As someone from the Netherlands, it's interesting that they said they used the Netherlands as an example, because he left out one important detail: the Netherlands didn't decriminalize ALL drugs. A clear distinction was made between soft drugs and hard drugs. Soft drugs include cannabis, some mild narcotics and a few psychedelics like magic truffles. Everything else is still very much illegal. Not making the distinction between weed or heroin or fentanyl is the reason it doesn't work.
That, no police presence, no criminals held accountable, crooked local politics, and just in general soft as baby shit stance on any type of criminal activity. Also, zero mental health assistance for these people.
Good points I also wonder if the Netherlands still has (modern type) insane asylums? It seems to me this is what happened since the country wide closing of the facilities. These are not just drug addicts these are mentally ill people who turned to drugs

That's the issue no Portland leadership, or Oregon leadership, will address, it is WAY TOO profitable to just keep throwing money at the issue. Where I am going with this is that no one can help them until they want to be helped and no amount of money and housing programs will change their lives until they want it. Like the guy sitting right outside a shelter with no intention of going to the shelter.

I used to live in Portugal and you even though drugs are decriminalized, you cannot openly use drugs in Portugal. If you are caught openly using drugs, you are still arrested, and the government sets up an intervention for you and your whole family. If your family won't do it, they still hold the intervention and make you go to rehab. That is why decriminalization has worked so well in Portugal. It is wild to me places like Portland set up programs based off success in other countries without doing any research into why those actually programs worked.
I'm from Vancouver WA (city right next to Portland) and this is the sad reality of this area. It not only effects Portland, but seeps into the areas that surround it. The government just moves them around, and does nothing to actually help them. These people are desperate for help. And the cost of living is so high that a lot of people don't stand a chance. It's heartbreaking to see a place that has so much natural beauty surrounding it become so unsafe. I love where I'm from, but am grateful that I no longer live there.

@@kreep3r one of the dumbest comments I’ve ever seen. It’s just stereotyping, “this person lives in this area so they’re automatically a terrible person.”
I used to be homeless in Portland. The hardest part about it is that basically every homeless person is addicted to drugs, and they all form these circles where they start to rely on eachother, and they become more trapped. I was able to get out of it, but the main reason why I'm no longer homeless is because I stayed as far away from other homeless people as I possibly could. Also, a note on homeless shelters: 1.) It's very common to have all of your stuff go missing at those places. Theft in shelters is worse than on the streets. 2.) Staff sometimes abuse the people at the shelters 3.) When you're trying to sleep in a shelter, it's also very common to hear people having sex or masturbating. Sleeping in a tent or in a car is preferable to sleeping in a shelter. Those places are also havens for drug dealers. I honestly understand the drug use. I never got into hard drugs, but I was reliant on marijuana because the entire thing was so stressful. The biggest problem I had was resisting the urge to drink alcohol during this time. I think that if I was drinking instead of smoking, I would probably still be homeless (and an alcoholic) The thing most people don't understand about this is most people get into drugs AFTER they are homeless, because it's the only recreational activity that you really have access to. 12:22 People like this are to blame. 13:32 yes, this actually happened to me, but it was a cop who took my ID. I think it was his version of a sick joke. I tried going to the DMV to get a replacement, but they could not do anything for me because I had no proof of identity 17:09 I actually used to do these "nature walks" to try and keep my mind off of being homeless. The scariest thing is when you accidentally find a homeless camp in the woods, and you're unsure if they people occupying are dangerous or not.

