Making this as a reminder for myself. - Avoid Doubles if you're unexperienced in pixel art. - Avoid jagged lines that come from not thinking more methodically about your lines. - Outlines can have a big impact on how people percieve your pixel art.
You are a spectacular teacher. Seriously. I loved how you showed "examples" vs. "nonexamples" for each mistake. You took the time to explain why a pixel placement was "good" or "bad", and then followed up by applying that to Sonic! What an awesome video, Mort! Thank you!
The heuristics (number rule) you propose for curved lines is real gold! It actually makes a lot of sense, when you think about interpolating gradients of smooth lines at discrete points (if you would reason about it more mathematically.
bro the jaggies part helped me understand circles and curves in pixel art so much better. Thank you! I'm going through your tutorials preparing for my first game jam!
Thanks for the tutorial! It was very useful and helpful! When I'm trying to create pixel art, sometimes it would look off due to the jagged lines or the outline doesn't look right. So, I would have to re-work it. This tutorial will make things easier for me. Plus, this will be very useful when creating perler art as well! :)
Great video! The curve technique is actually something I've been doing since forever when working with pixels or voxels. People often wonder how I'm able to make curves without guides :-P but this video perfectly explains it!
After deciding on pixel art for my first video game, since I’ll be a solo developer, I really wanted to find some good resources on YT to help me. This video really helped me understand how to properly draw pixel art, and I couldn’t believe the detail that actually goes into this art form! Thanks for the video, and I look forward to seeing more!
A tip for math nerds: If you want to draw some type of curve, such as an arc of a circle, that can be expressed as an equation, such as x²+y²=r², you can literally just plug in that equation with the x and y values of the pixels to make a mathematically perfect pixel representation of the curve. Just remember to fix any unwelcome emergent jaggies.
Thank you so much for these pixel art videos. I've always adored pixel art, but could never get the hang of it, yet your videos provide such great tips to use that I think I may give pixel art another try. Awesome work and thank you for the advice!=)
Hey man! I just wanted to say thanks and good job on your videos. I find them really entertaining and helpful. I just started learning pixel art and you've helped me a great deal! I look forward to seeing more!
personally, I think doubles can work when trying to show the darkness of an area. If the whole piece uses doubles for a thick dark outline, that can look cool too - if that is your style.
That tip about adding the one extra pixel for a sharp edge is fantastic!!! However, in the case of Sonic's shoes, I think the round edge fit the subject better
Based on the example at 5:12 I sometimes did something like this: 4;3;2;3;2;5;8 to get edges on the surfaces and have some sort of rug-ish surface and I was wondering, is this the wrong way to draw rugged surfaces like this. Is there a better way to draw those surfaces?
Awesome video! I've done pixel art before and these are definitely things that people do. I've never needed to outline anything before, but that's a great outlining tip.
I am incredibly grateful for this. I wanted to learn this stuff in college, but the western education system is a joke now, and they taught me nothing. All they did was take my money, and my parents money, and waste my time. I remember one time 2 of the tutors just started screaming at me, one in each ear, for no discernible reason. I never did manage to find out what they were upset about. Probably got blamed for something I didn't do. Why would anyone put up with all of that when you can just find tutorials online and teach yourself. Watching this video cost me nothing, and I learned more from it than I did from several years of 'art' 'education'. And nobody screamed at me. If you make a SubscribeStar account I will start sending you money.
I learned how to program in html, css (kinda),c# and gdscript(the godot game engine's language) from tutorials and apps on my phone (I would suggest sololearn). I'm currently 12. And I help my sister (18 in college) with c++ Also what was the ending
Just found your channel, and im learning how to do "professional" pixel art for my game! Im hoping by watching your videos I can learn to make pixel art better :)
I miss these pixel art tutorials, though granted most of us watching this channel aren't beginners. Still, I find that I can learn from time lapses and observe techniques that artists use to do different things (shade skin tones, design tile graphics, workflows etc.)
I just fuck around in mspaint and I already knew the first two tips just intuitively, right down to counting pixels and making sure there's a good sliding scale pattern.
I have a confession to make. I actually kind of like the way the "jaggies" look? not like that 2-2-2-5 part but the 2-1-2 part, it works really well for making larger smooth curves- because if you go in the 1-2-3-4-5 pattern like the one that was illustrated here, it doesn't make the pattern of a circle, it makes a pattern more like a hyperbola. It looks fine at the size shown here but at larger sizes it would make a kind of... i suppose lumpy curve.
Sometimes jaggies are completely unavoidable in isometric. For roofs and other upright triangles both sides have to have a different angles due to the perspective. Which means outside of one relatively useable angle the majority of non-jaggie angles are restrictive and often unusable. It tends to look a lot better to use more reasonably angled jaggies than to avoid them and go with an unfitting but smooth angle. Not to mention all the other completely valid reasons jaggies in perfectly straight lines may be necessary in isometric art. It is important to make the lines have a consistent pattern to them, though. Something like 1 pixel then 2 then back to 1 then 2 again. If they have a clean pattern to them they end up looking more clean. i.imgur.com/7ncEP6D.png
i was trying to start learning pixel art and got confused halfway through because it looks kinda weird you know while thinking all of the mistakes must be at the beginner mistakes tips video and i'm right :') thanks for the info tho!
Like I mention if you know how to use them go for it! Looks awesome when done right. Sadly a lot of beginners are unaware of pixel perfect lines and just grab a brush and paint like my sexy whale I drew
@@MortMort Oh yeah, sounds like something I do lol. The style of the doubles looks very cool,I wish more people spent time drawing art in this style,it's pretty underrated in my opinion,I only saw a few games using the doubles 🤔
What program or application do you recommend to those of us who are starting in the pixelart and do not have a desktop computer, we only have a tablet or phone with Android system?
That Toad scream startled me.

There are times to use doubles for sure. One I can think of is at corners if you want to draw a rectangular object that's tilted at an angle.

Could you make a tutorial on how to make pixel art with animations in mind for it? Like say for a game and how sizes or colors would affect that?

I actually like using doubles (sometimes) as it can be a great bold outliner for certain sprits.
They're handy at corners to emphasize a sharp angle
