My main problem with fraymakers are the characters, they are fun and unique, sure, but 5 characters is insanely low and the modded characters are incredibly inconsistent quality wise to make up for it, I am aware making characters is obviously very tough and time consuming so I don't expect them to drop 5 other characters at once, but they can't expect us to stay on a game with only 5 base characters either, I am really hoping once it leaves early access or even now that updates may be more consistent that this is less of a problem, but as it is right now I can't see myself playing this game in the longterm even if I'd like to

A big issue is that a lot of the characters that are assists would have been far more preferred to be on the main roster. They had so much to work with and the only real fan favorite on the main line up is octodad. Its good to give the obscure fellas a chance, but like, fishbunjin? Was this really necessary?

There's a saying "You only get one first impression" and Fraymakers unfortunately completely blew theirs. Game development isn't easy at all but I'm sorry, the game launching unfinished with not even it's base roster done, no idea who any of the other characters are going to be, when ANY of the other content is coming that was promised like Fraybets, and taking nearly a year to get ONE character out the door of their unfinished base roster is just a bad look from the outside looking in.
Yeah, there are mods and the workshop, but unlike Rivals workshop, the Fraymakers workshop doesn't feel like some extra fun to have, it feels like a crutch to keep the game alive. We have to make our OWN content while the devs try to even finish the base roster. It feels like we're doing THEIR job. Plus, like other points raised in this video: There is no reason to play this over Rivals of Aether. Heck, even Indie Pogo launched with single-player content. All you can do in Fraymakers is VS bots, go online, and that's it.
Unless there's a big dramatic shift in the next year, this game is going to die just like every other failed attempt to make "Smash Bros. but with Indie Characters"

    • @gargator4888
      @gargator4888 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I think the base roster leaves a weak first impression as well. You have two characters that are already from two complete platform fighters with much of their own content. Fishbunjin and Orcane are cool characters, but people are hoping to see popular indie characters adapted into a platform fighter, and unfortunately, many of the characters are relegated to assists despite a lot of them making for possibly interesting characters. It's just another issue on top of a plethora of issues that killed momentum for the game's initial release.

I’m my opinion, this game has the potential to be one of the best fighting games ever. The problem is that people, including myself, don’t like to wait or do things over and over again. The slow updates and lack of content atm is what is hurting its reputation. Maybe once a new fighter gets announced it’ll get a big rise in popularity…hopefully

I feel like fraymakers needs to
    A: fill out their roster,
B: fill up the custom game rules menu,
C: Add some kind of casual gamemode or even simple missions to complete.
D: Add some kind of progression, maybe unlocking hidden assists, a character color based leveling system or anything else.
    then finally
E: Get a larger streamer/online personality to promote it and widen it's audience.
Fraymakers has a solid foundation, but neither the reach nor the content depth to keep people from being willing to invest in the game. Lowering the price tag may get more players, but will not solve the aforementioned issue. Maybe the team needs some more members to speed up development so they can get to step E faster.

Something I thought of that could help with Fraymakers’ longevity is to add actual single player content and just in general stuff for casual players to do (In my comment on the previous video about the current state of the game, I said that McLeodGaming managed to nail the balance between casual and competitive appeal with SSF2 and I know they can do it here).

I'm waiting to play the watcher. I expect quite a few people like me to wait while just checking the community until they get the character they want (or other modes of play such as story mode).
In order to achieve both the number of users and a good community response, various updates at a level that fits the current price seem much more appropriate than lowering the price. Therefore, isn't the speed of development more important than the promotion of the game? At least, I think so.

Personally, I think the biggest problem is the lack of content. Launching the game in early access was good to just get the game out there so people at least know about it, but it’s been hurting the game in the long term because it’s literally incomplete.
A good comparison would be to MultiVersus. That game also launched in early access and while it had a huge amount of players at that time, it just as quickly lost those players due to a lack of polish and a lack of content to keep people playing.
I understand that the Fraymakers team is small and I’m not going to blame them for anything (not to mention they’re also developing for another game at the same time, that game being Super Smash Flash 2) but it’s no mystery why Fraymakers is in this situation.

  • @PopeDope69-420
    @PopeDope69-420 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Regarding the high interest for the game, couple with equally high dissatisfaction… I think people really want a PC platform fighter to mirror Nintendo’s. Especially in the way it pulls from other IP. People want it to succeed and Steam Bros is exactly what they want.
Rivals has also been a working studio for years. They’ve got a lot more experience
One last point- Fraymakers says in the Early Access notes that the game won’t be ready for two years. I think we should actually be pacing them by their own metrics, not our own.

Honestly, my issue with Fraymakers isn't even the low roster, odd character choices, or lack of content. My issue is that it doesn't stand out from Smash or its look-a-likes. Look at Brawlhalla and Rivals, they took the basic elements of Smash and add their own flare to it. Brawlhalla has a weapon system, while Rivals focuses more on stage control. Apart from the Workshop scene and maybe the cast of fighters, there very little changes from Smash that make Fraymakers stand out.

