@@rapatacush3 Not sure if you've seen my comments on this somewhere below, but what's awesome is that I hadn't seen Ray's version until just a few weeks ago. When I look at them side by side, it's crazy how close we imagined it based on the books description. Pleases me greatly, and I really wish he got the chance to do it properly, it would have been amazing. He's a real influence to me becoming an animator back when I was little!

WOW!!! Brilliant, ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! When I first read the story, I was terrified during the part where the martians grab the curate, and search for the narrator. I always imagined it was me in the dark, just out of reach of the searching tentacles, trying my best to remain silent as the grave. Watching the martian closeup like that, and seeing it stare straight at me, I actually froze and held my breath! I was back in that moment of true fear again. WOW!! Cannot wait until the next chapter! WELL DONE, AS USUAL!!

Wonderful work yet again. The highlight for sure is finally getting a peak at the Martian, voyeuristically spying it feasting on a poor soul. The expression it has, the way its skin and muscles move is brilliant.
You’re really spoiling us with this series. You don’t disappoint!

Always good to see you reddalek! Very pleased I'm seemingly getting it right. I've said this a few times in the comments, but I was a bit nervous about how fans of the story would take my Martian. I know a lot of people have conjured images in their heads of what they should be, and they're rather iconic, even though they've been portrayed in many different ways, but I was inspired by the books description mainly.
The coolest bit to me, is that I did all this work and only near the end did I find out that Ray Harryhausen had given it a shot too. When I saw it, and the parallels between our interpretations, it made me super happy. Not quite the same, but we'd clearly seen similar things in our minds from the books description.
Thank you again for watching, I really appreciate the support and my growing family. I hope I can continue to entertain as we dive deeper into the Martian abyss!

Thanks Kai, really appreciated. Ray's designs have come up a lot in the comments, and I'm happy to say it again. I didn't know Ray had done a version of them until near the end of animating this segment. It blew me away how similar our designs were, and I think that is a testament to the description in the the book and the image it conjured in the mind.
If it's a spiritual successor to Ray's work, well that makes me very happy because he sure inspired me as a kid, and is without doubt one of the reasons I became an animator all those years ago.

@@ClockMaster_3100 Well, actually, there is a super subtle detail at 6:02, and you'll have to slow it down to see it (it got a big blown out by the light, something I meant to fix), but he pulls a blanket from the back of the truck over himself just before the Handling machine grabs the side of the truck. So he's kind of hidden, but the camera is left out.
It's a bit of an irony that this detail was a bit obscured, because it took a fair bit of work to add it. But it is there. You can see the Martian start to pay attention to the man under the blanket right before the horn blows and calls him away. Raven was most lucky, and I think maybe even blew his cover. The martian seems to have noticed him.

I just caught up. Absolutely, stunned. I cannot believe how good this is. No hyperbole. I have read the book, heard the Orson Welles Radio Broadcast, seen both movies, listened and watched various versions of Jeff Wayne's musical, and I even own the Japanese manga adaptation. In terms of atmosphere, this one has left me in awe. The music, the sfx, shadows, perspectives, impact, it captures the feel of a calculated, horrifying invasion so freaking well. I absolutely have no words for it. Frankly, you understand exactly what made the original story so haunting in my opinion. This story stands out even among modern alien invasion story because of this atmosphere. Not just coming to destroy mankind, but to bend us completely to its alien, mysterious, unearthly will. A similar feeling I got when listening to the Red Weed track of Jeff Wayne's version. A sense of otherworldy terror as everything you know about your world is turned... red and desolate and enslaved.
If you haven't seen the Japanese manga adaptation before, I have a couple videos I made with some of my scans.
Take all the time you need my friend. You've gained another fan.

I've actually not seen the Japanese version. I may have to hunt it down. I've actually had a fair few recommendations over the last year for various WOTWs follow ups etc, and probably a few mentions of the Manga, which I fully intend to look up once the series is done. But I kind of decided once I really started to get into the series, that I'd avoid any further influences beyond what I already knew, as I didn't want any ideas creeping in from other versions and accidentally copying. But once I get finished, I'm certain I'll be most busy catching up a bit!

