Suggestion/Request: If you've never watched the mini-series "V: The Original Miniseries (1983)" and "V: The Final Battle (1984)" from television, I'd recommend it/them if you like sci-fi. It's the show that got me interested in sci-fi.
Did you notice the Terminators arm reaching for Sara at the end is the focus for research at Cyberdyne in T2? (as well as the broken chip)

Back in 84 this movie came out of nowhere. There was no hype at all, but within 2 weeks of it's release it seemed like everyone at my high school saw it at least once. Arnold really got noticed for Conan but this was the film that really made him a star. It also launched Director James Cameron.
And Arnold played a Tank with big guns for the rest of his career.

@@Rocket1377 yeah he got much better with his English and wanted to do stuff like Twins and Kindergarten Cop to show that range. My favorite of those was him parodying himself in The Last Action Hero.
Yes! As someone who was born in the 80's, I can concur that phonebooths did infact have a copy of the phonebook. You could check the number of the person you were trying to reach, or just look at the map pages, if you wanted to find some place. Really handy in a time that did not have smartphones, google and map apps.
The phonebook contained the telephone number and the street address, as you can see at the 4:50 minute mark. It also has the famous Yellow Pages section for commercial contacts.
They had them in the 90's also
They did this movie on a 6 million dollar budget. The ingenuity that was required to make this film on such a tight budget is mind-boggling. Its in the National Film Registry at the Library of Congress because it is a classic.
It's insane what they did with the budget, especially the stop motion work they did with the Terminator. Even though they dropped frame rates, since it's a physical prop, it still looks better than a lot of CGI done today. It deserves it's place in the National Film Registry for sure!
@@ShanWatchesMovies And not to mention that the futuristic tank and flying HK were actually miniatures. The HK was hung by wires. The tank was a couple feet tall. Rear screen projection was used to give the illusion of a giant tank.
@@JSSTyger I knew that they were all miniatures but had no idea that they used a rear screen projector to make it look bigger! I need to rewatch this with the directors commentary. The behind-the-scene info are facinating!
@@ShanWatchesMovies And the car that the Terminator broke into at the start was just a random car parked on the street and they just sent Arnie over to it and told him to smash the window in and look around inside and do it quick before the cops turn up. That is how low the budget was. The also didn't have any permits to film on the streets.
@@ShanWatchesMovies I bet you missed Bill Paxon (RIP) as the punk with Blue Spiked hair in the opening sequence, where Arnie took their clothes. IMHO this is by far the best film, the plots/story lines matter more to me than the way the film looks on screen. This was the best of the films plotwise. In the 70s/80s we didn't worry that much about the ay things looked.
Watching Terminator 2 after the first is so much more powerful, because it explains Linda Hamilton's reaction when first meeting the T800.

Fun Fact: The sound effect for Arnold's .45 Longslide is from the remastered DVD version. The original theatrical and VHS versions used the same sound effect as Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum.
4:40 Well, the Terminator didn't blow away the gun shop owner "for nothing". Arnie needed them guns and Terminators are known for being notoriously short on cash.

The main reason it killed him is because it's a killer robot. If you are in it's way (or have the potential to get in the way of it's mission) it is programmed to respond with the simplest and quickest solution.
Thats a lie. They could just start a normal life, call themselves Carl and get a regular job.

A very cool touch involving that photo of Sarah: Kyle said he always wondered what she was thinking in that photo and at the end of the movie when the photo was taken she was thinking of Kyle!

12:35 did you notice that Sarah got herself a dog, just like Kyle did have in the future so that he can spot terminators more easily?
Actually it was a mobile lunch. Dog makes a fine meal.

Personally I think the second movie is better, but this one is almost as good.
@@Soulsphere001 I think the second film is a great film and an inspiring one with its special effects. For its budget its money well spent to give the audience a thrill. Why I feel the first film is the best is the storytelling about good versus evil, its a love story. Okay the film had limited budget restrictions mainly with the Terminator taking his eye out. But the film is very inventive. From its acting from all the main actors, its score to its direction. I just like the edginess and its honesty and the film has got heart. I know most people love the second film and all for good reason. That film has been enjoyed and inspired audiences, but for me without the first film we wouldn't got the second film. The sequels 3 to 6 hasn't got the heart and trying to please a family audience and makes the films forgettable.

