  • Be part of the adventure of cycle touring 2,800 km thru 3 countries from Singapore thru Malaysia along the West Coast and finishing in Thailand. 2 months, 3 countries and endless problems with a dodgy rear tyre which caused all sorts of heartache and misery. Where to next????

    Nice mate! I watched your other vid about the GS Safari. Didn't pick you for a fellow Beemer + pedaller. I've ridden a Boon Siew Honda around a few parts of Malaysia. The coast roads would be nice on a bicycle. Pedalled roads like that in Thailand which were nice and cruisy.

    Great video, thanks! I have one little tip though. You mention several times that you use Google maps. I recently discovered an app called Pocket Earth. It allows you to save maps to use offline. You can also add custom waypoints and it has Wikipedia entries available too. You can use it like a navigation software to with planning for bikes.
    Good luck with the rest of your cycling!

      In my experience, Google maps are just so so and Google Maps Bicycling is somewhere between poor and non existent. In my opinion, Open Street Maps - Cycling is generally much better albeit that it is outstanding in Europe, North America and Australasia but not quite as good in Asia*. In order to use Open Street Maps, here's one way you can do it (there are many implementations of OSM including maps.me). 1. Open ridewithgps.com and go to route planning. 2. Plan your route following minor roads and bike paths. 3. On your phone, download the ridewithgps app. 3. Take out a subscription to ridewithgps costing about $50 / yr. 4. You can then download both your pre planned route and the mapping you need in advance. 5. You can then navigate by following your route including verbal cues if you want. The trouble with maps.me is that it does not have route pre planning capacity albeit I think you can import a gpx file - maps.me is primarily for point to point driving. I use maps.me on my tablet as a back up to ridewithgps. Check it out, you might like it.
      * In China, the Google maps and satellite view are offset from each other by about 2km. I can tell you from experience, this is not helpful. If you ever go to China you will need Baidu.

      Thanks for the positive feedback. I have cycled parts of Tasmania and the South West of Western Australia ( my home State). To be honest, travelling in Australia can be expensive and there are lots of 'nothing' out there. I plan to do parts of Europe in July 2017 (euro velo 15) because I like the idea of experiencing another culture at a slower pace.

    • @Keepcalmandpedalon
      @Keepcalmandpedalon 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drove from Darwin to Perth about ten years ago in a landcruiser. Was one of the best vacations of my life. About Euro velo 15, that is really a coincidence, Plan to do that route myself as well coming July, on my way to Northern Italy. It will be for you a completely different experience than riding in Asia / Australia I guess. Very organized and clean. But great bikelanes and great scenery. Switzerland will be expensive though. Did a ride last summer to the south of France, you can find the videos under my account if you're interested. Let me know if you need specific information. Cheers.

    How easy is it flying with a trailer? I have the same Bob Yak one, but have thought flying with it would be a right PITA so have settled on full set of panniers instead. Do you box it up too like your bike?
    Good to see a biker who is also a cyclist, and vice versa. Thanks for making and posting.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alex, I dont have any problems with the trailer....it becomes my check in baggage. I remove the wheel, the swingarm and the 'forks' and place inside the yellow bag along with the rest of my clothes, parts, and other stuff. The bag goes inside the 'trailer' and i cover up some of the sharper edges with bubble wrap or similar. Never had a problem. Only takes a few minutes to assemble at the other end. If i catch a bus, train or ferry then i sometimes remove the wheel to shorten the length and it also allows the trailer to sit flat and not move around. Glad you like the vid.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marko Drobnjak
      Hi Marko, I did have a lot of punctures on this trip because of some damaged rim tape on the rear rim which caused abrasion on the tubes. I started the journey with tyres that weren't suitable (road slicks) and I ran over a screw which wrecked a tyre. I could only find a tubeless type tyre to replace it and it was very difficult to get on and off the rim. While using tyre levers, I think I damaged the rim tape. I am about to start a new journey and have fitted Schwalbe Marathon Plus tyres which hopefully last the journey.

    • @mongreldogproductions

      Hi Kradius, I have an older brother but his name is John, not Sean. Usually I only do the tours, climbing, hikes or swimming after I have booked into the hotel for the night or on my rest days. I don’t like leaving my bike and trailer unattended even though it may be locked up. I leave all my gear at the hotel where it is safe and secure (usually).

    Hi, did you find the bob trailer difficult to travel with in terms of loading on and off of public transportation like ferries, trains, buses, etc.? I am thinking of doing a bike tour in Japan over several weeks and debating whether to use panniers only, a trailer only, or a combination of both, thanks for the video.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Peter Chung
      Hi Peter....I've used panniers before but now prefer to travel with the trailer only for several reasons. I have never encountered any problems when loading it on ferries and other public transport. I usually take the wheel off (only takes seconds) and secure it on top of the trailer. Once the wheel is off, the trailer doesn't 'roll around'. I also usually disconnect the trailer off the bike and seperate the two when I'm trying to explain to ticket sellers where I want to go. If they see the bike and trailer connected together they get spooked thinking it would be awkward to load on and off. Glad you liked the video.

    • @mongreldogproductions
      @mongreldogproductions  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Peter Chung
      Hi Peter...I don't know what the requirements are in relation to the Bullet Train. When I pack the trailer up for airline travel, I remove the wheel and swing arm and also take off the front 'turntable'. This reduces the overall length of the trailer to just the cargo area of the trailer which I usually have as check in baggage.

There is a lot that happens on these trips but I figure I would only show the highlights or what other cyclists might find interesting. It is hard to come up with a balance of how long verses how to maintain a viewers interest before they get bored and change channels. The rain...yeah, I’ve learnt a couple of lessons since then. I was having a bad day then....but you gotta have the occasional bad day to remind you of all the good ones. Thanks for watching.

    Are you using a B.O.B Ibex Trailer?

      Dean Porter
      Hi Dean, correct. Bought it in 2003 and used it on several trips now. I am currently (January 2017) in Burma with it and plan to cross Thailand and enter Cambodia. I have used panniers before but prefer the trailer now. Because of the sprung swing arm it travels well over some of the lesser maintained roads and tracks.

      Sure I am thinking of getting one as I currently have had the B.O.B Yak in the past and had all sorts, shopping and furniture ect and I want to cycle around the world how has your experience been trying to ship it on flights been?

      Dean Porter
      I've never had any problems but it takes a few minutes of prepping. I take off the rear wheel (which only takes seconds), the swing arm, the front 'forks' and place them in the bag along with my other equipment. All that fits in the cargo space of the trailer and it gets loaded into the aircraft as 'baggage'. I usually have to pay a little extra for excess baggage while I am booking the flight (I like to have a total of 40kg to make sure I'm not overweight). When I catch local transport in country I remove the wheel which reduces the overall length and stops it rolling around cause it sits flat. If you are going into cooler climates or are camping and you need to take extra gear you could always fit panniers as well.

      hi Guys, Interestingly Thai Airways Platinum membership will always allow 40 kgs and won't charge if you are up to 5 kilo over. Keep it a secret though.

      Hi Scott Halpern, music credits at end of video. It could be either ‘Released’ by Kevin Marley or ‘Going Higher’ from Bensound.com.
      Thanks for watching.

    Nice but too much of your picture and not enough scenery of what you're passing through.