After watching this twice I feel compelled to leave a comment. I have greatly enjoyed this series so far, and this part has completely exceeded my expectations. I've really appreciated your re-imagining of this story, and how you've still managed to keep important elements from the book.
I love the choice of how much of the martian was revealed, it really capitalised on the suspense built through the previous videos (episodes? parts?) and nails the horror aspect of them and their appearance. When the cylinder opens in the book and the Narrator comments on the "intensity" of the martian's eyes, that line really stuck with me and my imagined image of their appearance. To me, this aspect has been translated perfectly in the video. The way the martian regards its next victim within that wreckage made my hairs stand on end, it was chilling in really visceral way.
All that rambling just to say well done on this series, they've been fantastic to watch, and keep up the great work! :)

Love it! Thank you! I'm so glad my intentions and inner feelings(?) of the Martian have come through. He was a tricky beast to animate! I absolutely love hearing reactions, it's my favourite bit, and makes all the work totally worthwhile. I always want to be in the room with the viewer to see the reactions. I'm rather hoping someone does a reaction video at some point, because that would be really fun to watch.
Yes, regarding the other versions, I'm trying to honour them (because I'm a massive fan of all of them) but also make it my own. War of the Worlds fans all seem very astute at noticing the references which is also great! Clearly you're one of them! :D
I keep retelling old stories, but this whole series began as backdrop videos to a small stage play of the Orson Welles radio version (adapted to be set in the Midlands, UK though). So, it's beginning is very much seeded in that version.
But as the channel grew, and it seemed to find an audience (I never expected), I started to dig much deeper into the ideas from the book, and also the 53 film (as that is a favourite of mine). I think it'd be impossible for them not to influence me, though it's certainly becoming it's own thing.
It kind of writes itself, and I just have to find ways of capturing it. It's a really fun project, a dream project really, and it's great to share with everyone. Until I started the series, I had no idea that there was such a strong and lovely community around it.
Anyway, I type a lot! So I'll leave this here, but thank you so much for watching, twice(!) and the great comment, very appreciated. Have a fantastic evening!

This is incredible. This video popped into my recommended yesterday and I've been hooked. I've been through every video, and it's nothing short of a masterpiece. From the cylinders and tripods to their laser eyes, the strategic destruction of the electrical infrastructure, and the harvesting in Birmingham.
I'd love to see more car/vehicle chases in the future, sort of comparing our latest technology of the time against theirs.
Another thing is how well you've blended H.G Wells's novel and slightly more modern 1934 Britain into the perfect alien invasion setting. Furthermore, I do like how you focus more on the mystery and terror of the invasion and less on the war and front line battles.
Again, this is great work so far, and you've earned another subscriber. 😁

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Great feedback, thanks Adamr :D It's funny, but I'm not really a big horror fan, so it's weird to me how I ended up making it so horror orientated. My natural inclination is more to sci-fi, but the two are very close I suppose, and an Alien Invasion such as this would be horrific! Very glad you're enjoying it, and really great to have you on board!
So welcome! It's also a really lovely community too, and everyone is really into the story in it's various guises.
I'm a big fan of all the versions too, so I guess I draw from that, but I want to see it really explored, a bit how the book goes in deep. It's such a strange scenario, that you kind of want to see what's going on everywhere and what the Martians are doing, even if it is alien... or more so.
RE: "I'd love to see more car/vehicle chases in the future,"... yes me too. Originally, this episode was going to have a much longer chase sequence, but the work involved in recreating historically accurate streets became exhausting. Which is why we ended up where we did. But if that hadn't happened, we might not have had the fun Martian sequence, so it all works out.
But, I do agree, and if I can figure out a more suitable environment without so much modelling work, I'd like to have another bash at it. So hopefully your wishes will be fulfilled.
Horror aspect aside, I do want to have some solid battle sequences in the future too. A lot of people have expressed an interest in seeing them, and I know it's something I want to do too. So I think there will be all kinds of things coming up. The thing is, even the battles will probably be pretty horrific too. War is horrific :)
So lot's to look forward to. Great to have you here and join the party!
Thanks for the great comment, and see you at the next one!

p.s. I did just catch your question re: Ray Harryhausen, but I guess you might have seen me answer that elsewhere. But in a nutshell, no, mine was inspired by the book description. I think Ray must have been too. I only saw Ray's version a few weeks back, and was very pleased we had similar visions. Ray is a legend!.
I think if I'd seen his version, it might have made me change course due to the similarity, but I'm glad I didn't now. It's a nice to have connected to another version of WOTWs... even if it didn't get made.