Watching this movie first makes T2 better esp. the early part of T2 with Sarah's fear of the Terminator.
For those who had watched T1 first, watching T2 for the first time was even more mindblowing, because we believed that Arnold was the bad guy again all up to the plot twist in the guns n' roses scene. So yes, T2 is my favorite part, too. 😊
I don't know where you were when T2 came out, but it was absolutely spoiled for anybody who saw the trailers. Which is a damn shame, because the movie itself is set up to obscure that the T-800 is there to protect John up until the fight in the mall.
My favorite line/scene in this movie has always been when Kyle Reese tells Sarah "It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop... ever, until you are dead!"
I'm kinda jealous. I wish I could watch the Terminator for the first time again.
It's amazing the transformation Sarah Conner makes from part 1 to part 2. She's such a badass is part 2.
I'm willing to argue this was the best of the series, it just has that bleak darkness and horror that T2 is missing. T1 is more cult Sci Fi/horror, T2 is more of a popcorn Summer blockbuster with a brain.
I'm inclined to agree...as much as I live T2 there's something special about the original....it's tech noir twist on film noir and I love the exposition in this film it's very underappreciated! I also love Salvation but forget about the others....I would love if Cameron commissioned a 40th anniversary theatrical release of T1 with all deleted scenes etc but not digital rather on original film......now that would be a treat🤤🤤🤤😁😁😁
Terminator should go back to being Horror. Cast an unknown & intimidating person.
In a way, T2 is partly a rehash of T1...
Kinda like Aliens. That's how James Cameron makes sequels.
I'm 71 and an old-time SF fan.
T1 was the best science fiction.
T2 was the best SFX.
1975 - 1987 kicked out some iconc movies/franchises.-- 1975 (Jaws), 1977 (Star Wars), 1979 (Halloween, Alien), 1980 (Friday the 13th, Empire Strikes back) 1981 (Bladerunner), 1985 (Back To the Future), 1986 (Aliens) 1987 (Predator, Robocop). Just a small sample.

Explains why he didn’t like him. He’s a real asshole in T2.
The iconic shot of the Terminator dying was an insert shot of crumpled pieces painted aluminum foil and a red light on a dimmer, all sandwiched between two pieces of foam. An effects guy was just out of shot pushing the pieces of foam together and another guy was blowing smoke from a cigar through the aluminum.

It is weird that you watched T2 first and then T1 later. You wouldn't have enjoyed the twist at the beginning of T2 (discovering that Arnie is a goodie in the 2nd film) in the same way as most people.
Back in 1984, I was hanging out with one of my buds at the local 7-11, pumping quarters into the Gauntlet video game machine while he told me about this film.
Twenty dollars later, we ended up renting Terminator, and watching it until 2 AM. It's been one of my top twenty movies ever since.
Reading comments like yours really makes my day. Must have been an amazing experience back in '84!

A cool thing about bridging the two movies - there's a deleted ending where it turns out that the building that they were in was a Cyberdyne Systems building, and they find the chip and the hand that eventually appears in T2. You can see it on youtube.

@@ShanWatchesMovies It's funny because you think ok, they pulled it out of their ass for the sequel, just because they had to, but no, it was there from the very beginning. I didn't know about it till maybe 15 years ago.
@@dosnostalgic they should have added the scene to the first film. Would have made more sense in the second. Even though you can figure it out on yourself given the effort. Maybe an intentional Choice by Cameron?
@@ShanWatchesMovies It was the original ending, which was more in style with post-Carrie horror films that was traditional at the time. He then decided to replace it with the more meaningful ending that ended up in the movie. They had no money left at that point. He talks about it on the commentary track saying how they shot the final plate of Sarah driving towards the storm with no official permit and just three people, and almost got busted by a cop.
Again I had no idea that had anything to do with the budget! Thanks for the inside info! Maybe it's time I watch it again with the commentary. Would love to know what was going on behind the scenes since they had such a limited budget!
There's a deleted scene/bit where after the ambulance drives Sarah away the camera pulls out to show that the building they were in was CYBERDYNE.
The first punk Arnold kills was the main antagonist in "Cobra" with Stallone
For 1984 the effects hold up pretty well. Imagine how freaked out we were seeing Aaarrrnold as an Android. The role of a lifetime. Only movie that freaked me out worse was the original Alien.
OJ was going to play the teminator in this movie but when they as the studio said that They could not see him being the killer.

Edit: Oh, if you haven't seen it before, the director's cut of Terminator 2 has some cool extra scenes. If you haven't seen it, that could be a good excuse to rewatch it.

Yup. Pay phones usually had a phonebook attached. Although sometimes the pages were ripped out or the whole book was missing.
it's a T800 "Model 101". It was a step up from the T-600s from the beginning of Salvation. The T-800 was in production in Salvation's timeline which was the CGI Arnold that was released at the end of the film.