@@derekstiles5801 Numerous times in the video people are asked on the streets if they have had anyone to come by and help. The response is no. Not saying money fixes the problem because what does is actually getting out there and at the very least attempting to understand the psychology behind the matter. This is what Kevin is doing and if he had the money I'd wage he would actually have a team out there to attempt to help those who actually want it because the only true way to help someone is someone who wants the help. This is also why the psychology and being in the field with them is important. No one said anything about free stuff and no one said money would fix it, but I am saying if Kevin had the means he'd be a person that'd probably actually be able to help because he wouldn't be in it for the purpose of the charity as the "billions" as you say thrown away to it. Which it is thrown away because the people putting the money up are only doing that to evade taxes and claim they helped without putting forth effort.
I was homeless in Portland with my mother in 2005 when I was 8 years old. There was mental illness involved but never drugs. We lived in a tent in the back of a youth hostel, and when it got cold or if I got sick the hostel would let us sleep in the attic. It was rough back then, but it’s crazy to see the direction it’s gone in. Life is still rough for me, but I have my own son now, my own apartment in Detroit, Mi, and I’m in an apprenticeship to be a traditional tattooist which is cool. I carry a lot of fear with me that one thing will fall apart and I’ll be on the streets again. Just gotta trust the vision.
Question for OP: I don’t know what you were addicted to, but do you think treating people with ADHD meds for meth addiction might help? People are often drawn to drugs to self-medicate their existing problems. I’m wondering if ADHD meds might help the same way methadone helps heroin addiction. I’ve done neither drug, so I’m genuinely asking. I just know that people with ADHD commonly feel like they’re failing at life, and it can lead them into giving up on trying and eventually drug use. Do you think it would help?

The reason why decriminalizing drugs works in other countries is because they added health care on top of that. The US just does it and leaves them to die.
Because healthcare is already strained as is, there was already a deep shortage of nurses, techs, and doctors but after covid more and more healthcare workers left the field.
@@datboybobbycause we mistreat them. The difference truly is that america allows big pharma to make a drugs for profit. Where do you think fet came from? The opiod crisis? All big pharma. They also tricked us during covid into taking an untested shot so they can profit off being a mandated drug. From what i understand if they mandate it, they make a garunteed mil. Booster shots and all are part of it. Not all vaccines are bad but the problem is big pharma adds known toxins to get an autoimmune response that crosses the blood brain barrier in order to prove to the government it should be allowed and mandated due to the immune response it shows. They just leave out the mercury and aluminum causing the response cause a dead virus vaccine is safer than a live virus vaccine due to spread but doesnt have the autoimmune response and the government wont allow live virus cause the spread would be too much to handle for even a common flu since the live virus has a greater chance of instead infecting and spreading rather than just being a punching bag for your immune system to practice on. It gets deeper than that but thats just the surface. The research is out there. Its just hard to find.

The majority of US voters don’t approve of decriminalizing all drugs. These problems are only happening in liberal run cities. Ideologues are afraid to push a drug addict to get help and clean up their lives. Instead they support them with free needles. While there isn’t a perfect solution to homelessness and addiction this is NOT the answer in the USA. Non profits that help homeless and addicts get off the streets are too invested in keeping their non profits funded by keeping them on the streets.
No not the United States. The Democrat politicians. They made it legal just so they wouldn't have to mess with it. They never intended on helping any of these people. Portland has kinda always had this issue but it has gotten dramatically worse over the last ten years. I used to love the culture of Portland the stores downtown area etc the drugs and homeless everywhere completely just ruined everything dope about Portland. we'd still have politicians and corporations directing things, and those 60% ideological leftists undercutting any successful attempts by the moderate or common sense leftists or crypto-conservatives to improve circumstances.
this is what happens when you decriminalize drugs WITHOUT rehab centres and other facilities of that sort. the government does not care at all about these people like they say they do. there’s a right way to do this, and this is clearly not it.
And strict regulation: medication-grade drugs without contaminants and with known strengths, clean needles, staffed centers to consume the drugs where Narcan, CPR, etc can given immediately if needed. It costs a tremendous amount of money, but in the long run, would be worth it. Portland has just given up and let lawlessness run wild.
Adults should be allowed to do what they want within reason, but going from "drugs are illegal" to "all drugs are decriminalized" without a way out this happens.