I've said it once and i'll say it again, this is becoming the best adaptation of wotw ever. First, it manages to do something other adaptations fail at, making the Martians feel like a military force. While some movies make them move and act in formation, this adaptation makes them feel like a military, with coordinated attacks, destroying designated infrastructure. We even get to hear their communication system. Speaking of which the Martians look fantastic, they look like they've been pulled straight from the book, yet i do love how they have an actual body, it makes them feel more realistic and the ay they feed is so gruesome, i loved it. I also really like the end scene where we see the cage making the red weed out of the bodies, these two last points make me understand why i love war of the worlds so much, the aliens don't care about us in the slightest, they don't want us as slaves or experiments, they want us as food and they brutalize us for it. Amazing, keep up the good work.

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Thanks Marco. I'm really glad you're getting my take on it, and I want the same things as you when I'm making it. I want them to make sense, even though quite alien, there are ways to do things. I'm trying to have a logic to their actions, and even though it's alien and weird, it's hopefully still kind of recognisable. I'm trying to weave the ideas Wells put out there into some kind of realistic situation. Wells, in his time must have had a fantastic imagination.
Really glad you agree on the body aspect of the Martians. I added that, because I wanted to give them more physicality. Somewhat recognisable as similar to man, despite the differences. I want them to have a presence.
It's really pleased me that I've had such good feedback on them. It can be quite nerve racking doing something beloved. I guess the film interpretations have been a little disappointing from my point of view, so there was no way I was going to take the easy route out given this opportunity.
And yes, the Martians are callous, and if ever there was an embodiment of pure ego and self grandeur, I'd like the Martians to be it. They do not care about man, do not fear us in any way, and why should they? But of course, on a grand scale, there is always a bigger fish, or a microscopic one :)
Thanks for the great comment, I love that you get where I'm going with it. It helps to remind me too. Long months animating can disconnect me from the story and direction a bit. You kind of forget where you were headed.
      All the best! :)

    Where to begin?
The radio sequence was done amazingly, with attempts at coordination between each unit being snuffed out by the constant effort to defend against martian forces. I loved the bit at 1:23, and i'm not even sure if i can put into words why. While i'm still talking about this section, the constant martian droning from outside really adds to the atmosphere, just adding that slight bit more dread. The car sequence was also done brilliantly, showing off the agility of the handling machines. I was scared of them before this one, but after seeing it's top speeds it might be the scariest part of the entire series. I cannot even begin to describe how perfect the martian reveal sequence was. Another person probably would have done it with a cheap jumpscare, but the slow reveal of the martian as it climbs out of it's handling machine really set off some primal fear in me. It's model and animation couldn't have been done better in my opinion, really emphasising that this is something living, not a machine or a model. And then the feeding. There's just something about the way they evolved to be able to do... that which really adds more to that fear factor. I am running out of synonyms for fear. And then the final sequence. Our protagonist just wandering through the desolate streets, completely vulnerable to any attack. It took me a while to realise that the thing at the end was one of the red weed machines from harvest, but when it settled it was just terrifying to think that these are things the martians are using in mass quantities. Imagine being safe in a bunker or something, but then red weed slowly starts creeping it's way in. I honestly can't think of anything more to say. Definitely worth the wait, and disappointed in myself for not having seen this sooner.

That was such a lovely review of the episode, thank you so much! It means a huge amount to me, I can't tell you. It's great to know that each part of the episode did what I hoped. When you work on something for so long, you lose sight of whether it is working or not. So it's been a relief to hear that it turned out ok, and comments such as this make it all very worthwhile.
So all I can say is thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, I am most grateful. Fingers crossed the next episode won't be so long coming, and is already well underway. Hopefully see you at the next one!

All thats left now is the probe, thunder child sequence and the plague that wipes out the martians.
I didn't mention this in the stream cause it was so late but the base behind the red weed cages not to mention the sounds and lights of the cages was a nice tutch.
You did a great job selling the fear facter and gory feeding scene was hard to look at as intended.

One thing I'll say, is although you're kind of right regarding elements we haven't seen, and those will be coming up in time, I have much larger plans for this story and it will begin to deviate away from what has already been done many times. I was never keen on the short sighted insta-death of the Martians. They're very intelligent. So expect to see them take a much grander foothold on Earth.
The thing to remember is that the year is 1934, so it's not quite the same as 1898, and so the story will reflect that too. But we'll for sure see plenty that is familiar along side that which is not.
It'll be a fun ride! I'm sure you'll enjoy it, because it's only going to get more intense!