I love Salvation contrary to what most fans say.....love the story and timeline and mix of practical and special effects. Imo it's the ONLY terminator film worthy to make the franchise a trilogy!
Model 101 is the flesh. Model 102, 103 or whatever number is a different "person".
Saw this in theaters when it was first released. From what I remember, it was a huge hit. There was no confusion & the story DID feel pretty complete.......standing on its own....without the need for any sequels at all. I believe there was a 3rd cast member who appeared in 'Aliens', who had a small role in the police station. Lance ( Hendrickson? ).....who played the good android.
Thank you for your comment! Yes, it works as a standalone film but T:2 did the first one justice, Just like Aliens did Alien, which is pretty rare in modern times!
It was John's stepmother from T2 that played the space marine Rodriguez in Aliens
And Lance Hendrickson was a cop in Terminator and the synthetic in Aliens

He’s a very underrated actor
Michael Biehn was also great in Tombstone (Johnny Ringo) and The Abyss (Lt Coffey) - both great movies.
gotta love the way history kinda repeats itself across the first two movies. beyond those it starts to feel like ideas are merely being recycled.

Michael Biehn was directed by James Cameron again in The Abyss and Aliens. He also had a supporting role in Tombstone and The Rock.

Finished watched aliens and just read both comments! I recognized Biehn immediately also Paxton but In the Aliens reaction I didn't recognize paxton as the punk rock leader lol
Watch out for One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest today and Aliens in another day or two!

@Apathetic Apparition No, he wasn't...common misconception. He was thrown back into the bars and knocked unconscious for sure, but the Terminator was only interested in clothes. It's likely Paxton was merely knocked out. Since it isn't definitive, I'm going with knocked out.
My mother liked this movie (enough so that T2 is one of the few movies mom actually took me to see in a theater). So The Terminator is one of the earliest movies I remember being aware of as a child. And when I watched it on VHS years later, I was blown away; what a good movie. I will admit, T2 is the greater film; bigger budget, better effects, Cameron and Arnold were more mature. But it is debatable which is the better film. The Terminator is certainly the more efficient film; a little gem that started a franchise that refuses to die.
My mom took my best friend and I to this film opening weekend and it haunted my dreams for days. I loved it!!!

Kyle told her that he always wondered what she was thinking about in that picture, and it turns out she was thinking about him when the picture was taken.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the film, I would *highly* recommend watching it a couple of times, as there are a Lot of little things (which you may have mentioned in your full review) which often go unnoticed... To give you a few:
When Kyle is in the alley sawing off the stock of the shotgun, note how he has his trenchcoat positioned: It is creating a screen between him, and the mouth of the alley. To any observers on the street, they would have thought he was just a homeless guy either going through the trash for scraps, or perhaps going to the bathroom, but not realized that he was modifyinging a weapon... For him to think to do that, that is the situational awareness of a professional soldier...
When the Terminator pushes the guy away from the phone booth and looks for Sarah's name, note where his Left Thumb is pointed: John Connor. He clearly had a secondary directive to potentially kill the John Connors as well, should his primary objective to kill all the Sarahs fail...
And as a bonus, but this is more a speculation on my part, rather than a confirmed inclusion:
When the Terminator is in the gun store, the guy asks: ''Anything else?'' The Terminator's AI clearly interprets that as a full question ''Is there anything else you would like?'' because the Terminator then muses ''Phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range..." I don't think that the Terminator was actually making a genuine request for a PPR, I think the Terminator was trying to make a joke: Asking for something which he Wants, but knows that he Can't have, because of the era, but trying to make the joke as a means to blend in, because he *is* an infiltration unit...
Not making a joke. He's traversing an iterative loop from lowest distance personal weapon(that must exist in 1984 or he sees on the shelf) increasing in capability until one that is not available as a lot of pre-war records/knowledge were not in his files. What would that particular gun store have and leaving with a sufficient collection to set out on his directive to kill Sarah. It is just like his algorithm to get a list of Sarah Connors in LA from the phone book and iterate through that list killing them. It was lucky for John's Sarah that she was last and with Kyle's knowledge from John he could go directly to his Sarah.
If you want a couple really good underrated 80's family movies monster sqaud, goonies, and little monsters.
something rarely spoken about is rhe great symbolisms in this film ie- modern machines reminding Reece of the future ones for their size & power, as he awakes from his nightmare vision and later car plant robots in the same environment as the stripped down endo skeleton, The disolve shot of the fire to the profile of sarahs face as the scenes change great editing.
At the time it was the best robot film since west world (although it did borrow ideas from 1973s West World) as did robocop
even for Schwarzenegger this movie was a surprise. I remember reading somewhere that Arnold once refered to the terminator as a "shitty movie" when he was doing other parallel stuff and had to go shooting a scene for the terminator.
I would think that after "Hercules in New York", he would have been able to recognize a good film from a bad one. This first one being really really bad, this one being a masterpiece. The score alone gives me goosebumps everytime I hear it. The machine sounds and the melodic techno, intervining to create a synthetic heartbeat - fitting to a killer machine from the future.
@@SimoExMachina2 From what I’ve heard of the filmmaking process for Terminator, I can see how an actor might think it was going to be shitty, before seeing the final product. Stuff like being told to smash a random car window isn’t likely to inspire confidence.
Fun Fact: James Cameron originally intended to cast O.J. Simpson as the Terminator but the film studio wasn't convinced he could play a killer.