My son died from an accidental overdose in Portland in 2016. He went there to pursue his music career. I have often questioned why we encouraged and supported his move to that city, but you can find drugs anywhere so I'm not sure what role Portland played in my son's premature death. Of course as a mother, you wonder these things and reconsider all of the choices you made.
I'm terribly sorry for your loss. This could have happened to anyone and of course you want the best for your son. All you can really do is be supportive of your son's dreams. Please don't be too hard on yourself. He is safe and comfortable now. And you will see him again when you are ready.
Unbelievable. I'm 41 and I remember about 25 years ago when I was a few years short of graduating high school Portland was like the bees knees of cities. It was beautiful, the people were just different, and it seemed like the opportunities were endless. It seemed like there wasn't a bad thing to say about it. Seeing it now literally makes me sick. If I didn't know this was Portland I'd have thought it was the 3rd level of hell or something. What a shame.
It's been said in countries where they've had real success legalizing drugs that they DO NOT tolerate drug users walking around the city (and public parks) wreaking havoc while high. In other words they've said "Yes you can do this BUT we are not going to allow you to antagonize, harass or otherwise scare other citizens while doing so." How else could it possibly work? Just legalizing drugs and then allowing them to continue wreaking havoc on the city doesn't work.
It’s not necessarily about them being in public while intoxicated. In countries where they have legalised, you will find users intoxicated in public however this is limited and controlled because of the fact that they are also given support. •Support such as being housed, regardless of wether they are using substances or not - keeping people safe & giving other options rather than the streets. •Financial support & access to Free healthcare, which keep people safe & massively improves the chance of a more stable mindset. • People are given therapy, support workers and coaching, which helps enable people to successfully get back into society. •Offer people various ways of getting back into free education, apprenticeships for different supported programs/volunteer work in order to empower people to get back into the workplace. It’s **this** vital support that massively improves the quality of life for all people, both keeping people safe and enables them to rejoin society. It also massively increases the likelihood of people being able to engage with support to quit substance use altogether. Criminalising addiction doesn’t help anybody but also leaving them to rot doesn’t help either which is what Portland is doing. They just switched rotting in jail for rotting in the streets. Statistically decriminalisation along with support systems work and actually cost less to society in the long run. It’s an extremely effective way to help, actually offer support and pathways that work regardless of addiction status. ----- Of course America seems to operate on a vastly different system than EU countries, People in America can be working full-time and still not afford to have healthcare or pay for their medical bills. Choosing to die because you cannot afford treatment is not something I’ve ever heard of growing up in Europe, however I know this has been the case in America - after meeting a man in Hospital in Copenhagen he told me very directly how shocked he was that this service was free (he was on holiday) And how that they had found a ruptured cyst ( I think?) and if they hadn’t operated he would be dead because despite being in an increasing amount of pain for many weeks, if he hadn’t of been on this holiday he would not of sought medical treatment due to the potential cost and that he would ever dream of calling an ambulance because shockingly you have to pay hundreds for that also.
I’ve lived just outside of Portland my whole life, and I have an older brother on the streets using drugs. Decriminalizing drugs was the worst thing lawmakers could’ve ever done. More homeless users, more dealers, more theft, less law enforcement. They screwed up our city and treat the people like guinea pigs, it’s sickening.
@ and what am I to do? I vote. I volunteer in my community. I donate money to non-profits in the area. What are you expecting? It’s the fuckers in office who made this mess. They should be held responsible and undo what they did.
I find it so humorous how Kevin is just like “that guy is showing signs of being severely psychotic and is brandishing his knife, I’m going to offer him a snickers”
Its so frustrating because its almost like there is absolutely no room for any nuance anymore. You’re either one way or the other. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that while the war on drugs was a colossal mistake, the answer is not simply letting our cities turn into anarchy. At the same time, if we can’t address the ROOT CAUSE of what is driving people to drugs in the first place, then we are wasting our time.
The war on drugs was a complete sham . It was never an actual war on drugs . So it’s ridiculous people point at it as a reason as to why law enforcement won’t work. Does the taliban have addicts ? no . Why ? Because they actually made it illegal , like actually . The war on drugs was never really a war on drugs . It was just a poster with no real action . If you went to the inner cities in 80s you’d see open air crack markets . There was never a war

