    354,800 miles on my 03' Accord no transmission issues. 07' Odyssey over 230,000 going strong. Had a 93' Civic with 287,000 and sold it only because we purchased the Odyssey. Only Honda's for my family. Had several other Honda autos no major issues just lots of miles. Next purchase will be the 17' or 18' Accord Touring Hybrid

    The two transmission choices will be the new 10-speed developed in-house by Honda and the 9-speed ZF 9HP, which has had its share of problems. I'm leaning towards the 10-speed in hopes that if there are problems with it they will be handled quickly by Honda.

      LOL interesting how this is an Odyssey video and comment and folks replying with Accord transmissions lasting a long time. The Newer 4th Gen still too early to tell, bit some are starting to fail. 2nd Gen was crap and had class action law suit failing anywhere from 70-90K miles, 3rd gen earlier models had issues through 2007, 2008 had slightly different transmissions, mine so far doing OK, but my long time Japanese only mechanic says can push to 170-180K miles if you change fluid religiously. Not much beyond that. So no not all Hondas last forever. Honda has invested significantly in their new transmissions, so I'm hoping the newer transmissions will improve. Hope they will handle their long standing issue with noise and engine mounts too.

      The more gears, the better performance and mileage. More gears allows the engine stay at a lower rpm, but still get the same performance.

    • @yingcluk
      @yingcluk 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Making the gears and clutch ring thinner could also mean they receive higher stress proportionally compare to thicker ones. I am not sure if this is going to last as long as older thicker ones. There's also some uncertainty for newly designed thing ( doesn't matter what it is, from software to hardware ), and Honda's auto trany isn't as reliable compare to Toyota even that might have been changed, but I am just going to wait to see. I ain't buying new stuff like this especially new Odyssey now cost USD $30+k.

    The 2017 vs 2018 weight reduction spec sheet they show @9:00 says "EXL total curb weight", yet the 10 speed automatic is not available in the EX-L. I wonder if the weight they show is for the 9 speed that will be in the EX-L, or is just showing what the weight will be when they inevitably move the 10-speed lower down in their trim levels in future model years.

    Very informative video Jason, but just a suggestion for future videos. When you introduce someone as a subject-matter expert, such as an engineer, designer, etc., you should introduce them by their first and last names, not first name only. It's a small thing but it would come across as more professional. I saw that their full name was given on-screen as they were being introduced, but you should state it for the viewers as well. Just my 2 cents for thought.

    Looks like a solid van but the transmission leaves me wondering how long will it last. The real engineering flaws Honda always builds is duel radiators which don't cool well enough and spotty electronic modules from other oem's. The electronic steering isn't anything new but works well it was featured in the ima hybrids and the s2000s. The selling point here is new tech of the transmission and uni body simplicity.

    Great vid Jason! It's amazing how much engineering goes into these vehicles. Nice to see the cutaway and the structure, chassis and new transmission. Too bad the great new 10 speed automatic transmission will only be reserved for higher trim levels. Regardless this 2018 Odyssey will be king of the minivan hill. What is the word on the upcoming 2018 Accord, they really seem to be keeping it on the DL. How will it look, will there still be a V6 option or likely an I4 turbo....?

    With Hondas track record for poor transmissions, this new one worries me. 4 more gears with the same dimensions as a 6 speed means more heat density, which means parts wear faster. Unless honda has worked a thermodynamic miracle I wouldn't be surprised if the first few years of that transmission suffer major failure rates. Granted transmissions failing due to poor cooling and clutch failure are nothing new to the Odyssey line.

    • @almondao
      @almondao 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They used to use lght truck transmissions. The Gen3's were basically light truck transmissions. with 2008+ being more reliable than 2005-2007. Forget the 2004 and earlier ones, they die regularly below 100K miles. The Gen 4's were bad, but there were some cases of failures but not as much as the Gen2/3. Also Road noise and engine mounts were a common problem. Oh and one more thing those pesky nylone door rollers that cause the sliding doors to jam. Not sure if they still have those for 2010 and newer.