THE STORM IS COMMING - I loved this Shakespere reference to THE TEMPSET ( in German. DER STRUM -the storm ) at the end of the movie
I got to see T2 at a drive-in in Vegas when it first came out it was incredible!😊
back in the day you couldn't see thru his Gargoyles to see his eye is not missing, but in this remastered version you can clearly see he isnt missing a eye.
I have met people who criticized Termimator 2 for having a lot of scenes that were direct mimics of this movie, but I see as a statement about how history repeats itself, and there are some things that can never be changed.
this is still the best Terminator movie in my opinion. the story details are what impress me.

Many people don't realize that this movie was actually based on a true story. Actual Terminator endoskeleton used to be on display in Times Square Toys-R-US.
The psychiatrist you didn’t like is the same psychiatrist in the second and third movies (but I only care about the second.)
Reese fell in love with her picture. That's why he volunteered to go back. She fell in love with the man that was saving her. Not hard at all.

T-800 - Endoskeleton combat chassis
CSM 101 - Arnie's face/body.
As was said in Rise of the Machines "That was a different T-101."
Note that the T-800 we see attack the resistance base is not Arnold, it's a different, albeit body builder sized, individual.
Remember, Kyle mentions "The 600 series had rubber skin." Which was of course paid off, more or less, in Salvation when we saw the larger bulkier humanoid terminators.
It's one of the issues later films create. The first film doesn't have this issue. The first film, to me, is actually the strongest of the series. I would say that Terminator 2 is of course the most successful and probably the most polished of the entire series, but for me the first one has a lot of heart that the later films lack. This was a movie made on a thin budget with huge effects demands. You can see the blood and sweat on the screen.
BTS story: The very final shot of the T-800, where the eye turns out, is made with shaped aluminum foil, two pieces of foam core, a Christmas light, and cigarette smoke. Low tech, on the-cheapest, but they nailed the lighting just right and it absolutely sells it. James Cameron was living off of 1$ cheeseburgers to save money. They filmed several scenes and shots without permits, including the very last shot of the movie which almost go them in trouble with local law enforcement.
Great reaction videos. I'm fast becoming a fan of your videos. I really appreciate that you put in your detailed analyses after watching the films as I've seen many people who watch a film and end it very quickly after giving their on-the-spot reactions. It's so much more interesting to hear thoughts on acting, production, editing, music, story, etc...
I remember Arnold on the Tonight Show promoting the film before it came out. He said it would change his career, boy was he right.
The doctor at the police station is the same one that's treating her in T2. Hamilton was married to Cameron, at the time.
This guy is a very, very good film analyst.
The Terminator cost about $6.5 million. Terminator 2 was about $100 Million.
This makes me even more impressed with what Cameron did with the tiny budget of The Terminator!

Before this, Cameron did "Piranha 2." This was his breakout.
Cameron staked his career on this movie and it paid off; leaps ahead of other 'star wars' like movies that had watered down sci-fi. And yes, most phone booths had a phone book for the city region they were in. Also, hot-wiring cars in that period was super easy, just find the ignition and ground wire; I used to do "phone phreaking" in that era as well, a simpler time.
1:35, sadly, I still hold a grudge for Cameron's endorsement in trailer of GeniSys.

@@ShanWatchesMovies There are no Terminator films after T2. You'll notice this a lot with great 80s film franchises. The rubbish that came later.

The arm of the T1 left over from being crushed is the one that spawns the future Terminators
Cyberdyne Systems also managed to salvage the cpu from the Terminator's head. Without that, they wouldn't have been able to create a new Terminator.