Applaud for boots on the ground. I do as well. Kevin is a real human. Although I must ask when we thank Kevin do we also condone this happening to a city to require him to be in danger? Hmm.
Measure 110 was a good idea economically and saves millions of dollars for use by police for other more dangerous crimes like murder, terrorism, drug trafficking, etc. it was poorly executed though, fentanyl shouldn’t have been apart of the list of drugs decriminalized. If it was only natural drugs like weed, kratom, mushrooms, mescaline, Ibogaine, dmt etc. drugs more addictive and more dangerous than alcohol shouldn’t be decrimmed, this includes fentanyl, heroin, and crack cocaine.
@@Euouaen You can't really go making a list of ok and not ok drugs like that, because the market changes too quickly to adapt. If fentanyl was criminalized but MDMA was not, everyone would just be on MDMA instead and maybe it wouldn't be *quite* as bad but you'll still be dealing with issues of a similar scope. The underlying problem is that they looked at a model that had short term success and then only chose the easiest/cheapest part to follow; decriminalization. They completely neglected to implement the mandatory drug program that the model depended on to work. Like a huge part the Portugal system relied on was that if cops caught you carrying, you may not have faced criminal charges but you were literally dropped off at detox. Even more, Portugal ended up rolling back a ton of their program because it was way too expensive to maintain, and this is a European country with an extremely high tax-and-spend scheme compared to America. Like ~35% median income tax rate and 23% sales tax on the majority of items. This just isn't a tax rate that most Americans would agree to facilitate.
@@Euouaen, I know that this is your opinion, but I'm a former addict and I did not want to vote for measure 110. I live in Portland Oregon and this measure 110 that the citizens, for the state of Oregon voted for decriminalization and I think it has made it worse
One thing I’ve noticed with the homeless people i know personally and see interviewed… they feel entitled to live however they want and accept zero responsibility for their poor choices. They have no intentions to make this world a better place with them in it. They expect everyone else to make their lives better. They just blame, deny and justify their situations and are willing to sacrifice nothing.
I think he just found his platform and is hitting hard hitting topics, I wouldn’t say stop them but to put an unbiased view on the problems going on. I think he hopes it stops, but idk about him stopping them since this is a huge difficult problem to solve now.
There’s that moment you realize their social identity is so deeply embedded within these belief systems, they don't care about the actual ramifications.
This is real journalism. I've seen all those VICE documentaries and tens of the like, and nothing comes close to this: providing the pure unfiltered reality. For the first time this did, as it should, give me a reality check. Those in power see statistics but they don't view the raw unfiltered scenes like this did.
Whats the reality check? You don’t like drugs and are terrified of homeless people? You think invading homeless camps and standing over people with a mic while your poster boy tells you his biased agenda is journalism? He briefly touched on where decriminalisation of drugs can work but then titles the video “I went to a city where drugs are legal…”. He’s generalising an entire issue to millions of his followers.
Biased agenda?tf are you 0n? Dude interviewed the people it actually affected, and didn't just "briefly" touch on other cities, he showed what he believed pregon based their system on, and explained why Portland failed but these other systems worked.
yea vice became its own satire. this dude really brings it every week . from epsteins island to portland. no divided bullshit no politics (you can see both sides are drug victims anyway. the over woke and the trailerpark) just the streets and its struggle and he even discussed solutions (portugals programs for addicts)..the most important thing is probably to find the inside guys like kevin who has a rational view on it
That 22 year old broke my heart. I just turned 22 last month, and I spent 7 months addicted to fentanyl. I’m watching this video just hours after being released from a detox facility. I hope that young man gets the help he needs, because it IS out there.

Not crazy at all. It's representative of the state of western politics. There are no politicians that care for the people's interests over their own anymore. The exception proves the rule
Like George Carlin once said politicians don't have a vested interest in something that does not have money in it. Cause if it did you'd see the streets cleaned up real quick