Part of the idea behind utilising the "Directorate of military operations and intelligence" is that they are gathering as much intel as possible, because they have no idea what they are up against. So it's like delving into the top secret archives, as well as public footage taken. Film camera's were actually quite common back then, and who wouldn't film it! :)

      @waroftheworlds1934  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Shabazzy :D Great to see you! And thank you of course, too kind! I'm still struggling with being too close to something for too long, and finding it hard to stand back and assess it. I would say that it's been a difficult birth! But I am most pleased to hear this from you, as I know you understand the difficulties in creating these things.
Regarding vehicle setup pro, I didn't this time. I reached a point where the hold up in trying to get it all working was frustrating my eagerness to press on, so I hand keyed the whole thing. Without doubt, in future videos I'll probably use it, but this time I just had to do it manually. I kind of knew that it'd be almost impossible to spot the nuance of a properly rigged vehicle anyway, given the nature of the scene, so I was much happier that I could invest my time elsewhere.
What really took up way too much time was creating those damn streets. They're more or less reasonably historically accurate and all modelled from scratch. The street they turn down after the handling machine flips the other truck no longer exists, and I recreated it from many old (and poor) photos. Typically, not much of it is seen and whizzes past the camera in a blur. But the modelling work will be useful in the future, so I hold on to that to keep my spirits up :)
It's been a funny one to produce, and nothing like I originally intended. Certainly very costly in time. But still, I'm just glad it's out now, and the reception has been very good which is a relief... making up for my own inability to properly enjoy the result. I'm very sure you know the feeling. In time I'll see it with fresh eyes though.
I'm rather hoping that I can finally make proper use of LW2023 moving forward, as the rendering glitch on clip maps really just broke my scenes and I ended up having to go back to 2019. Render times on so many frames has been a real hold back, and the quality isn't what I wanted it to be. I think that is what's bothering me the most to be honest.
If i can get my head around Octane, then I'm hoping that will speed up future videos a lot. Fingers crossed!
Anyway, great as always to see you, and I very much appreciate your comment.

Lightwave is pretty much a self contained studio, and I don't really need to go too far away from it. The only exception would be texturing, for which I do most of it in photoshop (though I'm looking to move away from Adobe, maybe over to Affinity). I cancelled my Adobe sub back in 2020 when things were very tight. I still have the final CS version on disk, and Adobe are so poor at updating their software, given the amount they charge, there is barely a difference.
But yes, I'd always recommend Lightwave. It went through a bit of a bumpy patch as it was sold to a company who didn't care for it. Thankfully, they sold it on to a group of people who actually use it and love it like I do, and they're making massive strides right now and getting it back on track. Amazingly, they seem to be adding all the tools I really need for future videos, so I'm over the moon :)
It costs a bit to get on board, where as Blender is free, but there is a certain organisation of the software that just makes it much easier to use. Blender is a little bit messy, like a swiss army knife. Also, I'm too old to learn so many new tricks haha.

He got a signal to return. Though, I'd say he saw the camera, and not necessarily the cameraman. If you look closely, the cameraman pulls a blanket over himself just before the Truck is tipped over. Blink and you might miss it. The Martian may have wondered about what was under it, and was going to check it out, but he was called back... and he knew better than to ignore his superiors! :)

What was that mechanism at the end? Was it grinding up the fleshy part of men to make the red weed? Or does it happen to be that a skull was nearby and it uses a different method on making the red cacti vine

    • @waroftheworlds1934
      @waroftheworlds1934  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Well, even though I made it, I leave a certain amount to the viewer to kind of interpret. I can only share what I imagine is happening. Something along the lines of... The cages that trapped the people are kind of seeds. The red weed is grown in them, and engulfs all the people inside, using them as a food source. When you see the cages with the lights at the start, that is like an intense growing state. The Cages would enhance the growing of the red weed, and they'd essentially strip the bodies of all flesh, leaving only bones.
When the cages have reached capacity, the flying machines are flying them to drop them in water (in key places). With the cage shield dropped, the weed spills out and starts to spread. The remains of the bodies, the bones are all caught up in the weed, and so they just get dragged along with it as it spreads, entangled in it.
The central column acts like a shaker. It's a bit like certain species of mushroom mycelium (the spores), they need violent shaking and knocks to make it spread properly. A kind of encouragement to growth.
So while it's still in it's early stages, it makes sure that it grows at full potential. In the long term it doesn't matter. It's more near the beginning.
There's also a reason that they chose Birmingham for this, but we'll find out about that in the future, near future. I might even put the above into a video. We'll see what happens.
But of course, this is all speculation from a human, and Martian tech is very alien, so it might be wrong. :) There is no right answer, but this is what makes sense to me.
      Thanks for watching!