Couldn't tell which version you've watched but in the extended cut the final fight is shown to be in the skynet factory hence why they have the arm and microchip in T2
Have you seen the Mad Max series? If you are a fan of action movies, they are pretty interesting, especially the 2nd film - The Road Warrior. Fury Road, made recently was made with mostly practical effects and is one of my favorite action movies ever.
I've only watched the 2015 one. I got a lot of recommendations for this one, its already on the list! Thank you for your comment and suggestion!

Another great reaction!! I saw this in the theater when it was released, the big screen helped the impact! 15:40 - 16:15 John isn't shown because he hasn't been born yet. Interesting perspective, given you have seen the others following this one. SUCH an epic movie for sure...a little trivia (if you didn't know already) Linda Hamilton's identical twin sister appears with her in T2 and passed away last month.

Micheal bean in a few Cameron movies, it surprises me on how many people he uses in multiple films just pay attention and you’ll see it
There is not always a direct correlation between time/budget and the quality of the film. This movie and T2 do not directly go towards this point call, but... Where money, or lack thereof, also comes into the process is that creators are forced to concentrate more on those aspects which do not cost an arm and a leg. I'm sure you've heard that the typewriter and script writing can be the most cost-effective piece of equipment and process in filmmaking. As a graphic designer, I found that it can actually be helpful when you're only given a limited amount of time/resources. It makes you focus. One can become confused when told you may have all the money and time you want. Best. Leo.
That is a very astute observation that I never considered before. Time + Money doesn't necessarily equate to a good film, it's whether the director can execute his vision effectively and efficiently. Very interesting indeed!
They should of just stopped after the first 2 instead of dragging the franchise through the mud.
Was always my favorite since I was a child idk why I watched it so young but it was/is still my favorite film
When I was an '80s kid in the '80s with a mullet, I thought Michael Biehn was beyond rad. He's always been for me what Burt Reynolds is for Sterling Archer. As for the "T-800" versus "Model 101" confusion, the "Model 101" is the "Arnie" model, whereas the "T-800" is the endoskeleton. Presumably, the Model 101 can be molded over any suitable endoskeleton (T-800, T-850, etc.).

A funny fun fact about this movie is that O.J Simpson was almost cast to play the role of the terminator. If you know anything about O.J Simpson you’ll know this be ironic.

also lance hendrikson was cast to be the terminator. hes one of the main coppers instead. if you watch a few of james cameronn other films youll see a few actors from both terminator and terminator 2.

The Intro of T2 is meant to imitate the intro of T1, so you would assume the T1000 is a human like Kyle Reese & it's only until the confrontation that you realize that Schwarzenegger is the good guy.
Terminator and Alien are similar. First movie of each is more horror sci-fi. Sequel for each is more action sci-fii. Both sequels equal the originals. Which is super super rare.

In the early 90s, Bethesda made a great game based on this movie as it is in the future, and they nailed the atmosphere and overall feel of the world.

True words spoken by a master filmmaker. To me cinema is art. Speaking of Tarkovsky, I haven't watched any of his films yet. Only the George Clooney version of Soraris. I'm assuming his version is way way better?
@@ShanWatchesMovies Tbh I don't like Solaris all that much. Most Westerners will recommend a combo of Solaris and Stalker as an introduction to Tarkovsky, but I (as a Russian) would recommend Andrei Rublev, Ivan's Childhood, and The Mirror. And then the rest. I will say that even films of his that I personally don't like are still worth watching. The man had a special understanding of the medium of cinema.
And speaking of Clooney version of Solaris, I think Stephen Soderbergh is an amazing filmmaker with an incredible body of work, most of which is absolutely worth checking out.
@@dosnostalgic interesting about Solaris. Always heard it to be a classic. But I definitely will be checking out Ivan's Closet and The Mirror. I heard highly of those films. I really like a director who fleshes out his character and takes his time and Tarkovsky seems like on of them!
Soderberg on the other hand is great although I've only seen his Ocean's series, Solaris and Erin Brockovich. So there are many of his great films I haven't watched yet!
@@ShanWatchesMovies Tarkovsky's Solaris is superb but, like Kubrick's 2001, you have to be in the right mood to watch it properly. It's one of those films that requires a conscious effort to sit down and give one's full attention and patience.
It's so slow paced that I think one reviewer actually called it a "collection of still images;" on the other hand, Tarkovsky himself supposedly said that the pace of the first act is deliberately slow so that "all the idiots" would leave the cinema before the film really got going.
I remember one reviewer saying mockingly about Arnold in this movie being perfect because he had so few lines.