Back in the 80’s and 90’s places like Portland, San Fran and Seattle were beautiful, fabulous places to live. It is so sad that they have deteriorated to such an amazing degree. So glad that I don’t live anywhere near those places anymore. It’s so sad to see what has happened to those places and several others in the US.
I’m 16 and I can’t even imagine those places being beautiful I grew up in this era where I’m shown that they’re shitholes. Of course, geographically beautiful areas, but libs always ruin natural beauty.
The contrast between Drug use in America and drug use in West Europe is STAGGERING! Here in the Netherlands drugs is quite populair in the party scene among youths but it's very well regulated and high quality. It's not legal but tolerated and the amount of drug related deaths are very, very low. So are addiction and homelessness rates.
this is social issue. in europe you dont get prescribed fentanyl based based pain killers. people who got addicted "legally" look for street supplement. or loosing a job in US is harsh. Having a treatment in hospital cost you tens of thousands.. Being on street is somehow easier then when you became basically not responsible for your life anymore. definitely this is induced by societal norms and rules. Safety net is missing too. i am guessing but europe is doing better but if you look in every major city you would find homeless addicts in a crowds but its always adressed in some way.
Tell that to the reatardz at the DEA. Opiate deaths doubled from 2015 to 2023 while opiate prescriptions for pain dropped thirty percent. The dea has nothing better to do than harrass and scare doctors to stop treating pain. Oh. They do have one task they prioritize higher than the field agent war against doctors and pain treatment, field agents buffing their arrest stats to improve their odds for promotion
I live in downtown Portland and what I feel this video fails to show is that not all of Portland is like this. There's still so much to do and see in the city, lot's of cute streets with shops and restaurants, plenty of bike-able streets and pathways, fun festivals and events, etc. Yes, there are some really bad pockets that most people avoid, and I wish the city was doing more about that. I get that this video is about the drug problem, I just don't want people to think that all of Portland is like this, or that we are the only city going through this. We get so much shit as a city, when in reality, every major city is dealing with this issue. You can't solely blame decriminalization on this. Fentanyl has plagued cities everywhere, decriminalized or not. Also, before decriminalization, we didn't have enough police officers or prosecutors to enforce the laws anyway. This is a structural problem in our government. I voted for the decriminalization of drugs because I thought that the city would be opening addiction treatment centers and helping people. They clearly haven't done that. The city, county, and state have over-promised and underdelivered. There has also been extreme mis-management of funds in our leadership. It's really sad to see. They reversed the decriminalization anyway, and not much has changed.
I’m from the Netherlands, Amsterdam specifically. Drug use is pretty normalized and casual here, but you rarely hear anyone is addicted to anything. We have pretty good rehabilitation and homeless programs, so I think that’s why. Portland tried to achieve the same effect without having the same solid foundation we have in my country. That’s why it’s gotten so out of hand. These people needed help in the first place instead of being allowed to use more drugs. It’s horrific.
As someone from Rotterdam, Netherlands, I agree. Think the problem is even less in other places than Amsterdam. It’s ironic how most drug related issues here are from tourists not having the right education on substances or knowing how to use ‘responsibly’.
From the Netherlands too.. and couldn't agree more. It's not "just" making it legal. It's about understanding jail does nothing to solve addiction. Actual help does. A house, food, detox and after care, healthcare. And so on. Here it looks like they used this as a way to just kill of addicts. So utterly sad. But then again, not even non addicts, have this in a lot of the USA. Which is heartbreaking in itself
I was homeless in portland at 18 years old in 2018, it definitely wasnt like how it is now, but i remember sleeping in a tent , sometimes in shelters , but a lot of times i had to sleep on the ground with nothing and it is EXTREMELY cold at night. It breaks my heart to see people live like that.
they still do a lot of good journalism, they showed how Rio de Janeiro in Brazil where im from really is, most of the journalists in Brazil are afraid to even go to a favela and interview the gang leaders, they showed the world what rio is really like besides the beaches and Copacabana
how is this "real" journalism? Literally every major city in the US has the same problems regarding the homeless and drug use in the public. He has done no actual research on the topic. Go look at downtown philly, LA, Cleveland - The same exact shit is happening and drugs haven't been decriminalized there. People are still walking around shooting up heroine in broad daylight. Yes, these are super sad conditions, but portraying it as being caused by the decriminalization of drugs is bullshit. This is what journalism has become and it's fucking sad.
I’ve been clean 53 days it’s been extremely challenging but I don’t want this life for myself. I pray for all the people in this video they need serious help. I’m lucky I still have people willing to help me.
Yeah he's a rare breed all right. That's why he's got pending charges and Multnomah and Deschutes County for stealing money and identity theft that he perpetrated on the homeless people he was claiming to be helping
I’m from Scotland UK just stumbled on these stories. Had no idea that US was this horrific. I have been to America Chicago,Las Vegas, and Arizona at different holidays. Never ever knew this went on it is criminal how can a so called greatest country in the world treat people like this. We have dog shelters that treat dogs like kings. Why is it ok to treat people so inhumanely. Makes me weep for America as tourists we should all stop coming until something is done ❤
I went to Portland for a basketball tournament in a circuit about 2 months ago. I’m 14, and it was crazy seeing the amount of tents and homeless people the second you got into the town. I knew going into the trip that Portland was the center of Nike, so I knew the stores would have lots of cool stuff. I went into the city with my parents, and it was honestly one of the most depressing things I’ve ever seen. You had random homeless people walking around asking you random things, and people simply laying in the streets. To be honest, I would never go back if I had the choice.
some theorize its weaponized homelessness. What they do, they ease all drug restrictions, causing the property market to crash, allowing real estate monopolies to come in and take up all the land for a lot cheaper, then restrict again and bulldoze.
The serial r@pist really hit me, I cannot imagine how scary it is to be woman and homeless, living whithout safety. That person, that monsters, is taking advantage of wournable women and it is heartbreaking and disgusting. I cannot fathom the terror.
Out there on the front lines, taking the time to acknowledge the misery and pain these people are going through. Trying to find solutions rather than ignore, and abandon them like Portlanders have done. The "compassionate" Liberal strikes again. Literally no one has any respect for these people anymore. And why Oregon is about to get a lot smaller for the succession of many counties out, and into Idaho. BYE