The people who think the game should be free, I think, have been spoiled too much by Fortnites system being so popular and every game wanting to copy, It quite literally wouldn't work for a game like this (We've already seen a plat fighter crumble just this year while having the f2p system, what would make you think small indie devs would succeed with it?)
I think Fraymakers main issue is just the lack of content, and incentive for people to play every day for long periods of time. The one thing you can do in it is just fight, no events, no minigames, no story mode. There's barely any roster (which is understandable, but still it does hurt the game) and I think some more indie games with big communities being fighters would help getting eyes on it. It's very similar to Rivals but it hasn't grown yet to have that games content and popularity (I would personally disagree with that game being the standard though, Brawlhalla is currently the consistently biggest non smash plat fighter, if anything that's the standard to most people)
Right now I think, just like Rivals, Workshop is carrying casual appeal, but Rivals has been doing that for so much longer so most people are more interested in that games stuff. Fraymakers foundation is SUPER good, I just think it needs more extra content to keep people into the game for longer

    My steam review of fraymakers:-
I was playing some single player with bots but the AI is kinda weak even in 9 difficulty...also there's some issue with sprites getting stuck on platforms, there some lag while playing, my computer can run assassins creed origins very well but this game lags sometiems, rivals of aether runs so smooth. Also there's a lot of quality of life stuff missing unlike rivals, for example, there's no random btn in custom content section while selecting characters, and the custom workshop stages are in a different section and not with the stock stages in the same place unlike rivals. Please make these changes. I feel the modding scene of this game is dying, make this game the best and support the modders so that this doesnt happen. At this time i cannot recommend this game, its not addicting enough like rivals

As someone who’s followed Mcleodgaming and SSF2 (creators of Fraymakers) since I was in middle school - college grad now - the failure of Fraymakers is astounding.
    1. Enough people have complained about the starting roster of a literal handful of characters, one of which wasnt even added until months later. But lets talk about the playable characters. Be honest with yourself: do you think the modern day average consumer has played ANY of these titles aside from Octodad? Or even HEARD of them? If you’ve been around a long while, theyre for sure familiar, but no ones gonna buy a game for CommanderVideo. Zoomers have no connection to these characters
    2. Building off that, the regonizable indie reps that ARE here are Assists - characters you summon to perform a special move, and then they vanish. For guys that were in the Smash community for decades, surely they’d remember that seeing your favs relegated to Assist Trophy status was considered a fate worse than death. So why is this the case for the most popular indies on this roster?
    3. As a pixel artist working on his own game, Fraymakers artstyle looks like a nightmare for a small team, let alone a single person, to animate. Unless your art team rivals 90s Capcom, something of this caliber is too ambitious to execute at a fast pace. SSF2 had this problem as well, and while everything looks really pretty, this unfortunately means that releases will take ages due to how detailed and time consuming the art is.
    4. The art style also cripples the hopes that Fraycreations (is that the name of the char creator?) could ever carry the game. Mechanical issues with it aside, the average Joe is not going to create any sprites on par with this artstyle, leading to an unsatisfying clash of styles, designs, and animations that are more trouble than its worth.
    5. The release timeline is laughably bad. I know people who were following Fraymakers who were surprised when I told them it released. Months for any kind of update for a game on death’s door may as well have hammered the final nail in the coffin.
    6. All these problems could maybe be avoided or lessened if the competition wasnt there - but it is. People would rather play Rivals of Aether than spend a dime on this game. RoA has more community content than FM could ever hope to dream of. Say what you will about gamefeel, theres far more to AoE that catches the eye (simple artstyle, larger roster, bigger community, etc.) that the typical consumer prefers.
Conclusion: Fraymakers is dead. Theres no saving it dawg. Theyre unironically better off taking it down and relaunching a few years later once theyve made this a game that people would want to play.

Honestly there is another issue, though kinda small. When compared to rivals, the workshop content is honestly very poor and lacking. Like think about this, the most popular and downloaded of mods for the game..... are just ported over sprites and characters of smash flash 2. Almost no actual interesting or unique characters that are original, just ported sprites.

As someone who (tried) to make a character for the game, there’s certainly a lot that can go wrong, and fraymakers kinda failed at fulfilling the character creations.
First, let’s look at what Rivals did in comparison. RoA’s workshop was probably a revolutionary thing to have, and it was perfect in every way. Using GML to code your characters, sprite limitations to force you to be creative with your sprites, and just the whole process feels fluent and fun in general. The amount of actions isn’t very large due to the simplicity of Rivals in general, so it makes the process simpler.
Fraymakers’ Workshop creation is a fuckin mess. The overall style of Fraymakers is too detailed to replicate, and this forced us to take shortcuts and just use different art styles (or downright just rip them from other games) that doesn’t match FM’s art style. Next, Fraytools, the creation tools honestly feel like your typical crappy modding tool. There’s a lot of points where the clunkiness of FrayTools just hinder the overall flow of development. Then we have the actions… Which is probably THRICE as large as RoA, making this process even more tedious. And the coding part? Oh my GOD, IT’S THE WORST. One of the most crucial things is a documentation of all the different functions and variables that can be used for your character, and they fucked it up big time. A blinding white screen with only the name of functions, no descriptions for 90% of it all, and the overall Layout makes it an eyesore. I’ve never asked so many times in the FM’s Discord in my life, just to figure out how to make a single change. Haxe isn’t exactly rocket science, but coding the character somehow is.
All in all, FM’s modding capabilities are pathetic compared to RoA. If they can pull themselves together and fix the tools and the documentation, then yeah, i can accept that. But for now, this is abysmal.
