    There was a game back in the 80s called Dragonstrike where you could ride good dragons and use the dragonlance against the chromatic dragons in Krynn during the War of the Lance. Awesome game for the time. It was first person view and flew like a simulator. There were even manticore and death dragons. The breath weapons were all accurate to all dragons, too.

    We played the Dragonlance campaign series in high school back in the 80s. None of the players had heard of the books. We played two characters each. I say played, but really it was the most railroaded campaign I've ever seen. At times, the DM was literally reading 'our' dialog out of the novel he kept under the table. Once we had finished the campaign portion through "Dragons of Autumn Twilight", he allowed us to read the books. Hooked. Immediately. I read "Dragons of Winter Night" in school the next day, hiding it under the desk or a notebook. I played Sturm, and I had 'accidentally' seen the Elmore artwork depicting his death and had to know how "I" was going to die. The campaign died of course, because we knew all the right decisions to make and he figured out we had all read the books.
    I've re-read Chronicles and Legends over many times since, and most of the prequels, sequels, side trips and lore. Krynn is the world I compare all fantasy to, and the Companions of the Lance are my mental archetype of every class. I was really looking forward to new material from them until SOMEBODY had to go and screw that up. THOSE guys, whoever THEY are, must be total Aholes.

    Great timing on this AJ! What with current events and all. I still DM a 2nd Edition game that we have currently been playing a Forgotten Realms campaign for 11 months now. In this time, the PCs have been transported to a homebrew isle of terror in Ravenloft, they have been in space, introducing Spelljammer, and I introduced many aspects of Dark Sun in the Anauroch Desert. We are currently playing the 2nd Edition Dragon Mountain box set which I have placed an item needed for the campaign in the main treasure hoard. Dragon Mountain hops between worlds and planes of existence. I was kicking around the idea of running some Dragonlance in our campaign, but after the lawsuit, I am definitely doing it. Dragon Mountain is going to hop to Krynn with the PCs inside of it. It might not be an official thing, but the Dragonlance setting will live on in home D&D games. I have the 1st Edition Dragonlance Adventures campaign sourcebook (Written by Weis and Hickman), as well as the 2nd Edition Tales of the Lance box set and the Time of the Dragon box set (Probably won't use in this campaign). So I'm well equipped to let the PCs bumble around Ansalon for a while as they figure out how to get back to the Realms. I'll throw some very Dragonlancey stuff at them, like Draconians. Also, the party mage is going to be forced to take the Test at the Towers of High Sorcery in Palanthus, or be executed as a renegade mage. I ran a Dragonlance campaign 30 years ago or so and haven't been back to that world since. It'll be nice to go back for a little while.

I only ever got my hands on 4 of them, a spring, autumn, and winter one and then another written from the point of view of the draconians. I always wanted to read more, at least the summer one. That was about 25 years ago lol.

    • @jtjames79
      @jtjames79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I believe the adventures were written before the books. because a lot of the characters personality traits were based on their players portrayal of them.
      Apparently Raistlin's whisper came because all the players we're either actors of some sort, or experience D&D players, and while everyone was yelling over one another trying to claim the spotlight, Raistlin's player just started whispering. The entire table fell dead silent to hear what he was saying. So they put it in the book.
      So basically the first three books were a condensed campaign journal.

    That is actually the exact things that happened in one of our campaigns. After beating the big bad of that arc we ended up getting transported from the Forgotten Realms to the Dragonlance setting due to magic funkiness. It was a ton of fun since unlike the Forgotten Realms, only the DM knew anything about the setting. It was literally a whole new world for us players and our characters. It's from one of the 2e books but I don't remember which. We ended up finding one in a treasury room in an old ruin.
    Luckily we never ended up being forced to use it.
    We kept it around just in case because at the very minimum it was an incredibly rare and powerful weapon that didn't need to end up in the wrong hands.

      The weirdest thing about Dragonlance is that Law and Chaos were not alignment principles until near the end of the Age of Despair. There were only Good, Neutral and Evil. The spawning of the Father Chaos changed that, along with a lot of other things.

    The D&D background lore is probably the best expansive fictional universe. It beats 40k, MTG, Battletech, the Marvel and DC cosmologies, Fate, probably Wheel of Time, arguably the Cthulhu mythos and many of the other universes it takes inspiration from. All that rivals it in greatness is The Legendarium itself and real world mythologies.

    I am very glad you covered this, as Dragonlance can really be a fun alternative setting, and the legendary weapons that inspire the name are really cool! Still, this does bring me to one of my own personal problems with it; getting the most out of a mount like a Dragon. I'm sure almost as many players dream of having a character ride a Dragon, as they do killing one, but I struggle to figure out how it makes a good configuration for combat? Powerful dragons are really big, so I'm not even always sure how using a weapon from atop one is meant to work, and so often, it seems that it would work better if the rider was an archer, or spellslinger, rather than wielding a sword, or even a Lance, with reach. It just seems like the Dragon is best served to stay aloft, and breathe foes to death, while darting around, waiting for that breath weapon to recharge, so it seems like the rider would be hard-pressed to contribute,yet Githyanki Knights, and Dragon Riders of Krynn, keep focusing on melee weapons. Oh well, they are still awesome, as are the mighty god-forged weapons they use to lay low evil!

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, I would imagine dragons really just fly themselves and the rider is effectively just the siege weapon gunner. (make Beep Boop noises, you are now basically an Astromech)

    Now this is my bread & butter!
    So technically, Theros forged imperfect Dragonlance, because he didn't use the hammer (game mechanics give those a +2) vs true lances which need both the hammer and the arm to forge (mechanically means a +4).
    Also, as far as planes-hoping goes, bear in mind most clerics lose their powers unless they convert the Ansalon gods, the mages will the rogue until they take the test of the towers, Druids will be powerless (normally - I homebrew Druids as being a specialized nature God cleric), and the veil between planes in this area is super thick, making it super hard for players to get into, and even harder to get out of!
    Finally, if players are over lvl 18, the gods will attempt to smite them or cast them out to another prime. As they see mortals of that power to be a threat to them.

    • @OMentertainment
      @OMentertainment 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@gargoyles9999 it's not a 1:1 situation. Dragonlance is the opposite of a power gamer setting, and everything scales with that, including how gods in this setting works. Honestly, being over 18th lvl doesn't always make you a worry to the gods, especially if you're simply a martial class. If you were familiar with what the story of the Kingpriest of Istar, or Rastlin Majere and his fight against Takesis, you'd understand its a lore/story issue. Don't dismiss it simply as a result of a character level anyone playing from lvl 1 almost never reaches anyway.

  • @Greenscyth22

    Mounted combat is cool, but I’ll never understand why mounts whom are more intelligent or powerful than their riders allow such hinderances. I can respect a dryad getting a ride to the nearest stream from is Unicorn friend, however riders can become inconveniences to more elite mounts. Wading into combat atop a Red Dragon is only possible if the rider has several resistances to fire, and is ready to get crushed if the fights becomes purely physical. Only spell casters should ride such mounts as they would have less trouble attacking from such positions. I assume that’s why only the most epic level characters can even acquire a mount like a dragon.

    Ok super random question but it is dnd related. I was going to post on the far realm video but it is so old I didn't think anyone would respond. So where exactly did the Obyriths come from? I mean I've read another dimension basically and that they existed before the Gods, but does that mean they come from the far realms? I mean they are obviously lovecraftian. I was just curious if they were related to the same kind of areas that mind flayers and what not would come from.

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2