I’ve been sober for 29 months. The biggest thing that has kept me sober is ME wanting to actually change. People don’t like being told when they should get sober. I didn’t care about myself before in my 12 years of addiction. But once I quit by my own choice I have never looked back… my new addiction is finding more resources to heal and become better each and everyday.
@@zodiakw8963Being able to take their drugs is more important to them than staying alive. Their brain is toast, it only wants to get the high & nothing else sadly
This is what happens in primitive states like yours, here in Switzerland heroin has been prescribed for 40 years (same thing in half of Europe) no deaths and fentanyl obviously never arrived... Your government should stop fooling the electorate with propaganda and show what really causes the problem with opiates at least…(because there are drugs that are harmful even without cutting, like cocaine, therefore it is not possible to prescribe them since it would not bring any benefit) but for opiates the prescription is certainly the most ethical and humane way to follow (since it saves lives and improves the quality of the same) or you continue to pretend that the cause of the dead is not exclusively the fault of your narrow-mindedness... The problem with fentanyl is that it is a fully synthetic opioid designed to act transdermally (natural source opioids like morphine/heroin cannot be absorbed transdermally) so it is designed to be absorbed very slowly, it stands to reason that if you take fentanyl as you would do with morphine/heroin this is harmful (since it has too rapid an action, taken in another way, therefore not transdermally) the problem with this category of drugs is exclusively placed in the cut practiced by speculators (so it is enough to prescribe heroin or other equivalent opiates such as morphine or hydromorphone) opiates are totally harmless in the long term (overdoses only started to be talked about with prohibition, given that cutting the substance does not allow consumers to calculate the correct dose or know what they are taking) so there are no excuses (the blame it is exclusive of your vulgar policy that deceives you with propaganda) it is no coincidence that these substances are prescribed even to extremely sick and dying patients (let alone therefore if they can be in any way dangerous) with pharmaceutical heroin, therefore pure white, you can get at 100 years even if addicted, you will also not be limited in any way as for those who are addicted these drugs are just a psychic cover (no visible high, just a medicine a psychic cover)
I’m a recovering addict. The main thing I can say is an absolute necessity to help people recover is long term help. You can get someone into rehab, get them a job, a home, whatever, but if you’re not checking on them in 6 months time, and making sure you can help them maintain the improvement, you’re just leaving them to fall right back into the same trappings
Yes, a good support system is definitely necessary. Addiction doesn’t just affect the addict. People are ignorant enough to believe it’s easy just to quit. Withdrawal symptoms are not only almost unbearable, but, in the case of heroin and alcohol, they can kill. As far as others being affected, loved ones are heart broken and constantly worried and strangers are in danger of getting knocked out for a few dollars.
dude risks his life to get homeless people arrested lol like the opposite of what a social worker should be doing. It's a shame he really does care but if he was a bit smarter he couldve been a better representative for the problem rather than just being a mouth piece to amplify reactionary solutions
Kevin is a fucking hero 🙌🏼 I’m so glad there’s people like this out there. These are the people behind the scenes actually doing good in this world - NOT the people on the news.
As an addict in recovery, I always hurt inside watching scenarios like these because I knew my odds of getting clean were slim…and I don’t understand fully how I avoided hitting the drain
Ay bro Im happy that you are doing better and I hope you know how much courage it takes to quit the addiction and I’m proud of you. I hope you are doing well and keep going man!
Same here buddy. Was on heroin 8 years.. got on methadone.. started on valium.. last year got out of jail and just stayed away. Got off methadone abd on buvidal.. Just grew out of it it seems. Strangest thing.
As a somewhat new Portland resident, I have lived in Oregon for 15 years, Portland for about 2 and I remember it was a dream of mine. That dream had been crushed. I was molested by a homeless man in my apartment building last year in clear blue sky daylight in sweatpants and baggy shirt. I’ve seen three people die right in front of me in the past year. It’s horrible.
I live in Portland and my parents went through this for 12 years and my dad went to federal prison twice. They are 3 years clean off of fentanyl currently. Don't do drugs people, they ruin your life and they ruined mine
I'm curious did they utilize MAT to get off or just cold turkey? It seems like areas of the NE have had some success offering MAT therapy in jail so people are already working a program when they transition out. MAT = Bupenorphine or Methadone.
I'm sorry about that man. But I do have a question. I'm a firm believer in the benefits of psychedelics like LSD, Shrooms, and weed. Do you think that the problem in Portland is the drugs themselves? Or is it society? I personally think people can do substances recreationally, but people who ABUSE these drugs mostly do it to do is as a cope for a much bigger mental health issue in the U.S
Its a tragedy. The idea of all drug use being legal only works if you crack down on sellers and offer help for addcits. This shows how bad it is to stop in the middle.
The idea of people using recreational drugs to fuck up their own minds and lives is just absolutely backwards to me. Also if you just allow free treatment for drug use then people will abuse that. They see it as a get out of jail free card without any sense of consequences
@@Devin7ElevenThere’s different types of drugs that are used in different scenarios. The odds of you seeing a homeless person using MDMA or LSD are near zero, whereas the odds of you seeing people passing fentanyl syringes around at a rave are also near zero. Generally the people who end up addicted to opioids have some sort of mental health issues as well, which made them more willing to try it. Free treatment is necessary because the alternative is no treatment at all, at which point drug users become criminals. No homeless drug user is going to pay for rehab, and private rehab institutions tend to be filled with propaganda.
Seeing the young man at the station who has tried to quit 20 times, I was crying knowing he won't last another year if this continues. I feel so thankful for people like Kevin who are trying to help and offer aid.
Tyler God Bless you for giving homeless people a voice. I always hear homeowners perspectives, which are very understandable, but its also clear that these people have all been neglected and need a hand to pull them back up.
How does it happen to begin with? Why are people deciding to start using hard drugs instead of a bowl of weed or a couple beers now and then? That's the biggest part of the problem.

