was a problem for my measurement microphone. I did notice a reaction at around 7 to 8kHz, but it’s not scientific, just perception.
A wonderful restoration, the Graetz 519 looks and sounds as good as the day it was unboxed.....decades ago in the 1950's. I think you are right in that these vintage electronics should be fully restored and not just repaired - like those brakes on the Land-Rover!🛻
Those loose wires at 25.42, maybe they were preventing interference by conduction, and so routed them away from the loom. Thanks for posting.☀
My pleasure
She is beautiful, inside and out with a superb voice. Great job!
👍
That friendly competition with Dave Tipton always makes me smile. But I guess we can say that you beat him this time! Putting in the BT transformed the old lady into a juke box.
😊
3 min 40 , those pipes look strangely like my bbq burner ! . More seriously, great job again and all off you great TH-camr must organize a international seminars.
Thank for all again.

What a beauty..I bet Amalia sounds wonderful on the Melodia..
Sure does. So does Carminho, Ana Moura and Mariza 😊 That’s a little plug for our cultural assets 😊
Crikey, I now know how lucky I was with my Fantasia that all I had to do with the cabinet was a wipe with Restor-a-Finish and some wax. Can I pay tribute to your camera work. I suspect you probably have to spend at least twice as long at each stage getting the camera and lights set up well, not to mention then having to work around them, so that we can share but the result is so professional. Thank you. I'm so pleased it's a keeper. My Fantasia is certainly not going anywhere either. 😍
Yes, this one made the decision to stop it down quite easy as it was a real mess.
I wouldn’t say the filming and editing takes twice as long as doing the job itself… Probably takes five times as long! However, I don’t begrudge that task as I actually enjoy it.
@@electronicsoldandnew "... Probably takes five times as long!" 🤣 But thank you even more!!

Great job as always, Manuel.
Love the blue Chiquita-Banana-Sticker, haven't seen one in a while. Thay were a big thing for us children in the sixties. Stickers were not so common back then, we put them everywhere. You couldn't walk through Vienna without seeing a blue sticker on a kids bicycle, schoolbag or book. It was just good fun. Our parents sure thaught a bit different...
Of course we were not aware about the company's history, which was characterized by the exploitation of people in the production countries. Such things you didn't hear on radio.
We all went through the sticker phase 😊 and had no idea of the backgrounds
Love the matt finish and color. Nice work!
Thanks
You David Tipton and Jim Burns do a great job on cabinets! 😀 👍
👍
That radio sounds shockingly good! Just goes to show things maybe haven't moved on as much in the last 60 years as some people like to think...
👍 true
Hi Manuel. I will admit I really like the lighter colour matte finish. It suits this style of radio very well. Possibly harder to achieve that a gloss finish as the final, coats have to go on perfectly smooth because you won’t be sanding & polishing them.
I listened to the final few minutes again with my good headphones (my TV sound is so-so) and WOW! I hate to admit it but it sounds better than the Bush VHF 64 I recently finished.
Congratulations on an outstanding restoration of an outstanding radio!
Thanks 🙏 I actually got to listen recently to the Bush 64 that I did on the channel, which belongs to a friend of mine. Still sounds amazing 👍
A Masterful Job.
Thank you
Wow ! That came out nice !
Thanks
Grundig guy here, my 56 Majestic should sound so good.
👍
Beautifully restored Manuel ! I showed it to my mum of 90 and told her 'this is the radio we once had'. I just want to say you did a wonderful job and I wish I could experience the sound myself. 👍🏻
It’s a great lady, and really is worth listening to.
Very impressive work throughout this entire resto Manuel, i like how you work, i can understand why David pointed me to your channel. I should have a similar Grundig 2220CA on the bench to look at after xmas, it'll only be my 2nd radio so wish me luck. Although i finish my cabinets differently, i respect your choice 100% it looks very very good as it stands now. I also noticed the Chiquita sticker and it brought back memories as well :-). Great video thank's for sharing, on my end in the great white north (Canada) it sounded very good, the low end really got my JBLs moving.
Thanks for the kind words, and good luck with your Grundig.
Very, very well! 🙂
Thanks
Really a great job Manuel !! Also a great radio, I worked at Graetz 50 years ago but not on this model, but we produced very nice radios 😀 I also like this colour and finish !
Thanks Heinz.
Great job with a wonderful radio.
Thanks
Beautiful radio, and beautiful job!
Thanks
Well done!! Great job!!! Looks fantastic and a sound to match. These Melodia's are superb radios!! The only thing I have never quite understood is the speaker button. I can't really think of a scenario where you would want to listen to it with the '3D Surround' off. Speech maybe but even then, they still sound better with all speakers activated. Maybe it's just to be able to prove a point about how much better having them all on makes. A kind of poke in the eye for the naysayers at the time. It gave an easy way to shut them up!! 😁😂
I agree. I imagine that button only gets depressed with a sly grin on the owner’s face as he watches the naysayers react 😊
Very informative and entertaining content. Thanks for sharing your knowledge

