    Definitely not the same ul kit that is all over TH-cam but very well thought out! Thanks for sharing!

      Haha - nope. I do weigh stuff and try to only take what I need. But I like to be comfortable and overly prepared for anything and am willing to carry it if I have to. I can see reducing as I get older, but do enjoy the gear I have for now. Thanks for watching!

    Your gear list review is better than Andrew Skurka's Ultimate hiker's gear guide! It is far more practical for our hikes in the Canadian Rockies; so many good tips. Thanks for sharing your hikes also! Planning for the Brazeau Loop in 2021 after watching your youtube video. Did you find that trail well marked or would you suggest purchasing something like the Garmin inReach?

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, thanks! I really appreciate that. Have you seen my most recent one - a 10 day lighter load out for the Rockies? I've learned a lot... With regard to Brazeau, the trail is exceptionally well marked and I can't imagine needing anything for navigation. That said, it's always nice to have an emergency beacon or a two way communicator if something were to happen.

      @@HowestheHike Thanks for the tip on the Brazeau. I did watch 10 day lighter, very good also. I enjoyed your first gear video as lots of information on keeping dry and keeping warm, something we had trouble with on Skyline this past August.

      My pleasure. And yes - on Skyline your are exposed! Hard to beat it though!!

    Good video. Nice to see what other people are carrying and why. What does your pack weigh when fully loaded? Say...include everything but water and food? Any idea on average weight you carry for food per day? Thanks!

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Bob! I am glad you enjoyed! While my thoughts on having hike specific gear is the same, my thoughts on weight have changed since this video due to an injury and my age. I recently uploaded a couple of videos on this. To answer your questions, when I do the south boundary trail and the northbound trail I was about 45 to 50 pounds all in. I carry about 1.5 pounds of food per day that gets me about 2000 cal. When I did my last hike in 2020, a video called The Quiet Hike, I was at 35 pounds for 10 days in the Canadian Rockies. That includes 10 days of food and weather gear, because I wanted to see if I could do it with a ultralight backpack. And I could. I still love my Osprey Xenith backpacks very much and I will hike with them again. But after this video I certainly reassessed my needs for a long distance trip.

    I'm an Ursack guy and had raccoons eat my pepperoni the one time I didn't bring an Opsak. The system, it seems, works.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep - the opsak is critical. The allmitey won't let small animals get through, but is a fair bit heavier...

    Can you put a link to the toe socks to Amazon or some other site, I dont mind if you put it as a referral link.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't have any referral links - and am not sure what country you are in. So, simply Google "injinji toe socks" and you'll find them quickly!

    • @Canuckiwi
      @Canuckiwi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HowestheHike Im also in Canada. I was just referring to the fact that if you mention stuff you use in your videos then maybe people would click on the link in the description to support you rather than buying directly from Amazon. I ended up buying them for my WCT trip next year.

    Great video. I just got the Big Agnes Mystic UL 15F. With your experience what would you say that bag is honestly good down to without having to really layer up?

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Honestly - I'm a cold sleeper and would say maybe 30F. And, you really need to inspect for down shifting too - they had quite an issue with it for a wile.

    Love your videos. Keep up the good work! How is Tigerwall ul2 holding up? I am in the market for a new tent and curious about the floor durability.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It’s actually holding up really well to be honest. I do have the ground sheet for it which I use a lot of the time depending on the terrain. It’s an excellent tent.

    HI, would you be able to tell us what brand of waterproof socks you have. We have a pair purchased thru amazon that we are not very happy with. Thanks for your informative hiking videos, great tool for trip planning.

    Question: I’ve thought about the dry bag for the tent for a while now, what litre size of dry bag do you find is adequate? Obviously we can’t go into the stores and check them out as of late, and it’s a bit hard to gauge the size online. It’ll be for an MSR 2P, tent and fly.

    • @HowestheHike
      @HowestheHike  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use two, 8 litre Sea To Summit bags. I like two because it only the rain fly is wet, I can pack the other tent stuff in a separate bag.

      I love watching your blogs. I’m looking at a 2-3 day SC palmetto trail mixed with the foothill trails a friend is piecing together for me. He hikes that are all the time. So it will be nice not going in semi blind.