@@WindTurbineSyndrome that is not true, addiction requires regular use, even with the most extreme substances. Fent is a common anesthesia, but nobody is immediately addicted after a surgery. Im aware you said heroin, but it’s basically the same, just weaker. But americas reckless distibution of opioids as painkillers certainly played a role. Fent is a lot cheaper so people eventually switch to it, when they can’t get their hands on oxy anymore.

Herion, fentanyl and acid are legal in Portland? I don't think so. There's just no law enforcement.
Good points I also wonder if the Netherlands still has (modern type) insane asylums?
It seems to me this is what happened since the country wide closing of the facilities.

Portugal worked because Mexico isn't right next to them
They know exactly what they did in Oregon.
They will never fund healthcare bro
Something poor countries cannot afford to do hence why they need to criminalise it

Also, a note on homeless shelters:
1.) It's very common to have all of your stuff go missing at those places. Theft in shelters is worse than on the streets.
2.) Staff sometimes abuse the people at the shelters
3.) When you're trying to sleep in a shelter, it's also very common to hear people having sex or masturbating.
I think that if I was drinking instead of smoking, I would probably still be homeless (and an alcoholic)
The thing most people don't understand about this is most people get into drugs AFTER they are homeless, because it's the only recreational activity that you really have access to.
12:22
People like this are to blame.
13:32
yes, this actually happened to me, but it was a cop who took my ID. I think it was his version of a sick joke. I tried going to the DMV to get a replacement, but they could not do anything for me because I had no proof of identity
17:09
I actually used to do these "nature walks" to try and keep my mind off of being homeless. The scariest thing is when you accidentally find a homeless camp in the woods, and you're unsure if they people occupying are dangerous or not.
i hope you’re doing a lot better 🫶🫶🫶🫶

Except money doesn’t fix drug problems with people that don’t want it fixed.
America has thrown tens of billions at programs, shelters, etc and its worse than ever.
Sometimes you can’t just fix things by giving away free stuff sadly.
A surprising number of addicts prefer to live on streets because they can stay close to their supply and they dont have to pay rent or maintain a house. I was a fentanyl addict and that was my mindset. The less i had to maintain and the less stuff i had that could be stolen the better off i was and the more dope i could buy.