WOW! The tuned ports are really producing some very deep bottom. Very impressed. I would have loved to see a frequency response from that driver and associated aluminum tubes. 73 OM
I tried that but getting a measuring microphone to work here was difficult. I had to leave the other speakers connected as the entire systems works in tandem, so I couldn’t isolate the output from the pipes at all.
Looks really good with the matt finish. Sounds really good too. I will have to look into that Russian magic eye equivalent as I have a Grundig which uses the same expensive valve. BTW you were right about BBC Radio 4 still being on Longwave - I had to put my radio in the attic to receive it.
I believe it's the 6e5S or 6e5c tube.
It looks and sounds graetz... i mean great.
Sad too see that Chiquita sticker go after this much time (into the video) :P
Strangely enough, I just cannot find it. Must be in the vacuum cleaner or something.
WHOA!! That’s a great looking cabinet. Yudaman!😮. Is you selling those BT units??
No, only use them for my own projects.
Manuel ,the pipes seemed both opened at the down side. Can you confirm it??.Also treble extension works ,but which could be the roll off point 5K-7k..10k?Nice video as usual.
Looks good. 2 small points occur to me.
a) On the rear panel the right hand 'bolt' appears to be missing a washer which is present on the left.. It looks like the omission is causing damage to the panel.
b) On the shot of the replaced 'horn' assembly were the capacitors replaced and protected with heatshrink. What was the state of the replaced capacitors.
My apologies if I missed an explanation in the videos.
Good point about the washer. The caps were slightly high, so I decided to replace them for added life.
The gold dial is unusual but very attractive. Sounds fabulous, well done. I just built one of your bt boards with booster and I’m curious about your changes to it. Best wishes from the very drenched Pacific Northwest 😊
I want to add a switching control using the magic eye B+ line that goes off when you select Phono. Just want to stop the unit being permanently on when radio is playing. It further reduces the chance of buzzing on AM reception.
beautifull case and i like a mate finish-amazingly well done, andGraez is Austrian factory?
German build.
I love the finish - Were any chopsticks harmed in this restoration?
No chopsticks or cats hurt in the making of this video 😊
Hello Mr. Caldeira! I would love to know how did you remove this 'gold' plated metal frame that goes around the front frame of the radio? Did you re-do the gold plating becuase it looks more gold than golden buillion coin!
The frame just came off by itself. All the glue was dried out. The lower brass element was polished with a rotary tool. It’s not difficult, but you need to take care not to overdo it or it may bend out of shape. I then spray it with clear lacquer to protect it from further tarnishing.
I have a Greatz R419 ... virtually the same radio except dial colour. Its on my channel.
I had a head scratch regarding this brass trim.
After removing it by gently sliding a sharp knife under it at the back (inside the cabinet) and then polishing/lacquering it I found it just would not fit nice and snug for glueing.
So I bought a box of matches and cut the heads off. I strategically glued some matches inside the channel of the brass strip where it "grips" the cabinet where there were some excessive gaps.
After leaving these to dry thoroughly I offered the trim up in place and found I had to take a few slithers off of the matches with a VERY sharp knife. I got an almost perfect interference fit without glue this way but obviously I still glued it back in and the matches proved to be an excellent base for the glue to the cabinet.
I have since done this to a couple of other radios with similar brass surrounding trim and you can achieve a very precise fit.
Hope this helps.
Great idea using the matches. I’ve also used balsa wood which is easy to cut and comes in very thin strips. Any solution is good as long as it works for you. Thanks for your feedback.
@@electronicsoldandnew Balsa wood is probably a better option to be fair Manuel but I didnt/dont have any. Guess Ill be on eBay in an hour or two to stock up. Thanks
👍
Manuel, I understand after your wife saw your cabinet refinishing she wants you to re-finish the kitchen cabinets. Joking aside, your restoration is certainly guaranteed your Meldia receiver another 50 years.
You’re right in guessing that this hobby is affecting the number of jobs my wife “finds” for me. Wish I could block her from seeing the videos 😊
Good One@@electronicsoldandnew
Electronically a good restoration as usual if not a biy wordy. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the cabinet restoration with colour and finish is very disappointing. These radios in their day were lovely looking pieces of furniture but Mr Caldeira ruins this appearance thus spoiling an otherwisw good restoration. To restore is not to change.
"A bit wordy"? Not at all! The devil is in the details ... An impressive restoration Manuel. 😄