    • @dagger197dgforza
      @dagger197dgforza 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why would you not take that new found extra space and added one more gear. Then you could add clutch material and increased fluid capacity to increase liability with a little bonus in fuel economy.

      i drove and own odyssey since 1995
      1999, 2002, 2008
      and many Honda Acura from civic to accord to Integra Type R and GSR etc
      i can say that DOHC is way better, unless you have a really light weight stick shift like my 2010 Fit
      the torque just isn’t enough for SOHC
      Hybrid makes perfect sense if Honda can get more powerful electric motor in

AWD and a safer side impact design...Behind driver and passenger hollowed out wall frame u can lean back through with the seats and strengthen side impact odds only safety weak point.. It's super safe except side impact test. after watching they're crash tests it's the only thing they really lack in safety....A off road sporty type minivan next for Honda ODD??? Humvee like?

    Did you ask about cylinder deactivation for fuel economy? We have a 2010 and due to the eco mode (cylinder deactivation) it consumes a ton of oil as it needs to lube those cylinders that don't have a spark. Ours uses up a quart of oil EVERY 3k miles and Honda said it is within its normal parameters. I cannot conceive the idea that a whole quart of oil in 3k miles being burned as NORMAL....

    • @robertheinkel6225
      @robertheinkel6225 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      tradersato My 2012 has the cylinder deactivation, but burns no oil. Your dealer is feeding you a line of bull. The cylinders are lubricated from the bottom, and no additional lubrication is required with that feature. I normally can go 9,000 miles between oil changes without adding oil ever. 80k mileage currently on the Odyssey. Most manufacturers consider one quart of oil every 3,000 miles to be acceptable. I worked with GM for 5 years, and they had the same problem on some vehicles.

    Those motor mounts look exactly the same as the one in my 2005. They are difficult to replace and very expensive. Lucikily i was able to find non-oem ones that were a fraction of the cost. It is my only real gripe about it. Other than that the odyssey is a great vehicle

      Problems with Honda's 4 speed autos? Total nonsense. I purchased new a 1991 Accord that went to over 350,000 miles on the same transmission. I can't tell you how many trips from NJ to Las Vegas one of my kids drove it to go to school. The only transmission I know of that was faulty was their early 2000's new at the time 5 speed auto. I purchased new an Acura 3.2TL. Acura swapped out the bad tranny and put in a new one. Currently the car has 228,000 miles on the replaced transmission. Honda in fact did help, they extended the tranny's warranty to 7 years and 100,000 miles.

    I"m skeptical of that new 10-speed transmission, more moving pieces and now lighter than previous generations - How? Transmissions take a lot of abuse (power and torque), and only the most durable materials should go into the manufacturing of the 'gears box' for reliability. The overall package of the vehicle is appealing, but this transmission is worrisome Only time will tell I guess, I'll be on the lookout for the reviews in the years to come.

    HondaPro Jason, You have failed to address the new front Aluminum control arms, on the Pilot, Ridgeline, and Odyssey. These new control arms are drastically different than past models. They have gone from strong cast Iron or Steel, to Aluminum arms that were pretty good sized, but these current flat type arms look better suited for a Civic, and what's the point of the removal of the two portions of Aluminum, the inner being quite large. How much weight could this save vs the loss of rigidity, a few ounces. HondaPro Jason, if you read this, please find out the benefits of these control arms, and their strength vs steel.

    Now give us this in 100% electric variant or at least with 100 miles of all-electric range and it would be the car to have!

    lmao that the Odyssey will get the 10 speed auto while the Acura lineup gets nothing of that for 2018. More proof that Acura is a joke these days.

    Still got an interference engine. I'll take a few less horsepower for a non-interference motor, after all, it's a van not a race car. Want to give your kids whiplash, buy a sports car

      My 99 Accord V6 had 253,000 miles when I traded it. No issues. 98 Accord we have also has 190k on the original.