@lostu9257 - Sorry to hear this bro. But happy to hear you’re on a good path, have a home, and you made it off the streets. Good luck with the apprenticeship. You got this. Let your son be your motivation. You’re giving him a good life and that’s reason enough to keep moving forward.

@@datboybobbyoh and other countries dont even allow their pharma to have ad space. Youll never hear an ad for any medication in any other country beyond i believe portugal? I honestly forgot the other country. Their pharm companies arent for profit.
You guys can't blame Republicans because this is a feature of democrat ran cities. Cities that have been run by democrats for many decades. You can blame the government all you want but the problem is caused on the state and city level. They wanted legalize drugs. They wanted to be a sanctuary City. Well there's a price for it.

Portland has kinda always had this issue but it has gotten dramatically worse over the last ten years. I used to love the culture of Portland the stores downtown area etc the drugs and homeless everywhere completely just ruined everything dope about Portland. I used to love to go out with my best friend and go skateboard around downtown p town when I was in high school and go window shop the cool vintage stores etc. now if I go downtown jus to like idk go to a bar and am only outside long enough to walk into a building you’ll either see someone nodded out standing or someone with a needle sticking out their arm while nodded out or someone naked and taking a sh*t on the sidewalk etc. it’s jus all bad and not a place to live anymore. These people don't want to participate in society. They want to do drugs and not work.
this is what happens when you decriminalize drugs WITHOUT rehab centres and other facilities of that sort. the government does not care at all about these people like they say they do. there’s a right way to do this, and this is clearly not it.
Rehab and care would cost money, and the homeless-industrial complex can't be spending money on things that would put them out of business.
Adults should be allowed to do what they want within reason, but going from "drugs are illegal" to "all drugs are decriminalized" without a way out this happens.

In other words they've said "Yes you can do this BUT we are not going to allow you to antagonize, harass or otherwise scare other citizens while doing so." How else could it possibly work? Just legalizing drugs and then allowing them to continue wreaking havoc on the city doesn't work.

@@toximan2008 Well said
@@kakishisfriend1126 Exactly. You would need some type of law enforcement involved or it would be chaos.

A vote isn't going to help. Voting means nothing. Wake up.
@@LogicallyKnotyou have a prime example of how it does in this video, he said 60% of people voted for this law
In uk drug laws are very strict..can even go to prison for personal use…conservatives are very fascist
this is social issue. in europe you dont get prescribed fentanyl based based pain killers. people who got addicted "legally" look for street supplement. or loosing a job in US is harsh.
Opiates and party drugs are two completely different things.
Meanwhile here in the uk everybody has a drug and alcohol problem.
I feel like we need monthly updates on Kevin to let us know he is still ok!

@@kuakuyh I mean the issue with the netherlands isnt people from there doing the drugs. But the trafficking that starts in the Netherlands.
Yeah this was rushed and lacks some version of harm reduction. I hope people don't radically swing and do another War on Drugs

It breaks my heart to see people live like that.

how is this "real" journalism? Literally every major city in the US has the same problems regarding the homeless and drug use in the public. He has done no actual research on the topic.
I agree to a point, but they have to learn to take responsibility for their own lives
Not anyone's job but the addict.
Aint nobody has time for these wastage
Yes, a good support system is definitely necessary. Addiction doesn’t just affect the addict. People are ignorant enough to believe it’s easy just to quit. Withdrawal symptoms are not only almost unbearable, but, in the case of heroin and alcohol, they can kill. As far as others being affected, loved ones are heart broken and constantly worried and strangers are in danger of getting knocked out for a few dollars.
Agreed but it’s sooooooo expensive to help long term.

I'm sorry about that man. But I do have a question. I'm a firm believer in the benefits of psychedelics like LSD, Shrooms, and weed. Do you think that the problem in Portland is the drugs themselves? Its a tragedy. The idea of all drug use being legal only works if you crack down on sellers and offer help for addcits. This shows how bad it is to stop in the middle.

It's only a tragedy b/c u not doing anything about it
