I'm really happy they cut this. I love the movie to bits, been watching it at least half a dozen times each year since it's release. It was always clear in the movie, for me at least, that he doesn't age. The whole point of the heart of a star is that it keeps you youthful. Rather than eating it, he has it through love. "No man can live forever, except he who possesses the heart of a star". Him ageing makes no sense, and it's kinda creepy.

JulZ 97 I agree, I like how they did it in the movie. In the book Tristan dies and yvaine rules eternally

    • @jane1975

@JulZ 97: Tristan is still mortal where as Yvaine is not- even Tristan's Uncles [ the Ghosts] are mortal.

However, there is a difference between ethernal youth and ethernal life.

I would have to disagree. Yvaine, was not human, but Triston was. Him aging was realistic and makes sense to me, in my opinion of course. However, I too am glad they cut this scene. The "farewell to my children," was well acted out by any of the characters. AND, I personally never liked the competition of retrieving the stone. Because even with Triston saying "we're doing it my way, [you still have to find the stone to be queen/king]." This can bring out the worst in someone still, where they will go as far as they can to ensure they receive the stone first before anybody else - meaning deceit, hatred, negativity.
So it's better to leave the ending open to the viewer, to make their own story of how the kingdom was ruled after they parted. I never saw this alternate ending until now, and I always believed that Yvette and Triston grew old together, and when they were at a time where they felt their health is slipping, and they are soon to pass away, they lit the candle and went to the universe to became stars.
As for earth, the children banded together to create a democracy or some sort, and ruled the kingdom together.

      @rashwinnagaraj7484 5 ปีที่แล้ว +29

Tristan should have been youthful when they left I really felt it would have been better and again that same race to retrieve the stone , it could have been avoided. their sons and daughters didn't kill anyone it shows the way they parented and taught them to love each other. So they themselves could have divided responsibility of kingdom between themselves and all could have ruled.

In the book Tristran (Renamed Tristan in the movie) dies of old age and Yvaine rules as an immortal queen, but the author Neil Gaiman prefers the movie ending over the one written in the book, but in the book Tristan isn't a human, he's a fae and therefore that explains why he survived A) Yvaine using her powers to kill Lamia and B) Why he becomes a star at the end of the movie. He's already a magical being.

The movie ending was nice. The book's ending was more beautiful and meaningful.
It ended on such an achingly beautiful note: "She says nothing at all, but simply stares upwards into the dark sky and watches, with sad eyes, the slow dance of the infinite stars."
With that one simple sentence, you're left to wonder what she could be thinking - about how long 'eternity' will be, for her; about whether she has regrets and if she feels guilt for having those regrets; about whether she continues to love him, or loves him less with each passing year.
The movie ending sews things up neatly, and the viewer never has to think about anything more. Years later, I bet readers still put themselves in Yvaine's place and try to empathise.

    • @gelchert

@@Raximus3000 Not really. Whoever is able to locate a single gem in an entire kingdom, while competing with half a dozen others at least is a perfect way to have the new monarch prove they can organise, plan, and that they know their kingdom. Also, whoever the new monarch is, they will have loyal servants willing to help them, since there won't be a direct competition for the throne, so able participants can still serve the kingdom. There's a reason why fratricidal kings in the real world rarely ruled for long, or stably.

Hardly in the real world it was looked down upon while it was the norm to avoid bad blood. Also if you have stones that literaly tell you anything if the answer is a yes or no, then it hardly becomes a competion of skill, not to mention if someone tried underhanded methods and won it would still create bad blood.

Good job they cut it. It's awful.
Why are they old, when supposed possession of the heart of a star makes you immortal? The witch got young again with the heart of a star, so why is the king old?
This is the issue with many films.... lack of basic attention to detail.
This is a film I really like (book too, though very different). It was fine so well.
In fact the only detail I am not happy with is how Tristan has the power of knowing exactly where everyone is in Stormhold. If they hadn't eluded to it with the scene "How do you know ....I just do" it wouldn't have been an issue. But they did, then failed to allow an explanation.
This scene would have made everything worse.
Good job I understand that everything is an evolution. A process. Everyone should remember this lesson. 🎉

Y'vaine was unable to return to her mother the moon and her sisters the stars. Babalyon candles created miracles, they couldn't teleport a person or star for that matter. Yvaine slept in the highest tower of the castle with an open roof ceiling to look among her mothers and sisters with burning longing. Truthfully, she lived in agony for eternity.

I used to think the actor for Tristan was an awful actor. But there he starred in Daredevil, and he was phenomenal in that.

BUt i have already thought of the fact that Yvaine does not age while watching the movie so I have already suspected that this would be the deepest ending of their love story yet I ignored it because I wondered how would tristan look and now I really remembered the reason why I have ignored it after watching this :-)

I wonder why this extended part scene of the ending was deleted from the ending of this movie of (StarDust)?
The reason why I am wondering is because I really like seeing this part that I have never seen before; Now when I saw this movie in the theaters it was great, but I think that the ending might of been even better with this extended scene part left in the ending of the film.

Part of the reason is that he was not supposed to age because he had the heart of the star

"This time we'll do it my way. Whoever is the next to hold this jewel will be the new king or queen."
But, isn't that exactly how the last king did it?

This is kinda like the end of the book, cause Yvaine is inmortal and Tristan gets old. But in the book Tristan dies and Yvaine became the inmortal queen of stronhold

I like the ending in the movie better. In the book, she rules the kingdom forever after he dies. But it’s like... the movie one does a good job of having an ending where it looks like their love goes on in the stars.
